  1. True. I be making sense when I be moaning.
  2. They have the right to swap 1st round picks next year -- so they will get NY's pick next year just as long as the Bulls end up with a better record (and it would be shocking if they don't). Do they get to wait until after the lottery next year to make that decision? When is the decision due to be made?
  3. I was shocked to hear Steve Phillips talk about impatient hitters swinging at pitcher's pitches and stuff out of the zone. It was about the most intelligent 3 minutes he's had as an analyst.
  4. When is opening day? These exhibition games are boring.
  5. I'm not singling out Jones. You are singling him out by saying he isn't the problem. I am merely saying he is part of the problem because he is. Aramis has been part of the problem as well, same with Pierre. Murton hasn't been part of the OBP problem, but he has been somewhat of an overall problem. Pierre has been an enormous problem. The difference, of course, is he's a first year player who shouldn't be counted on to do a whole lot. Jones is highly compensated and guaranteed money long-term and has to produce. If you want to talk about THE problem, it is the overall organizational philosopy that ignores the value of the walk. Pitchers who gives up walks by the truckload and hitters who don't take them are all part of the problem.
  6. Out of spite against whom? Cubs fans? Yeah that doesn't make much sense. They'll entend Dusty. Makes more sense than saying the only move is to extend Baker and that things are improving.
  7. There are a lot of uninformed people filling up Yankee Stadium too, for the I was there factor. There are probably a lot in superficial southern california as well. I go to a Phillies Cubs game every year with a group of between 8 and 20 people, of which only a couple of us are actually fans of one of the teams. I think your bashing of people at Cubs games is misguided and just as bad, if not worse, as the bashing by the national media.
  8. Again, just because he isn't THE problem doesn't mean he isn't a problem. Jones's OBP is .321. That's bad. He is a problem. Quit sugar coating it and pretending he's isn't a problem. Sugarcoating? ok... All I did was show the numbers. The outfiled has been terrible. Jones has been the most productive OF though. It's not sugarcoating, its fact. Again, I didn't want him either, I'd be more than happy with someone else in RF. But he's been better than Murton and Pierre, but thats not saying very much. You didn't show the numbers, you showed part of the numbers that made him look the best. For the season, he has a .321 OBP. OBP is more important than SLG. OBP is the Cubs main offensive problem. Jacque Jones has a bad OBP. Jacque Jones is part of the problem. That is all that needs to be said.
  9. Again, just because he isn't THE problem doesn't mean he isn't a problem. Jones's OBP is .321. That's bad. He is a problem. Quit sugar coating it and pretending he's isn't a problem.
  10. They have a lot of physical talent, and athletic talent, but not nearly enough baseball talent.
  11. Why do people try to pretend you can defend any player by saying he is not the problem? Jones is a major part of the problem. His .321 OBP from a corner OF position is a problem. Cubs opponents have an OBP of .338. Jones is therefore worse than the Cubs average opponent at getting on base. There are only 2 teams in the NL with a worse OBP than Jacque Jones, Pittsburgh and the Cubs. Every other team has a higher team OBP. When your corner OF has a worse OBP than the rest of the teams in the league, you are getting poor production from that player. A couple homeruns doesn't change that. OBP is the problem with this team, and Jacque is a major part of that problem.
  12. There were better players this past offseason, and, more importantly, there were better options in past offseasons. I'm so sick of people acting like what we are seeing is some new thing that just sprang on this team. Walks have been a problem for years. OBP has been a problem for years. Offense has been a problem for years. OF has been a problem for years. Jim Hendry didn't just get the job. He's not cleaning up another person's mess. This is his team, all of it. He and Baker got what they were looking for. The problem is they don't know how to look for what can fix it.
  13. Andy MacPhail still refuses to acknowlege the problem with OBP, claiming they just aren't getting the timely hits to drive runners in. This management group is clueless. And I'm pretty sure they are ignoring OBP and walks now out of spite. They used to ignore all non macho unaggressive stuff. But they have to have heard about it now, and they're just putting their fingers in their ears and pretending not to hear. They can't be this dumb. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/story.asp?id=192097
  14. DLee's contract runs the risk of killing this team if he doesn't come back 100%. I don't want him rushing at all. There is nothing good that can come from him being back earlier if he is not the DLee he was before the injury. And I can't see how he'd be close to 100% just 10 days after getting the cast removed. Atrophy has to come into play.
  15. You would have to rely on the manager to properly platoon those guys.
  16. Cubs, 117 AB, 40 BB Opposiiton 158 AB, 81 BB Sox, 157 AB, 82 BB Cards, 143 AB, 62 BB
  17. FYI, Cubs hitters on a 3-2 count, .188 .392 .291, their opposition is hitting .196 .469 .348. ChiSox are hitting .223 .490 .427 on a full count. STL is .245 .476 .427.
  18. Thanks Bruce. How's the humidity? It's pretty sad that Florida's hodge podge lineup has scored 29 more runs than the Cubs this year.
  19. Why wallow in what they failed to do? I'm not wallowing, I'm realizing. They failed to do a whole lot of stuff. They've been failing to do good stuff for a really long time. It's not wallowing to realize that's indicative of a team that's going to continue failing. I don't believe they will continue to fail. You don't believe, or you just want to keep saying that, hoping it will come true? I don't believe they'll lose every game from now until eternity. But their backwards thinking and horrible strategy, not to mention pathetic personel decisions, are a pretty good indicator that they will continue to fail.
  20. So you saw the Cubs win a game with a late rally and you now see a team taht can beat a superior team in a game? Um, I've got news for you, lesser teams beat superior teams virtually every day. Very few teams are playing over their head by winning 1 of 3 games. That last game was different. I'm not going to go in to all the factors because you're smart and probably know most of them. Only the next game and series will tell the tail. No please, I fear I don't know all these factors you speak of. Enlighten me. Convenient that the next series, against the worst team in baseball, is the time to judge where this team is heading, and not the past 15 series.

  23. This team is improving and isn't as bad a people would make it out to be. Are they world beaters right now? No, far from it, but I see this team on the up swing. My sample size is smaller then yours. It's more difficult to see improvement in your sample size. Banedon, you be any type of fan you'd like to be. I believe we're all pulling for the same team. I just choose to see what the team can do today, tomorrow and next week, not what they haven't did yesterday or 2 weeks ago. You're looking at yesterday and last week, as well. The only difference is you are weakening your argument by using too small a sample to judge the team. Nevertheless, even in that short time they are still exhibiting the same problems that plagued them before, ie, no offense, occasional implosions by pitchers. This team is as bad as people are making it out to be, you deliberately choosing to put on blinders and block out the worst parts doesn't change that fact.
  24. You're just grasping at straws to pretend things are getting better. The offense averaged 3.33 runs per game in the time you chose to discuss. That's down from the 3.70 average for the season. They were shut out in one game and scored just 1 in another. So 33% of the time they scored 0 or 1 runs, for the year that has happend 13 out of 43 games, 30% of the time.
  25. While he did have a couple big homers, he was by no means clutch. For his career he hit .248 .312 .388 with runners on, .221 .307 .362 with RISP and 2 outs, .191 .189 .252 with the bases loaded. For a comparison with somebody that people often claim was a choker, Sammy Sosa hit .280 .361 .544 with runners on, .251 .364 .510 with RISP and 2 outs and .295 .337 .570 with the bases loaded. In 2003 in close and late situations, Alex hit .178 .294 .397 and Sammy hit .243 .316 .486. Gonzo had some big hits, but they were more or less flukes, as he sucked most of the time, whether it was so-called clutch situations or run-of-the-mill at bats.
