  1. Yep. Iowa probably has their best class since 2005 even though they're ranked 40 by Rivals. Four 4-star guys, four 2-star guys (one is a kicker) and 13 3-star guys. 7 of those 13 have a 5.7 Rivals ranking which is the highest possible 3-star. More importantly than stars they beat out a lot of good schools. On the topic though, I've never gotten the whole appeal of signing day. At least not since the development of sites like Rivals and Scout. There are a few surprises but over 90% stay with their decision. It's just guys signing a letter and faxing it in. The thing I like best about this Iowa recruiting class is that many of these guys were at the top of the coaches board. I trust Kirk's eye for talent more than the guys at Rival and Scout, though I find the star system fun from a fan's perspective.
  2. Apparently Iowa City was as fun then as it is now, "beer and co-eds." Go Hawks!
  3. I love that he has the Cubs #7 and the White Sox last. I have a cousin who is a White Sox fan generally a knowledgeable baseball fan, who I have had several arguments about whether the Cubs or White Sox have a better farm system. He refuses to believe that the Cubs system has improved, and also thinks Jordan Danks is going to be the next big thing. This ought to help me in any future disputes I will have with him!
  4. Well, I wouldn't mind playing some place where people gave me free beer while playing for the opposing team, so you never know...
  5. Words cannot describe how thankful I am that the discussion here at NSBB is intelligent and informed. After reading comments on several other sites today regarding Cubs prospect lists, having people who actually know what they are talking about is greatly appreciated. Just felt the need to share that.
  6. Phil Rogers = Idiot. While I would gladly take Granderson as my CF, if we're going to give up Castro and Marmol, we better get more than just him.
  7. Here is a nice article from BA's Prospect Blog regarding 3 of the Solar Sox left-side infielders, including Castro. It gives glowing analysis of his range, arm, and speed. Enjoy! http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=6908#more-6908
  8. I'm not surprised at all given our propensity to get blown out in Columbus, combined with Stanzi all but certainly being out.
  9. Starlin showing some power today with a triple in the sixth which according to gameday was hit to the fence in the left-center gap. That and Vitters is now 3/3, all singles.
  10. I really don't know what else you could ask for from a 19 year old SS. well identifying his lack of patience/power is fine, but it really is nitpicking. how many 19 year old middle infielders from latin america show good power and patience? he's shown a good glove in the AFL and leads the league in batting average as the second-youngest player in the league. that's fine. Well, Castro just homered! Thanks KG.
  11. Yeah, the RB situation is a little dicey. Let's just hope Wegher can carry an increased load, Paki can at least be serviceable, and that Rogers is able to contribute. I do like having a 225 lb back in Rogers available for short yardage situations, though. In the last year, we lost a Doak Walker winner to early entry into the draft, the incumbent who averaged 7 ypc last year to a knee injury, and now our leading rusher this year. Talk about taking a hit on the depth chart at RB. Eh, but we're still 8-0, so it's all good.
  12. Just so we're straight is "dem" making fun of a) black people b) southern people c) hillbilly's d) people who just don't talk very well? To me it was just like using "eh" or "up dere" if I were making fun of Canadians or Minnesotans. I see where you're coming from, you're just overthinking things. It was a drunken post at like 2:30 in the morning after a big win and a stupid back and forth with southern white guys. It would be extremely random and out of context to just start making fun of black dialect for no reason. There are walk-on white WR's but they don't play. #22 and #86 are the only white WR's that play. And our 2nd and 3rd TE's are white. Funny thing is, both of those white receivers were 4 star recruits coming out of high school.
  13. I've liked everything I've heard about Bulaga, but hadn't heard much about his thyroid condition. If he can close out the year well and have a good combine (if he leaves early), it wouldn't surprise me if they overlooked a poor start to the year. Coming into the season it was pretty much assumed that Bulaga would leave after this year. However, the thyroid condition, and how he has played recently has put that into question. He has been our at best our third best lineman performance wise this season (behind Calloway and Richardson, and possibly Reiff). Much of that can be attributed to health problems and missed practice time/lack of cohesiveness on the line. Also, he has faced two good DE's in Graham and Schofield, but a top ten pick should be able to make a better showing against those two than Bulaga did. I still think there is a good chance he leaves early, especially with a strong finish, but there seems to be a possibility that he will return next year, now.
  14. Vitters 3/4 now. Also, I wish Casey Kelly would realize his future is as a P and not at SS, so he would stop taking ABs from Starlin.
  15. No HJ Lee?
  16. Castro with another single, now 4/4. Extra bases would be nice, but I'll take a singles hitter as long as he keeps his batting average above .500.
  17. Castro now 3/3 with 2R and 1 RBI. Another ground ball single, this one of the 3rd pitch of the AB.
  18. Castro now 2/2, once again singling on the first pitch. However, he saw 3 pitches in the 2nd inning prior to the runner on 1st getting thrown out attempting to steal 2nd, which ended the inning.
  19. Castro playing SS today. He is 1/1 with a run scored in the first. His hit was a ground ball single on the first pitch he saw.
  20. For selfish reasons I want him to be called up at some point next year, so I can order a jersey shirt. However, unless he absolutely tears ish up next year, I'd rather let him continue to develop, become more patient, and eliminate the errors. Barring injury though, I doubt we he gets up any sooner than September. I see his ETA as 2011.
  21. Interception Iowa!!! This is Iowa Football!
  22. I think Clay tweaking his knee helped with that a lot. I'm not disagreeing with you, but seriously, could you be any more negative?
  23. You heard it here first. They'll make the official announcement tomorrow, but it appears unlikely they'll play. Don't believe everything you read on free message boards. Or rumors that get started there and passed down. They've had guys dealing with the flu during the week all year. From everything I've heard this week is no different in severity or the number affected. Besides most of what's going around right now is a short-term deal. They wouldn't be ruled out that far ahead of time and I'm not sure why they would send out an announcement to let everyone know they'll be without multiple starters. Seconded. It seems as though there are a couple pot-stirrers over on the free boards. I refuse to get caught up in it until their is a reliable source providing the info. I
  24. Castro now 3-4 with 3 RBI. The third single was a line drive to the CF.
