  1. Z probably shouldn't be top 3 or even top 5 (at least not yet), but he's got the one stat voters actually look at- wins. He'll be in the conversation, especially if his ERA continues to head south and his strikeout totals remain impressive (the only other 2 stats the voters look at).
  2. That would make Pie the Jack Haley to the Cubs' Dennis Rodman.
  3. Forget the lineup, we need Octavio Dotel or Eric Gagne!!!! :?
  4. How good are Matt Harrison and this Elvis character as far as prospect level?
  5. Slightly off-topic (but not worthy of its own thread in my opinion), but would anyone be intersted in Juan Encarnacion? Obviously he had a helluva game yesterday vs. the Cobs, plays RF, has a canon for an arm (still), and is just 31. He has an .800 OPS this year, and is just heating up after missing much of the 1st half of the year with an injury (batting .405 since the AS break and slugging .554 in the month of July). He won't help us in the ol' OBP department, but he hits lefties pretty well (.280, though his SLG% vs. lefties is woeful) and would certainly provide a power and defense upgrade over Floyd/DeRosa in right. Not sure his contract status, but you'd have to figure the Cards - being totally out of it - would listen to offers considering they are reportedly doing so for Isringhausen.
  6. He's no Eckstein, I'll give you that. I could throw harder than that guy.
  7. Jacque and Cliff really look like they're having fun out there. Good to see.
  8. Really? You guys don't like hard-hitting, integral features like Who's Now, the Budweiser Hot Seat, and following every waking move of Barry Bonds, Michael Vick, and Terrell Owens for 30 minutes a night?
  9. His career SLG% is .085 points lower on the road than at home (.492 vs. .577) and he's just a career .265 hitter away from TBAA.
  10. Thanks for the info. FWIW, I thought it was Bedard/Tejada for Prior/Pie. Hrumph.
  11. I think that any trade for a RF would - and should - include Murton. I just don't see the kid ever getting a fair shake with the Cubs, and if we're going to upgrade RF to make a run in the next 1-2 years we should try and get something for Matt while we can. Last season's performance will still resonate with many organizations, and if we wait too much longer he'll be a 26-year old AAA player who won't be worth as much.
  12. Garland has thrown lots of innings the past few years. He is durable, I'll give him that. I think that even now, he's still living a bit off the shine of being minor league pitcher of the year back in the mid 90s or thereabouts. Just never been that effective a major league pitcher.
  13. Garland's ERA+ the last 6 seasons- 100 99 100 127 103 110 He's had one good year - 2005, year the Sox won the WS which was also the only year he had a WHIP below 1.3. He's just not that good.
  14. He's slugging .500 vs. LH pitching this year, and has a 1.123 OPS since the All-star break. Depending on the price, he could be a huge upgrade in RF.
  15. Which starter would you replace? Again, we have 5 starters with ERAs under 4.00, and 4 of which 30 years of age or younger. We think Marquis is the most likely to regress over time, but he has the 2nd largest contract of the 5 (currently) and certainly has pitched well enough to retain his spot in the rotation. Marshall is currently going through his "He can't really be this good, can he?" evaluation phase with the fans and organization, but has done nothing to lose his spot either. The other 3 shouldn't lose their starting spots regardless. Also, Marmol is cheap. The Cubs have overspent at too many positions, one of them being middle relief. Trading Marmol for Garland just makes our bullpen less valuable (by having to replace Marmol with a likely veteran earning more money) and our starting rotation more expensive. And of course, our rotation is already the greatest strength of this team. Why weaken one to improve the other. This team needs to shore up its lineup, not increase costs in an area of relative strength while dealing away one of our more intriguing assets.
  16. Absolutely true about RF. And DeRosa doesn't inspire much confidence out in RF, either. We're talking about a guy who two tweeks ago misplayed a ball in RFK so badly that Dmitri Young ended up with a stand-up triple. DMITRI YOUNG. That takes serious effort, folks. And yea, good luck dealing with Bowden. He'll bring up Hill, Gallagher and probably Patterson just to get talks started. Guy has no clue to the value of his own players relative to the major league market.
  17. Let's just get Royce Clayton and be done with it.
  18. That .186 Monroe hit last September + October really could do wonders for this club, I'm sure.
  19. I believe Church is just one of those guys who "strongly prefers" to start...he's well within his right to be PO'd considering the OF triumvirate of Austin Kearns, Nook Logan, Robert Fick that often patrols the outfield at RFK.
  20. Teams are gonna be climbing all over themselves trying to get their hands on Contreras, lemme tell ya.
