  1. They have to do something! I mean they can't keep this up... You could have made the same case practically any day this month. 4 game sweep in San Diego, 3 game sweep at home, then an off day. Following the disgrace that was the White Sox series. We have been making the case, I am just hoping that with each passing day and with the amount of suckitude getting worse that maybe, just maybe Hendry can pull his head out of his rearend long enough to pull the trigger. I know we've been making the case, my point was just that Hendry had the chance long ago. MacPhail foolishly extended Hendry way too early in the season. If you are going to wait to see how the team responds during the season, why not wait more than a week? Give it 2 months and see what's going on. Hendry refuses to make moves this early in the season, why resign him that early? Given the foolish nature in everything management does, I don't think there is enough losing that can cause them to make a change. They'll probably demote some guys and call-up Womack.

  3. Reverse that.
  4. As has been mentioned in the past, the last time the Cubs were 18-28 (.391 %)was on this date in 2002. The difference is they were in the middle of a 5 game winning streak to get to that record. Their winning percentage dropped a bit from there, then settled around the .400 mark the rest of the year.
  5. Well, Hendry ignored Pierre's atrocious 2005 and now it's biting the Cubs in the behind. It's hard to ignore .276/.326/.354. And he had an even worse OPS in 2002 with the Rockies. Pierre was anything but a sure bet. On the plus side, he's actually been good on the base paths. If Hendry had ignored Patterson's 2005 numbers he would have been vilified even more than ignoring Pierre's 2005. Pierre was a better bet than Patterson for the Cubs in 2006 and folks are telling tales if they say otherwise. Why are they telling tales? I wanted Patterson over Pierre forever.
  6. Would now be a bad time to mention Maddux's ERA is over 4.30?
  7. Baker was given a lot more talent, and lot more time to work with.
  8. Jim doesn't respond to e-mails. Daggum computer crap is for those stats sissies. Real men talk on the phone.
  9. I don't see how this proves any point. The overemphasis (and thus, overpaying) on the bullpen - along with leadoff and role players - kept funds away from addressing the real problems on the team.
  10. Come on.... Perez has started 1 out the last 8 games. Aren't you kind of stretching a point here ? Perez has multiple at bats in 7 of the last 9 games. That's far too many.
  11. Ed Lynch "resigned" in the middle of a season. I think the GM firings are mostly offseason moves. But there have been exceptions. Allard Baird was brought into KC in the middle of a season. The MacPhail Hendry turnover happened midseason (although that's not really the same). Cam Bonifay was fired midseason in Pittsburgh. Steve Phillip's predecessor was booted midseason. Detroit booted both their GM and manager very early in 2002. I think part of this is due to the fact that GM's generally get more time than managers to begin with. Manager turover tends to happen much more frequently.
  12. He came from the amateur game, and might be best suited for that game.
  13. They had 3 extended losing streaks. 7, 8 and 8 games. And they had a career year out of Lee, and a top of the line Ramirez.
  14. I think ignoring Nomar was the biggest mistake. It was extremely foolish. The 2nd mistake was putting so much emphasis on getting a stereotypical leadoff man. The 3rd was resigning bum role players to way too much money. The 4th was ignoring starting pitching. The 5th was Jones's contract. The biggest mistakes of his tenure has been ignoring the value of walks and overvaluing physical tools.
  15. When was the last time they had this bad of a winning percentage, this late in the season? They are at .400 right now. In 2002 they finished at .414. It's one thing to be 9 under in September, but when you are 9 under in May, that shows you something. On May 24, 2002, the Cubs were 18-28, a .378 winning percentage, 9 games behind the Reds. A loss today and they'll be 18-28, isn't that a .391 winning percentage?
  16. It's not the money. It's the message that the extension sent. It says, we're happy with the job you're doing, and we want you around for several more years. And if they were happy with the job Hendry had done as of a few weeks ago, I doubt a handful of losses in a 162 game season has changed their minds. It's partially the message, but it's also the fact that the Cubs flinch at paying people who don't work for them. GM and manager contracts are rarely allowed to run-out, guys demand extensions early so as to not be a lame duck. But a 2 year extension pretty much guarantees Jim is here through most of 2007, if not all.
  17. The quoted part above is another perfect example of why the entire management team needs to be kicked to the curb. A comment like this is supposed to net a huge return in trade? OTHER GM- "Uh, yes Jim, I'd like a pitcher than will never become the consistent innings eater that he was drafted to become." Jim-"Great! Got any Tony Womack's or Jose Macias' on your roster that you could give me for Prior? I'll pay most of Prior's contract if you do." And why just Prior? If you are going to trade Prior, trade everyone else too. Start all over again. But, if they do start over again, please start with a new management team that understands how to build a long term, successful team. Or draft Tex.
  18. I'll be the guy giving you most of your business.
  19. Ok, then why are you still watching this year? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just curious for your POV...I mean, its a bit masochistic to watch these guys if you're only watching to see them win... Well, call me what you will. I'm still watching in hopes that they'll win. I've turned off my fair share of games when the loss became inevitable.
  20. I fluctuate between all the steps. I'm pissed at all the losing, still bargaining against the fates for something good to happen, depressed when I think of the opportunity they've wasted, and I've pretty much accepted what is happening. But I still have moments of denial that they are actually this bad.

  22. If you know the menu before sitting down, it's your own fault for ordering. BUt fried baloney isnt on the menu. Neither was filet mignon.
