  1. XM says this game is on 187, but that's just a loop of some Ripkin/Selig/Smoltz conversation. The game is on 186.
  2. The thing is, I can live with one guy like Blanco on the team if he brings "intangibles" to the table (handling pitchers, coach-on-the-field type). I think every team needs one of those guys. The problem is that every single guy on our bench could fit into the category of "brings very little to the table in actual tangible contributions." One guy is fine. Five is a disaster. At least if you have 5 guys like that, bring in a 6th who actual provides some level of production.
  3. One other thing....Miller will hopefully be taking Rusch long relief position when he returns. Marshall is firmly planted in the starting rotation considering the team is 6-2 when Big Sean is on the bump. I'm very concerned about Marshall pitching well past his normal innings pitched total. Having only pitched between 75 and 90 innings per year the past couple years, he's not a good candidate to be in the rotation all season.
  4. The only reason the speed and ball catching hasn't led to more wins is because they didn't have enough of it. It's too bad they don't have team relay races. We would win for sure. If they lost, it would only be because of bad breaks.
  5. The only reason the speed and ball catching hasn't led to more wins is because they didn't have enough of it.
  6. Just because you put the word wash next to the names doesn't mean it's true. Just like putting the words "history of being a good pinch hitter" or "versatile decent player" doesn't make the guy a good bench candidate. The Cubs bench is doing nothing this year. They all stunk last year. Those others benches I mentioned all have threats that are actually doing something with the bat. They have their fair share of no-hit utility guys, but their entire bench does not consist of that type of guy. Many have a legit platoon option who puts up solid numbers against one type of pitcher (exactly what the Cubs need), some of them have guys who, while they might not have a good avg or obp, do provide a good power threat, or maybe they have no power, but they manage to get on base quite often. The Cubs bench has nothing. They suck.
  7. Jacque's repeated poor OF play and baserunning has been very much a part of the problem the past 2 weeks.
  8. Atlanta, Arizona, Cincy, Minnesota, Boston, White Sox, Houston, Dodgers, Milwaukee, Philly, STL, Texas and Toronto all have more threats on their benches than the Cubs. The Cubs have no threats, and none of their bench players are doing anything good. Why do people insist on pretending things aren't what they are? The Cubs bench stinks. Why is that so hard to admit? There are no threats. It was poorly constructed. There are about a dozen utility men/2nd baseman with absolutely no power and extremely limited offensive skills of any variety.
  9. Rey was, he just fumbled the phone and didn't have the strength to pick it back up.
  10. Don't forget that he sucked for Cincinnati too. And for Arizona, and Colorado Womack's OPS+ since leaving Pitt. 80, 72, 65, 73, 40, 51 (AZ), 4 (COL), 47 (CHC), 93 (STL), 47 (NYY) 73 is his career average
  11. Of the upcoming road interleague games, which stadium does Womack "know best"?
  12. that would be quite a feat, but not one they accomplished. The only teams as bad as the nats (marlins and pirates) have gotten crushed by the cubs. May 2 vs Pirates, Cubs lose 8-0. Cubs lead series 3-2. The Cubs took 2 of 3 from FLA by a combined score of 14-11. I wouldn't say the Cubs crushed either team.
  13. It is difficult for GMs to do something this early in the season. Other teams know that can get better value the closer to the trade deadline they get. Hendry can ask all he wants right now and get nowhere. It's difficult, but every year moves are made this early. And every year Jim is a GM we've heard the "nobody wants to deal" line only to see other people make deals before Hendry. And it's never too early to fire the worthless coaching staff. Other teams that rebounded from awful starts often did so only after a regime change.
  14. That's a mean mommy. Let the kid live! That's about the best opportunity most any young ballplayer can hope for. There's always time for real life later.
  15. I think it means you stood up once in the first place, then after that, you fall down and stand up 8 times, bringing your total falls to 8 and total stands to 9. But if that happens, you're just a klutz. If you were knocked down 8 times you are probably weak.
  16. Well, I'm not saying there's no way to fit him into a roster. But when he's your primary threat, you are in trouble. You can't just say Mabry has a history of success as a pinch hitter and can play a couple positions, and therefore Hendry did a good job. The makeup of the bench his horrible. There is no threat. Mabry is the prime backup at all 4 corner spots, and that is a joke. Jones needed a platoon partner, Murton probably could have used one as well (a corner OF of Murton/Mabry and Jones/anybody who can hit a lefty) might have provided for better bench threats. But when your first option is a washed up 38 year old coming off a disastrous season, you aren't doing enough for your bench. Ryan Theriot could have Neifi's job for an 1/8th of the cost, leaving a couple million for an actual threat in the OF. But no, Hendry overspent on crap players and failed to field a decent bench. There's no reason for excuses or talking around it. That's just a fact.
  17. Perhaps he should stop accusing people of saying things in the past if he has no idea what they did say in the past. He absolutely deserves to have that ridiculous accusation thrown back in his face. This hindsight stuff is a joke considering how much people talked about Hendry's bad moves before during and after they were made.
  18. All in all, I don't think that this group is a bad bench. Of course, if injuries cause you to play some of these players as regulars, then you have a problem. Mabry- agree Mabry is a 35 year old with a very limited history of success coming off a bad season. Having a decent history doesn't mean a whole lot for an old guy who is slowing down.
  19. There is nothing about the bench that is fine. All this talk about the critics wanting "all stars on the bench" is just rubbish. The Cubs bench sucks. They have a bunch of no hitting scrubs. Most good benches have at least a couple weapons, who at least provide a threat. They aren't .300/.350/.500 type hitters (although you will find some bench guys that can provide that split in a platoon). The Cubs bench is nothing but a bunch of 25th men. Utility guys who are crappy at most everything they do. Hendry did a poor job at putting together the bench, just as he did a poor job of putting together the rest of the team. There's no reason to excuse it just because bench guys aren't supposed to be great. They are supposed to be good at something, and not just at fielding.
  20. I'll agree with that last sentence. I can't believe we aren't further out than we are. It helps that Cincy and Hou have the same record as the Cubs over the past 10 days (3-7), and that STL was in only 3rd place before it's 7-3 run.
  21. He's hitting .273/.308/.482 overall, really bad. He's hitting .319/.351/.571 vs RHP, which is really good. He's a bad everyday corner OF, but a good platoon guy.
  22. If we didn't have to censor our language my post frequency would triple due to the amount of time it takes me to translate what I want to say to what I can say. And nobody wants my post frequency to triple.
