  1. I know the likelihood of Hendry being canned is almost nil, given the extension. And that Andy's job is safe as long as the bottom line keeps up. But it doesn't make sense to say Andy or the Trib wouldn't fire people because it would mean admitting making a mistake. The Trib has fired several people since they've been owners. They've kept Andy on for a long time because up until very recently, this team was on an upward trend and thriving as a business. Andy fired Lynch. He's fired managers as well. The only person this might apply to is Hendry, who has stuck with the same gameplan for years, has never showed an ounce of doubt in Baker. The only exception was the firing of Kim, but by all accounts nobody wanted to do it.
  2. Also, I'm extremely impressed with the punctuation of your sentence. That can't be right, can it?
  3. It's incredibly wide spread. Everybody hates him here.
  4. Hendry found his reason for giving Dusty an extension.
  5. Funny you should say that. The other night Jeter hit a soft grounder to the left side that should have been an error on the 3B as well as the SS, but he was credited with a 2 RBI single. ARod smoked a line to deep LF that the OF had to reach up to grab. ARod has a 900+ OPS with runners on and with runners in scoring position. He's been bad in close and late situations this year, but it's been just 22 at bats, and he had a 945 OPS from 2003-2005 in those situations. Jeter played on great teams every year he's been up so he's had a ton of chances in the playoffs. He's come through in some of those chances, which caused people to label him as clutch. But he's been the same hitter in the regular season as he has in the postseason and has has his fair share of "coming up short when it counts" moments, but is immune.
  6. I think the ones that take longer might mean more games, since they are building their case. Kendall brawled on a Tuesday and was suspended by Friday, for 4 games. If we don't hear anything by today, you might be looking at a super long "statement" suspension.
  7. The kids have helped bring them into the toilet. What have I said that's over the top? Admitting you are wrong and then sticking to your guns anyway would just reiterate the trollish behavior. You know they haven't brought the team into the toilet. You knew that before you started the thread. You knew that veterans were just as bad.
  8. It's almost as if Hendry's plan: Improve the bullpen, speed and defense, ignore starting pitching, OBP and SLG; isn't working out very well.
  9. If we don't win, JH can never extend DB!! Make no mistake, I don't want DB back, but I couldn't ever bring myself to actually root against the Cubs. If it was announced that Dusty would be fired if the Cubs lost this game, I could easily root against them. They are going to lose at least 60 anyway. The problem is we know poor results don't necessarily guarantee any change.
  10. The Rangers picked up ~$50 million, depending on what part of his salary that applied to, and how much the Yanks would be willing to pick up of the remainder, it should be discussed. Although I'd remain on the sideline if it's the full contract (throw Pierre, Jones, Neifi, Rusch, Hendry and Baker together and I might talk).
  11. Goony, I think you watch for more then just wins and losses. I would wager that you enjoy discussing the team, going to the ballpark, trying to figure out ways to make the team better, even rolling your eyes at Dusty. If not, you wouldn't be a fixture on the Cubs' Internet to the point that when I went to the ESPN board after a two year hiatus last year I asked, "Where's goony, beerhere, raw, u_of_kentucky, etc...." and got directed here. I said, "only watch to see the team win." For pretty much anyone that posts here regularly they're clearly getting something from this team besides watching them win...and that holds true even when the team is hot. Nope, I only watch them in hopes that they'll win. I get nothing else out of it. All the rest is just a form of venting all the disappointment.
  12. I don't fault them for taking the money either, but I can hold it against them for not living up to their contracts, no matter if they were deserve in the first place.
  13. i need to rip pierre, rusch, jones and nef more often. No, you just have to stop being a troll by purposefully starting argument with ignorant statements like the kids are bringing the team into the toilet when other non-kids have been just as bad. That was just an incredibly stupid thing for you to write and you deserve to have people rip it. You were obviously just looking for a fight, which is what you do 75% of the time you post. The kids have been bad, so have the veterans. The kids didn't bring this team into the toilet on their own. Pierre didn't bring this team into the toilet on his own.
  14. I think the veterans have a greater responsibility to do better. They don't have the excuse of learning the new level, and their salaries require higher levels of production. Pointing out that Cedeno and Murton have been bad is perfectly fine. Saying they have brought the team into the toilet is ignorant and obvious trolling. It's not excuse making to say others have been just as bad. It's ridiculous to say the kids led them into the toilet when others have been just as bad or worse.
  15. I would love to see them dump ARod on the Cubs. Sure there's a package that could work, I'm just not sure what it is.
  16. So you deny that the lack of walks has been the Cubs biggest problem offensively in recent years? It's all just been one giant coincidence?
  17. Oh please. Juan Pierre, Todd Walker, Jerry Hairston, John Mabry, the entire bench, Glendon Rusch and Greg Maddux have all been just as bad, if not worst, than any of the kids.
  18. The walk is sexy? The problem is the walk isn't sexy enough for the Cubs to see it's value. Better yet, it's not macho enough for the Cubs to see its value.
  19. If you don't watch a pro team to see them win, then what is the point of watching them?
  20. Question for Bruce and Truffle: Any hope for a rain delay or postponement? Bruce, I hope you get to enjoy the Clevelander while you're down there.
  21. The May 15 off-day was my bright light of hope last week. Hey, the Cubs actually have 2 off days in the next week, the excitement grows. Between this up-coming off day (May 25) and the one on June 12, the Cubs have 3 games vs ATL, 7 vs CIN, 3 vs STL and 3 vs HOU. This May swoon hasn't been as damaging as it could have been, since it was mostly against non-division opponents and nobody in the division ran away with it. Now, any prolonged slump over the next 3 weeks is going to mean disaster in the standings.
  22. The May 15 off-day was my bright light of hope last week.
  23. I think he's an interesting 25th man on the roster. Unfortunately, the Cubs have about 5 25th men on the roster, so each one is just all the more annoying.
  24. I don't follow. He's probably confusing the up-coming draft (based on last year's record) with next year's draft (based on this year's record).
  25. Nah, it's much more simple than that. No conspiracies going on. The fact is Jim and Andy don't have a clue about what is wrong with the Cubs and what needs to be done to fix it.
