  1. This is unbelievable. If we weren't talking about the Cubs, of course.
  2. And we now resume "Operation: Get the ball out of the infield."
  3. This discussion reminds me that the D'backs have had Maddux's number as well...for his career, he's 1-10 with a 5.28 ERA vs. the snakes.
  4. Ditto. Yanks will be buyers. Again. I think Dmitri Young is headed to NY. With all that money, all that pressure to win, and being a mere 6/7 games out of the playoffs--in mid-July, no less--there is no chance they are sellers. The Cubs' best opportunities for trades will be with the usual suspects. Attention Jim Hendry: just hang up the phone when Baltimore calls. Please. Now after Jim Bowden asks Cashman for Hughes, Chamberlain, Wang and Cano or some ridiculous package thereabouts.
  5. You'd have to think any trade for an OF would include Murton from our end. Guy isn't playing now; he sure as heck won't see the field if we bring in a Dunn or Griffey, etc. Plus he's young, cheap, and has shown to be productive. The key would be passing him off to an organization that would actually value a LF who could put up an .850 OPS without tons of power...seems like Cincinnati wouldn't be on that list from everything I've read.
  6. The Bears are winning with Kyle Orton at quarterback, thus, they should not look to upgrade that position.
  7. I love switching his name around and calling him the pagan angel. It sounds just funny enough to make me forget how bad he is.
  8. Greinke's still just 23. He looked like a future 1 or 2 starter as a rookie when he posted a 3.97 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 100:26 K/BB ratio. I wouldn't mind taking a shot at him, but what would we do with him? Keep him as a reliever, then transition back to SP next spring? Longterm I'd think his potential is definitely highest as a starter. I recall a column by Rob Neyer back in '05 where Neyer had him clocked as throwing at least one pitch in virtually every velocity 'slot' between like 70 MPH and 94 MPH (or thereabouts). Varied speeds as good as anyone.
  9. I don't even think pitchers should be given wins and losses. Same with goalies in hockey.
  10. I'd feel better about this trade if we would've called Soto up about 1-2 weeks earlier and at least given him a chance to show what we can do at the ML level first. If he was ever going to get a shot, you'd think it would be on a team with Hill and Bowen as the catching tandem. Frustrating that we seem to prefer going for the first available washed-up veteran to actually finding out whether our younger players are up to the task. Slightly reminiscent of the Murton saga to me. If Matt's not going to play with Floyd (hurt) and Derosa as our available RFs, he never will. That said, a pretty low risk move I guess. At worst he's just as bad as our current catchers, and at best he gives us an OBP in the .300s which, sadly, would mark a significant improvement. And we're not paying much at all. I guess that's something.
  11. Me too, but that's looking more and more unlikely. The Braves have won 4 in a row and are just 1.5 GB in the NL East (and 1 GB of the Wildcard). The team they're chasing in the NLE is old and scuffling...no reason to bag it, in my humble opinion. Unless Scheurholtz pulls a Reinsdorf and unloads his entire roster while still easily within striking distance.
  12. Lincecum is very reminiscent of Oswalt. I'm hoping we can give him similar treatment.
  13. Wandy cannot locate that fastball for crap. It's either been down main street or way out of the zone all afternoon, hence all the BBs and HRs (and not much in between).
  14. Thanks a lot, WGN. I'm sure that HR would've looked real good.
