  1. For the longest time people thought that a baseball player's prime was like, ages 27-29, and then people actually studied it and found that actually no, most players primes were actually far, far earlier. Like, early 20s to mid-20s (if that). There are freaks of nature out there but they are the exception, not the rule. It's far worse with football players. Most of the value of a given player will be on their first contract, when drafted.
  2. We get into the old chicken and egg debate about QBs and coaching. I don't know if there's any way to prove it one way or the other. I still feel prejudiced towards my "you need a QB" thesis, but I don't know if I can persuade anyone with the data thats available, which can be interpreted in multilple ways. People wrote off Minnesota, then they got Sam Darnold who had a great year and the team was great. Was that coaching that turned him around? Maybe. Maybe he was a late bloomer and finally played up to his talent level after years of experience (and coaching from previous teams). Minnesota's roster wasn't all that different in 2023 and they were mediocre, and I can point to the extraordinarily bad play at QB of Nick Mullens, Josh Dobbs and Jaren Hall (who?) as a decisive factor to that down the stretch. (Of course, Cousins was 4-4 and played really well, statistically) The Eagles have a fantastic QB in Jalen Hurts. I dunno. Is that Sirianni genius or is that just cuz Hurts is really good. 🤷‍♂️ People wanted to fire Sirianni last year. Hurts was still really good. Everyone has their priors.
  3. Sure, *some* DEs can perform well into their 30s, some don't. Aging is not a linear thing and many older players hit a wall or get a nasty injury and are out of the league. The best D-Tackle of our generation retired at age 30. It *can* work out, but its not something I necessarily want to pour a lot of money or resources. Montez Sweat will be 29 next year. There are real questions to ask: Is it more valuable to invest in a 22 year old D-End coming out of school who may not have as much higher end potential but could be on the team throughout their prime and on a cheaper deal? I honestly don't know the answer to that. EDIT: Woops, had that wrong, Donald retired his age 32 season
  4. The "window" is, do you have a QB and offense in place. That isn't the same as a salary cap window or anything, but it *is* a window.
  5. In one sense I agree, in another sense, I don't agree. Think about it this way: Who would it make more sense to trade for Myles Garrett and spend possible long term resources for short term benefits? The Detroit Lions or the Chicago Bears? You may not agree, but I think: Detroit Lions, spend a first round pick on a 30 year old guy with two years on his deal? Sure Chicago Bears, spend a first round pick on a 30 year old guy with two years on his deal? Nah There's something qualitatively different between these two teams.
  6. Agreed, in a sense. Every NFL team is an offseason away from being playoff contenders. When I say "contend" i mean "one or two players away from a Super Bowl". I do think the Bears should be able to contend for a playoff spot next year, and if they don't, Poles should be fired.
  7. Just saw that Garrett is about to turn 30. I thought he was younger. Nevermind, I wouldn’t even offer our first for him. Only contending and ready to contend teams should sell out for him.
  8. I’d offer a 1st for Garrett, but nothing more. Do you think you can get his quality of play or better from our 10th overall pick? Probably not, or at least it’s not a great bet. I doubt the Browns will settle for that though. im all for going all-in on offense of course, but if all it took for Garrett was a 1st, I’d do it. Otherwise, you worry about the defense later, next year. This year is all Caleb and all offense.
  9. I don’t usually get mad about this kind of stuff but if Ben Johnson was available last year, and interested in the Bears, and could have coached Caleb on his rookie season instead of Matt horsefeathers Eberflus what the horsefeathers was going on at Halas Hall. How did this whole past season even happen??
  10. I'm stoked that the Bears have won consecutive off-seasons, I'm anxious to see some of it translate onto the field.
  11. I really wouldn't mind tendering a small contract to Jenkins. I don't know if he can stay healthy enough to be a dependable starter, but he's a beast when he's healthy and not bad to have around on a roster.
  12. i dont really care about the other QBs. Caleb showed me a lot last year, and I hope his trajectory continues upwards.
  13. To his credit, he's a very good DC. Never, ever hire him as a head coach.
  14. Sure, and I’m being a little facetious to make a broader point: there’s no reason for the Bears to not spend right up into the cap
  15. Why not break the bank though? They have like 70 mil in free cap space, who cares
  16. I know that the Chiefs have lost before, but it doesn't seem like they're allowed to lose. Chiefs win, probably a close one.
  17. Yeah it was pretty infuriating honestly. I'm very glad the NFL has learned that you should be more aggressive on 4th down and going for 2, but it was obviously wrong in both these games.
  18. As an OSU fan, I'm fine with the trade off
  19. they're keeping Hightower huh? I mean, I don't think Special teams Coordinator is a hugely important position, but he did have a couple big mistakes last year and well...I dunno. I guess its nice to have some continuity somewhere.
  20. If there’s a city that deserves a championship more than Chicago, it’s Buffalo. That’s one long suffering franchise
  21. And to be fair, Poles *said* they’d be competing this year. They weren’t trying to sell a rebuild this year, they said they were going to compete. they just sucked
  22. Rooting very hard against the commanders because I don’t like how much attention and credit they’re getting for doing things the right way
  23. It’s gonna be so painful waiting 8+ months to see this all together, but on the other hand, it’s great for Johnson to have so long to implement, teach and perfect his scheme with Caleb and co. i am just so impatient to see an actual offense here. God willing we’ll get one
  24. Yes absolutely. You could crush QBs like 3 seconds after they released the ball, it was nuts. I’m glad that’s no longer the case, though I do think the current way they call RTP is a bit over the top and excessively punishes defenses. another big shift since then: the footwork of QBs. Quarterbacks are just doing whatever they want while they drop back. It really makes timing with receiver routes very difficult, and precision passing almost impossible. Of course this changed with Bill Walsh and the West Coast offense.
  25. A little while ago, I saw that at least some of the ‘85 Bears full games were on YouTube, and I started watching the Bears-Rams playoff game. I’ve never seen any full 85 games (as I was -3 years old at the time), but I was actually surprised how much the flow of the game resembled football today. The passing game of course is a lot jankier, but not so crazily different. NFL films highlights doesn’t do it justice. Cool stuff.
