I'm not sure why you think they would do that, or why that is true. If there is a mechanism in place for him to opt out of free agency, then he will have then opted out of his contract. -

Well, they did get rid of their best reliever and the guy who could have been their 2nd best reliever before the season started. I had no faith in Wood going into this season. And after that the bullpen was predictably awful. Byrd is a strange case. It was reasonable to expect him to be decent, but he's old, and his career arc was already odd. Going from awful hitter through what should have been his prime to fairly dependable piece through his post-prime years, in retrospect a fall off the cliff shouldn't have been that surprising. Soto's just a kick in the nuts.

Doesn't that mean you don't really care if any of the players end up being good players or not? Especially at a team level, the team playing very poorly over that time would certainly mean a lower expectation from key players in future seasons, which makes it all the move harder to improve to a competitive level. Not at all. The players I care about actually are playing fairly well and the team stinks. And that is something I can see continuing through the rest of the year.

My only concern with maintaining this losing pace at this point is Castro becoming some sort of depressed drunkard surrounded by all this incompetence. Well, other than it really sucks balls to follow a baseball team that sucks balls. I don't really buy the "all our good players will have to be bad in order to get there" mindset, since A, that's not true, and B, they are going to be what they are going to be in the future regardless of how they play the next 3.5 months. I'm not afraid of management giving up on some prospect thanks to an itchy trigger finger.

This. Whether they lose 100 games or 99, they still lose and come in last place more than likely. With a bigger talent pool in the draft next year, I'm quite alright with a 100 loss team. Actually, I kind of hope it happens just to make sure we get the best possible player available. They aren't going to the playoffs one way or the other, so at this point the more games they lose the better it will be for the future development of the team, as far as I'm concerned. So it's better for the future development of the team for guys like Castro, Barney, Clevenger, LaHair, Rizzo, Samardzija, Garza, Wood, etc to play so poorly that the team loses as many games as possible? What the hell does LaHair have to do with it? None of those guys are playing poorly and the team is already well on its way to 100.

You don't think GMs looked at an offer and weighed it against draft pick compensation they would be entitled to if they lost the player in FA? No, they didn't weight it against it, because by and large, any decent prospect package is going to be worth the chance that you might get sombody with the 42nd pick who can one day be as highly rated as the prospects you got. It obviously influenced decisions, but compensation was no guarantee (there was always the threat that the player would accept your arbitration offer) and the value of those things just aren't close to equal.

But it's also not the determining factor in trade decisions that without them, will completely shut down the market. It was mostly a way for cost conscious teams to justify giving up their prospects for veterans who helped them in the short-term. Straight up cash probably played a bigger role in the trading atmosphere the last 5 years.

Because prospects aren't compensation picks. Prospects are known quantities right now, even if all that is known is how they are handling professional baseball. Compensation picks after the 1st and 2nd round of next year's draft are the furthest thing from a known quantity you can get for a GM who needs to win soon. You don't know who will be available, let alone if you can sign them or how they will handle extended spring training. Prospects are generally considered a year away when teams go trading their vets for them. A potential comp pick (which you don't even really know if you can get at the time of the trade) is a year away from being drafted and likely a year and a half away from getting into your system, then another 4-5 years away from contributing to your team. It's apples and oranges and a completely absurd comparison.

Wesley Snipes? Maybe I'll just call him Blade. He looks nothing like Wesley Snipes and is about 9" taller. Unless you think.....nevermind. He was confused by that Face Off remake starring Wesley Snipes and the guy who played Bubba in Forrest Gump.

I'd assume he becomes a free agent. Assuming this is year 1, Soler would have to be in the big leagues for good after 1.25-1.5 minor league seasons. I doubt it's a problem. Yeah, if he's able to opt out of the deal for arbitration reasons, then he's opted out and presumably would be just like any other free agent to be.

Nice article. And the comments show just how impossible it is to overcome that perception. people don't like cutler, he's got that frat boy persona that people bristle at. of all the quarterbacks in the league, i can say that for this team, for sure, i'd take rodgers above him. everyone else is speculative. The thing about Cutler's frat boy persona is I don't think he has a frat boy persona at all. If anything, he comes off like a guy who couldn't care less about frats trying to get him to pledge.

So, when none of that worked out, should the first response have been to question the organizational development strategy (of which there apparently was none)? First thought should have been, "it's stupid for anybody to pencil in an entirely internally created roster a few years down the line", and then, "especially since Hendry's Cubs are terrible at developing prospects."

Very true. And that's pretty much what Goldstein said a little bit ago. He said he could see the Cubs getting a top 10 organizational guy for Dempster, which would obviously be great. Top 10 organizational guy? As in top 10 in the organization. Can't tell whether that would mean our organization or the trading one, but I'd guess the latter. Couldn't tell if he meant top 10 prospect or some subset of prospects within each organization, that everybody refers to as organizational players.

It probably won't make him a bargain. But it's not about bargains, it's about getting productivity.

So with Soler, Jackson, Almora and Szczur the Cubs now have what they never had under Hendry, and what forced them into the Soriano situation, depth in the OF. They were constantly bringing in other guys for the OF and completely devoid of help options to Soriano deal, which pretty much meant they had no choice but to acquire him. Hopefully they can get to a point where they are continuously bringing up their own OF depth.

One of these things, is not like the others... Yeah, I know. But with the lack of bats likely to show up on the market, I do think we could net a surprising return for him. You shouldn't be surprised to get a live human for him. But the return won't move the team from top ten to top 5.

Every team, except the Cubs, probably considered it, but it didn't shape the trade market.
