Floyd's average is nice and a pleasant surprise, for sure; it's his SLG% that worries me. If you're not going to get XBHs from RF, you're going to need them from a non-traditional power position to make up for it, and we're not generating any power whatsoever from those positions to being with (SS, C, 2B). As a team, we're 8th in the NL in slugging, 9th in OPS and 11th in HRs hit. While our BA is solid (.268, 5th in the NL) I worry about any team chasing the playoffs with only two players likely bets to top 20 HRs (Sori and Ramy) and only two others likely to hit double digits (Lee and DeRo). I just think our SP is going to have to continue to be awfully good to even stay in this race unless Jim finds a way to add power to this lineup. As others have noted, we've been surprisingly good with runners on base and in "clutch" situations, but we're still lacking in total bases, and it's not helping that our 2nd best run producer never hits with anyone on base.

Agreed, but you and I both know that's what ol' Jim's gonna do, right? We're going to give up 1-2 prospects plus a major leaguer for Eric Gagne to get us 'bullpen help' while our offense settles into a 3-4 RPG clip the rest of the way. It gets me angry just thinking about it because it's so obvious that's what Hendry will do. After seeing the Cubs win in person 3 times at RFK this week (thankfully I skipped the July 4th massacre) I'll agree with the board consensus that this lineup isn't good enough to sustain our post-June 3rd play the rest of the summer, or even anything close to it. It's not just C and SS. At center we still have a platoon of Pagan/Pie/Jones (on occasion), and RF speaks for itself. Soriano, Lee and Ramirez are nice pieces, but filling in around them with a bunch of crap won't win this decision no matter HOW well we're playing right now. I really really hope Hendry does everything in his power - whatever that may be- to add some offense to our everyday lineup and not go chasing after overpriced, veteran 'help' in the bullpen. This team's bully is fine.

Think Dunn is really the only guy who we could legitimately acquire at the deadline who would address our 3 most glaring weaknesses (offense at RF, C, and SS). The Reds will hang on to Griffey as long as he's "chasing" 600 HRs and there just aren't any catchers or shortstops out there who can give up a .750+ OPS and are truly "available." -
Very overcast with rain on/off all day here. Think the forecast looks pretty bad all night...got 4 tix tonight, but am getting more pessimistic by the hour.

So true. As soon as I got to RFK Stadium and saw our lineup flash on the scoreboard, I knew any sort of W would be gladly taken. Lou must've figured that with now-minor league washout Tim Redding on the mound (vs. Z), scratching out 3-4 runs would be doable even without Ram. Another huge pro-Cubs crowd...tonight I'd say it was closer to 45-50%, definitely an even better Northside showing than yesterday. Only negative from tonight IMO is Derrek- the guy's swing just doesn't feel right. Driving every single ball right into the ground with little burst whatsoever. When you watch him swing, you don't even get the sense that 6 HRs in July is abnormal. That's how 'off' he seems to me. PS Marmol is absolutely filthy. The Nats fans (who of course had no clue who Carlos was) couldn't believe how badly he embarassed Belliard in the 7th with men on, the key AB of the game.

Just back from RFK. Great game all around; you could tell from the second swing of the game - Soriano's flyout to deep center field - that Simontachi simply wasn't going to fool anyone, and that's exactly what happened. FWIW, Soriano got a mixed reaction from all 300 Nats fans in attendence. I'd say the crowd was at least 35-40% northside faithful. Very very nice. Going back tomorrow...ps that ballpark sucks in every way imagineable.

Agree- he's obviously shown he can hit in that park. I'm curious to hear what the crowd reaction will be when his name is announced. I doubt he'll receive any serious boos; for one he was only there for a year, two everyone knows Bowden wasn't even in the ballpark as far as what he command with his next contract, and three the Nats don't have real baseball fans who were actually paying attention during all this (or would who even give a crap).

The centerfield camera view will jar you a bit, unfortunately. It's positioned lower and more in dead-center than most parks, so you won't see the break of the balls as much and the pitcher almost obstructs the hitter. Not that it matters, since it's physically impossible to hit a HR in that massive park. Still, anything's better than actually being in the park, which must easily be the worst gameday experience in all of sports. I live in the DC area and today will be my first Cubs' game this season- always try to catch 'em when they're here in DC. I'll be there tonight, tomorrow and Thursday (no 4th for me, the city is a zoo on the 4th) and better see at least 2 wins (if not 3). Do it, jerks.

The upcoming schedule certainly does look 'doable', though I'd feel a lot better about it we had A-Ram in the lineup.

Would absolutely love Cuban to own the Cubs...as long as he doesn't have a baseball version of "hey, let's let Steve Nash walk, we'll sign Erick Dampier to a huge deal" type-gaffe in him.

OK, thanks. I should've known about Smith anyway; I went to Wake Forest and followed their run to the ACC championship game in baseball this year (beating Clemson in said tournament). PS Considering how many Clemson draftees there seem to be, I wouldn't be surprised if their equipment manager were drafted at some point.

I would just stay away from HS pitching prospects at the top of the draft altogether, but that's just me. Seems like the consensus from what I've read on BA, ESPN.com, minorleagubaseball.com (John Sickels) points to Jarrod Parker at #3. So I'm attempting to get excited about that...but with stud positional prospects likely to be available like Wieters, Vitters and even Moutsa-whatever, can't help but feel a little disappointed already.
