    Ah, yes, OPS+ -- a favorite stat among HOF voters. Batting average is, and a career .307 hitter looks very good to those voters. Plus, wow, look at that career OBP. .427 is fantastic for a season, think of how incredible he had to be for so long to get it that high.

But it sounds like you're in favor of "manufacturing runs" instead of "Weaver-ball." Players with high OBP are usually also players who hit a lot of homeruns. It sounds to me like you want to have high OBP without relying on homeruns. That would be hard to do. Players in the top 40 in OBP last year with fewer than 15 homers: Luis Castillo, Placido Polanco, Sean Casey, Joe Mauer, and Bill Mueller. I really don't know how we could field a high-OBP team that "manufactured runs" without relying on power. Power = Pitches out of the Strike Zone = More Walks = Less Outs/More Baserunners = More runs Basically a proven formula. [sarcasm] But I thought walks were bad? [/sarcasm] I almost can't believe that some of you say Dusty thinks walks are bad, I'd like to see some evidence to this. In no way is adding a baserunner and avoiding an out a bad thing, ever. (ok we might get into some stuff with a pitcher comingup, but c'mon now)

    See the problem with the Oakland A's is that they wait on the 3 run homer, and they can't manufacture runs. They are still waiting. What? He says this stupid tirade every single broadcast. (Insert team for Oakland A's)

    how does zambrano count as a kid? I brought up the 5 kids cause I'm ticked that Cubs system continues to suck. He's 24. Def a kid. Your wrote that "the kids have taken the cubs down the toilet in may." Why didn't you start a post saying "maddux, pierre, and walker have taken the cubs down the toilet in may"? Surely, we should be relying on these three much more than Cedeno, Murton, and Marshall to pick up the slack of DLee, Wood, and Prior being gone. It shows your bias against the younger players to single out the play of Murton and Cedeno and blame the team's losing on them. gmab. Z's been in the league for several seasons. The Cubs are 0-7 in the games Guzman & Hill pitches and Murton & Cedeno have been brutal. They've killed the team.. Bottom line. Sorry. o rly? Whats the record of the Cubs when Murton is in the 2 hole? I don't think the constant shuffling of the lineup helps the "kids"

    Agreed. Funny how he can have ~150 less homers than Sammy and is practically guaranteed...and there are doubts about Sammy's ability to get in. Especially when Thomas has just as much evidence of steroid use pointing at him as Sammy does (which is to say, none). *shrug* What do you want me to say?

    Not really. Since this season is over already we might as well throw him into quick freeze and warm him up for his 15 starts next year.

    They lost it when they were winning 4-0 through 7 or something and managed to relinquish the lead. To Rob Mackowiak no less.

    The only thing that could be worse is if the Giants joined the Cards and White Sox as one of the top teams in the league. The LAST thing I want is for Bonds to get a World Series title. Theres still hope for the A's to win the whole thing or something. That would pretty much be the only team I could stand to win it. I don't want to see the Yanks, Red or White Sox, Cardinals, or Giants (not that they have a shot) win it.

    ...against his former team. The last one was a ROCKET, a no doubter, and it shut up Hawk for a while. ("Four nothing, A's", and then he dissociated himself for a while) Amazing. This game was just surreal. The Sox come back from 4-0, and win with guess what, a squeeze bunt from Pablo Ozuna (WITH 2 OUTS AHHHHHH). What?! Its like some sick joke or something. Poor Zito and poor Thomas. (I kinda got a soft spot in my heart for the A's, especially after reading Moneyball)

    Not really. Just looking for what I consider a much better team to emerge from a couple of very difficult weeks. I'm not seeing a team ready to phone it in. When I saw neifi perez lay down that bunt, I knew this season was over.

    Great post, hadn't thought of it this way. You hadn't thought about it that way because it really doesn't make much sense. If beating established pitchers just came to swinging at everything, they wouldn't be established pitchers. Its not the fact that they throw strikes, its the fact that they throw strikes that are hard to hit. Every pitcher can throw strikes, but hitting them isn't the same as batting practice. Yes, the Cubs may not draw a lot of walks, but I don't buy this "they are more successful against good pitchers because they swing nilly-willy" theory. Sample-size anyone?

    As opposed to what? Wishing he wouldn't come back healthy and pitch well? As opposed to having him just leave without the Cubs being able to at least try to get something for him. If he pitches poorly he hurts us because the Cubs will lose and nobody will want to trade for him. Well, we got a first round pick if he leaves, and we also don't have to possibly owe someone a whole lotta money.
