  1. This is like when the Jaguar execs started calling all the ad agencies that lost out to
  2. If you are going to lose 90+ games I'm not sure trying to win an extra 2 games with defensive efficiency really matters when it comes to maximizing return on your tradeable assets.
  3. Didn't realize this was on. Time to turn away from proper work hours television viewing and put the game on.
  4. Well, I can't deny that this year's .333 team is taking it *way* better than some of the awful teams in the past. And Bryan LaHair looks like a man who does *not* take [expletive] from boom boxes unless he is okay with it. This definitely does seem to be the most pleasant absolute shithole of a team I have seen assembled.
  5. I think the time when it's worth getting rid of Soriano simply to free up the spot, regardless of return, is at least a year away. He's absolutely not hindering anybody else's potential playing time today, and I don't really see that happening by next April either. By the time next year's trading deadline comes around, if you still aren't getting bites from people who will give you quality in return of cheap production then go ahead and think about a release, or giving him away for nothing. But there's no reason to do it this summer. It's still nice to have a couple guys in the lineup who can get the fans on their feet once in a while.
  6. But if their future performance is going to be disappointing then isn't it better to find out now, before you go out and commit? Unless you think the losing, in and of itself will cause them to underperform, then finding out these guys actually aren't worth locking up to contracts while going through this process is better than thinking you have some core players who are actually just outperforming reality.
  7. Again, the new rules probably change this line of thinking to a significant degree. A very small degree. One pick can make your team in the NFL and NBA in ways that just don't carry over to MLB. And those picks go right from college to starting for your big club. In baseball, you are still talking about guys who are almost always a couple years away from contributing, not to mention wild cards in terms of if they will produce. Tanking for a pick doesn't work the same, regardless of the new rules.
  8. surprised we haven't seen a "I saw a lot of activity in the soler thread and click on it to see all this soriano talk, thanks a lot guys" post.
  9. I assume you are talking about soriano. you pay the cash to increase the talent that comes back in return. olney makes it sound like we wouldn't get much even if we paid. that's incredibly dumb. Doesn't seem that dumb to me. I can't imagine there's a big market for the guy, so no need to "give up much".

  11. How sure are we of Soler's age? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4t1GGD-l0U
  12. Is it still technically before Monday anywhere on the planet now?
  13. those disappointing performances could then keep those players' prices down
  14. Uggh, Dempster's next start is going to be against Boston coming off an overextend outing yesterday. I really hope he doesn't blow out his value with a stinker ala Santana's post no-hit game.
  15. It's been done, but didn't last. [/obligatory]
  16. Wow, what a great answer to a stupid question. He probably didn't have to go as in depth into the A/AAA differences in pitchers and could have said something about Vitters and Baez. Maybe bring up what Vitters was like at the same age/level, etc. Although yes, dumb question.
  17. http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17peqt084y855jpg/xlarge.jpg
  18. brett jackson k rate this year- 31% adan dunn career- 29% soriano has been under 23% his entire career Not those numbers... the other ones...its our choice...we're weaker than a wounded woman ... doesn't have to be like that
  19. I'm not really interested in guys who can be worked on at the major league level. That's what Volstad was. The readiness to pitch today at the major league level (not to mention to do so with disastrous results) isn't really a big motivator for me. I'd much rather look into getting something without so much stink on it. And I'd much much rather ignore anything Jim Bowden suggests, just as a sort of rule in life.
  20. there's a hell of a lot more than just 75 PA to judge. then why did you use those 75 as your argument? The most easily accessible example of what is so glaringly obviously not a stupid decision.
  21. there's a hell of a lot more than just 75 PA to judge.
  22. I can imagine there is a case to be made in support of such a move, I think it's ridiculous to suggest that not wanting to make that move is dumb.
  23. There is literally nothing remotely stupid about it. It is a completely justifiable decision to make.
