  1. I supposedly can, on Directv. Washington Nationals at Chicago Cubs 8:00 pm 744
  2. Some expected that or higher, others expected a little lower. Nobody expected him to be this bad.
  3. Phil Rogers is probably most of the voters. I could not comprehend how ridiculous that column was. What kind of reasoning is that? I know he's a BS artist and just writes stuff for the reaction, but part of me thinks he actually believes some of this garbage. The only reason you should resign Dusty is if you think he's the right man to bring the Cubs to the World Series. Who cares how passionate he is about digging out from the rubble. Odds are he'll except the money, for the money's sake. That won't tell you a thing about his passion.
  4. Just like Prior saying he was okay to go back out after injuring his shoulder? Only incompetent management would allow that to happen.
  5. Did you intentionally leave JP and his sub-.270 OBP out of the list of "killers"? the expectations around him weren't too high, so didn't feel like lumping w/ with the manager, 2 starters and aram. I disagree. The expectations of Pierre were failry high considering we needed him to get on base. And he was the premier offensive acquisition of the offseason, the guy Hendry and Baker centered their entire plan around.
  6. Taking a cue from investment ads on the radio... "Past performance is not indicative of future results" Isn't that what they say on ED commercials?
  7. What do you mean, they're in the way of a higher draft pick.
  8. I know you are being sarcastic but I have seen and heard this excuse so many times I have to comment. The fact that they game Hendry an extension is not an excuse to give one to Baker. All the writers who keep saying you have to give Baker one since Hendry has one are completely insane. This isn't preschool where if one kids brings candy to class he has to share with everybody. You don't justify a stupid extension by saying somebody else got a stupid extension.
  9. It's telling that so many people dismissed the lack of walks/obp, and the general lack of quality offensive players, and pointed to the Astros as an example of just how easy it is to overcome those problems. And now people are pointing at the Astros struggles to start last season as some sort of example for how the Cubs can come back and win it all this season. The Astros achievement last year was historic. They were remarkable. The pitching was absolutely insanely good. It was an amazing story exactly because it does not happen all the time. Thinking the offense would be just fine with some added speed was a terrible mistake. Thinking this stretch is anything but indicative of just how lacking this team is would also be a mistake.
  10. How about the Cubs lose 5 of the next 6, fired Dusty, hire whomever your manager or preference may be, and then go on a tear and win the WC? Alright, so that would be win/win, but I'd have to be much more sure that Dusty would get canned for 1-5 in order to be hoping for that record.
  11. I don't see how this is a win/win situation for the fans. If they go 67-58 the rest of the way, they will finish 82-80, likely no where near playoff contention. That "successful" end to the season will more than likely mean more Baker, which is a bad thing for the Cubs. That "maybe" hope is not win/win. They have to go 75-60 just to get to 90 wins. That's a .600 winning percentage, which is a 97 win season in a full schedule. Nobody can say this team has a chance to be that good. If they play .500 ball from now through June 15, assuming Wood, Prior, Lee and Miller are back by then, they will be 29-36. At that point they'd need to play .629 ball to get to 90 wins. There is no win/win situation for the Cubs right now. They either keep tanking and Dusty is gone (lose/win), keep tanking and Dusty stays (lose/lose), stabilize and Dusty stays (lose/lose), or go on a hot streak and Dusty stays (win/lose).
  12. And what kind of chance has he been given to do anything against them in the majors? Practically none. You can't say a guy can't hit lefties if he isn't given a chance to hit lefties. I can't say he definitely can hit major league lefties just because he hit them in the minors. I can say it's stupid not to give a guy the chance in the majors though.
  13. [insert something about manager getting the most out of players here] then dusty deserves credit for making lee an mvp candidate. sure you want to go there? ;) Sure. Once you list the debits and credits, it won't be hard to see that his tenure in Chicago has been a huge negative.
  14. Well, whaddya expect? Put on a Cub uniform, forget how to play baseball. He wasn't that good before he put on a Cubs uniform.
  15. Actually lots of people make a living hitting minor league pitching. It's just not a very prosperous one. Just because you want to dismiss minor league production doesn't mean it can't be included in rational debate. You said all signs indicated he couldn't hit lefties. I think a large amount of minor league at bats can easily outwiegh a handful of major league at bats spread out over multiple years, as well as personel decisions made by the Cubs. It's your opinion that he can't hit lefties, but you have no more evidence than those that say he might be able to if given a chance. It's been stated before in this thread because it's an important fact to remember, even though you insist on ignoring it.
  16. You just gotta love that proto/stereotypical leadoff man.
  17. Except for the fact that he hit them in the minors. What does Karros's acquisition tell us? It tells us the Cubs wanted a nearly washed up veteran to hang around and "solidify" the position. That happens all the time, and it's usually a waste. Teams overpay for veteran stability when in reality they can get same or similar production for much cheaper out of pre-arbitration players. Also, Karros was part of the Hundley trade. It was more about getting rid of Todd than really wanting Karros.
  18. [insert something about manager getting the most out of players here]
  19. He barely has 100 PA's against LHP in 3 years. That's what's called a self fulfilling prophecy. A guy gets labeled as someone who can't hit LHP(even though in Choi's case he hit them fine and never got a chance to prove it at the MLB level), and then sees so few of them after that he never gets a chance to show his abilities. Wow, I didn't know he still had that few chances against LHP. It amazes me how unimaginitive baseball people can be. They hear something about a player once and it sticks with him for his career.
  20. Time Warner bought out Turner around 1996. Yes, he was owner as they built them up, but a corporation has been at the helm for most of their division titles. If you think corporate ownership is the problem, how do you explain the Phillip Wrigley era? They were an abomination for much of his time. Ownership change could be nice. But management change is more important to the fortunes of the team, and a more realistic goal for fans to quest.
  21. The problems go back much further than this offseason. Last offseason was bad. And several missed opportunities in the past have come back to haunt this team. This funk didn't just appear out of nowhere. It comes with the territory when you make the decisions the Cubs have made collectively.
  22. Disney was only the primary owner from about 1999-2002. They were under .500 the year Moreno bought them and are under .500 now. I'm not sure about the winning percentage, but the fact remains you can win with a corporate owner. And if you want to talk about winning percentage, what about the Braves and Time Warner? This is a pointless topic. Ownership structure does not guarantee a thing. An individual owner can be just as profit driven, or maybe moreso, as some "faceless corporation". Generic corporation bashing very rarely has any substance to it. It's just an easy target that nobody is going to defend. Owners hire somebody to run the team and give them resources to spend on the team. The Trib hired a well respected baseball man with a championship pedigree. Andy brought this team to some respectability. Maybe it's time for him to leave. It's definitely time for Hendry and Baker to leave. But fans should call for ownership to make those moves. Wasting time asking them to sell is pointless.
