But even the people that think he's older realize that at most he's 28. That means he likely has at least 7 more years to torment the NL Central barring injury. Our only hope is that the Yankees somehow offer him $35 million per season. Probably more than 10. He's the type of anti-Cub player that'll just keep ticking and ticking forever. (Like Brett Favre as the anti-Bear) I dunno if this has been mentioned...but what about Dontrelle Willis + Cabrera for Zambrano-somebody and some minor leaguers (Pie, buncha others) Whoa, ever thought about THAT. And they are a whole lot more fun to watch than the Cubs right now. Those kids are playing for their major league careers and they are all getting quality major league experience that will be quite beneficial when Florida adds role players to turn the team into another potential World Series champion in a small handful of years. You wouldn't want Hanley Ramirez, Jeremy Hermida, Josh Willingham, Dan Uggla on your team? While the Cubs continue spinning their wheels in mediocrity, Florida will rebuild and crush the Cubs in a few years. Heck, they're crushing the Cubs now. They aren't going to make much noise w/ that itty bitty budget of their's. Florida might not even win 50 games this year. The Cubs are probably in for a poor season, but Lee's return should push them over 70 wins, at least. If Prior's back, 75+. Woohoo. :) What? Thats not even good. Thats like saying you'll settle for 7-9 every season with your football team. Its better than being 4-12 right? Well except that 4-12 team might turn it around the next year and win the Super Bowl. I'd rather we bomb and get a better draft pick, shake up the organization...drop some players...etc. Being mediocre is exactly whats wrong with this team. And fans, like you, who are happy with a 70 win season is exactly what we don't need. What you failed to mention is dropping down to a $15 million budget. Baker might win 1 game out of 162 w/ that. I'm confused...shouldn't they be commended for doing so much with so little? no. they should leave florida. ok leaving now. :) Yet they arguably have a brighter future with a 15 million dollar payroll than the Cubs and their 95 million. I find it interesting how we can come to completely different conclusions from this discussion. Amazing how the human mind works. I trust you'll read this later: The Marlins are going to be horrid this year. I'd be very surprised if they get 60 wins. However, they likely will have the rookie of the year on their team, and have positively robbed some teams (The Cubs, The Red Sox....etc.) of some very promising prospects. The point is. They are spending 15 million dollars...their fans are pissed...they are going to be terrible this year - yet their future is much brighter than the Cubs'. They have some sort of direction. They've done this before, and if they stay in Florida...they likely will do it again. They will stock up, reload, and take another shot at the postseason. The Cubs will keep spinning in the toilet of 65-85 wins...either because our manager can't force himself to pull the trigger, or because they just truly don't care about winning a championship.

It certainly is more impressive than the wheel of mediocrity that is turned every year here in Chicago. Every year we trade away promising talent from our farm system, stock up on mediocre free agents over the hill and past a prime that wasn't...and well, you know the rest. The Cubs were a Bartman interference away from taking it in 2003. Huzienga spent like a fiend in 1997. Iirc they spent like crazy on free agents. The Trib would never allow that. They took their shot. They saw they were on the brink, and pushed themselves over the edge. Bartman or not, they won the World Series after beating us and the Yankees. You can't steal the trophy away from them. The Cubs will never win because this organization is too afraid of pulling the trigger. Because K's isnt a big deal when you are getting on base at such a high rate. (see, adam dunn. 54 K's .380+ OBP) Or hell, in this case, see corey patterson: 2 more k's, seventy more points of OBP. K's are overblown anyway. Jason Giambi tends to K more than the average MLB'er, because he'd rather take a pitch he can't do much with than pop up or something. He also gets on base at an incredibly high clip, so I think we can absolve him for it. And while this is a small point, sometimes K'ing is better than hitting into a double play. :lol: Solid contact > weak swing. (Many of Dunn's and Giambi's strike outs are called, thus they take marginal pitches. They rarely K swinging) Now when a player strikes out a lot, barely makes contact (like Corey was *ahem* known to do) and can't seem to differentiate between a ball at his eyes and a ball at his knees...then we got a problem.

I agree - if he doesn't get in there ought to be an investigation. He was so dominant its almost unfathomable. Imagine if the Sox had actually put some players around hm during his prime (other than Ventura) and had starters other than Blck Jack. And please stop measuring HOF-worthiness based only on HRs. The fact that Sosa has more - steroid aided or not - does not make him a better hitter than Thomas. Thomas was and is a much better hitter. That...was sorta the point I was making. Sosa has about 150 more homers...but was/is the inferior player to Thomas (even counting the fact that he played much of his career at DH). The fact that Thomas could control the strike zone, hit for power and average, draw walks, etc. makes him a better overall hitter.
