  1. It's not just the Bears, it happened several times against the Eagles (the last play of the game was an example of one, that was rightfully picked off but also "should" have been pass interference as well) And this is good evidence that QBs, especially developing QBs, shouldn't be afraid to just lob balls up there, or put them in some danger, because contrary to how it was 30-40 years ago, its simply not true that more bad things than good things can happen on a pass play. Receivers are way better, defenders are legally not able to do as much as they used to break up passes, and the game is called in a way to incentivize more explosive plays and scoring. It might seem like the worst thing you can do as a QB is throw a pick, but honestly, it's far worse for you to take a sack than it is to throw a ball into danger. These days, anyway.
  2. The thing that I find inexplicable about Jordan Love is he’s the only NFL qb I see consistently throw up complete lollipops, like the equivalent to baseball pop fly, and his receivers somehow just always catch them. Defenders fall over, or misplay the ball, or cause pass interference. It’s not that the receivers are wide open or anything - these are seriously bad passes…and yet he always gets a positive play out of it. It’s truly maddening.
  3. Eh, I don't know if you can say that for sure, Love was still very good this year. I don't know how we're defining 'franchise QB' these days, but he's definitely a good player. Someone worth committing tens of millions to. But he hasn't shown that he has Favre-Rodgers talent yet, no, that's true. Us Bears fans may have finally found the Packers don't have a HALL OF FAME level QB yet. But it remains to be seen. (Because the Football Gods hate us) Annoying to see Jayden Daniels go out and win a playoff game. I haven't been super upset at the Caleb-Daniels-Nix-Whatever comparisons, but it does irk me to see the Commanders go out and win so effortlessly while we've struggled so mightily.
  4. If we were talking about a competent organization, interviewing as many people as possible is a boon: You get to meet them, learn about them, and possibly make connections for the future. *More* interviews isn't necessarily a sign of weakness, dysfunction, or indecision. There are ways you benefit from interviewing people for HC even if you don't really have any real belief you'll sign them. Of course, the Bears aren't a competently run organization.
  5. I’m less bothered by the Bears not starting their interview process until the end of the season than other people. They clearly honed in on who they wanted to talk to in the last few weeks and months - they just didn’t interview people until the season ended. I can see that being a distraction to the team and Thomas Brown and why introduce more uncertainty while the season is ongoing. I don’t think any other team was interviewing coaches mid season so I don’t think it really cost us anything.
  6. Thankful Vrabel is off the board and saves Poles from himself. By the way they keep interviewing people. We’re up to 20 or so candidates it’s kind of nuts.
  7. I think they’re two different things, or rather, the way you get there are different. When I hear ownership is “cheap” I hear: the ownership refused to extend the money to use in payroll. When you have a GM who is leery and reticent to spend over the cap because of value reasons or to avoid being in cap hell (whether or not it’s a real thing or not), it’s a very different thing. i don’t think the Bears ownership is insisting on the Bears payroll being under the cap for any reason. I think Poles is just Like That. now you might say: ok they signed Poles BECAUSE they knew he’d underspend. I guess that’s a possibility in some way, but you don’t make any more money for being under the cap. That money largely has to go back to the players anyway. Poles does it for strategic reasons. You might say, well, that’s dumb. And I agree.
  8. Thanks for the post. That all checks out to me. I definitely would love to see Poles have a little more chutzpah in the FA market.
  9. In a vacuum, I really do appreciate that Poles wants to build through the draft (and trade) and not blow up the salary cap. In practice.... well it hasn't worked out super great. But you guys really don't appreciate how nice it is to not be in salary cap hell all the time. Take a look at the Cleveland Browns, for example.
  10. They also extended Johnson and DJ Moore. And Kmet. They extend people - they just often extend the wrong people or the right people at the wrong age. The clear philosophy is they have hoped to build through the draft and extend their own guys. The problem is: They haven't drafted super well.
  11. Listen im not a cap expert guy but I have an intuitive understanding that you can't really save money by not meeting the cap. Here's what the robots at Google tell me: I mean, I guess you could consistently be 10% under the cap if you want to save like, 20 million dollars, but i dont think the Bears are doing that The "Cheapness" explanation doesn't explain anything: They're just idiots.
  12. do....do you think thats what motivated the decisions the last few years? to save a couple million dollars? i mean, its...possible. I guess, but I think more they just made bad personnel decisions.
  13. Right. I guess some people think they cheaped out on the head coach with Eberflus (I think? Please correct me if I'm wrong), but I don't think that was motivated by saving a couple million here or there. They just liked the guy. (Wrongly).
  14. I'm fine with them going to Arlington heights. I just hope they get something done in general. I'm not too worried about how much they spend. There's a salary cap. Cheapness hasn't really been an issue since that's been introduced.
  15. So if we're waiting on Ben Johnson, we may have to wait a loooooong time
  16. If the Bears do go with an assistant who's on a playoff team, the hire wont be finalized until after the team is eliminated/wins the Super Bowl, right?
  17. this is finely crafted performance art
  18. Tunzi rocks. We need some more of that energy in here to be honest.
  19. A one-legged Kelce will drag 3 defenders into the end zone for the winning score while the refs ignore an egregious hands to the face penalty by an offensive lineman. We all know this will be true. I’ll be pulling for the Lions though. It’ll sadly make the Bears all the more embarrassed, but Detroit deserves something nice for a change.
  20. 100%. If Campbell can get a superbowl win for the Lions, nobody in Detroit will care if it all blows up immediately afterwards. I sure cherish the 2016 Cubs and will thank Maddon and co for it, even if they squandered a great core and organization after that.
  21. nothing. my own impression. its based on zero facts or logic. but i stand by it
  22. You know, for as much as we punted, and for as well as he apparently did, I rarely felt the impact of his punts. (This probably has much more to do with how bad the offense was and how bad the defense was from mid-season on) Which is a point in favor of Kyle's theory that there's no such thing as a special punter.
  23. I'll stand by my personal opinion of Dan Campbell: His horsefeathers will work really well until it doesn't, and when it blows up, its gonna blow up bad.
  24. has anything actually insightful ever been imparted from a press conference? I mean, sometimes you can find out how stupid a coach/GM is from what they say, but has the reverse ever been true. has anyone listened to a press conference and got something important or intelligible from it? It's all just coachspeak aphorisms. I think Belichick had it right. Feed the press/public horsefeathers and keep them in the dark.
