  1. I could outstrategize him, but the players would laugh me out of the dugout before I had a chance.
  2. Thinking that way is like buying lottery tickets because, you know, you can't win if you don't play. Not even a close second in comparison. No, it's actually a great comparison. Saying the Cubs can do rally and make the playoffs because Houston did something similar last year is hoping for extremely rare occurences to happen back to back. And it also deflects criticism from the awful job the people in charge have done in putting together this team. This is not a 95 win team that hit a few bad breaks. This is a bad team playing awful baseball because of a lack of foresight and gross negligence.
  3. those numbers have declined every year since 2003. he is on pace for career lows in his hitting rate stats. he is also on pace for a career high in strikeouts. he is mediocre, and if he continues playing like this, he is awful. As I said, easy to complain now instead of seeing what happens. Pierre's starting to get his stroke back though. Yes, it's easy to complain now, because he sucks. And it was easy to complain when they got him because he was coming off of a bad year. Since when do you have to wait to the end of the season to complain about a player who is hurting your team right now. Pierre hasn't done a gosh darn thing for the Cubs. I don't care how much he helped Florida in 2003. He's a one dimensional player whose one dimension is to suck right now. He's killing the team.
  4. He may be a washed up veteran, but he'd be leading the team in HRs and RBIs right now. TEAM DEPENDENT
  5. I think this will be merged or locked soon. And I think this is a pretty typical Cubs move, mostly worthless 35 year old coming off a terrible season. But he's probably a man's man with a great attitude and lots of intangibles. Maybe he can provide a little punch off the bench against LHP.
  6. I gave up on that show years ago. You might find yourself understanding a whole lot more about baseball without having those guys literally decaying your brain. i agree, in fact when i used to watch it, i usually did so with the sound down and misic playing in the background. its actually a decent show if you mute it. True, it used to be fun to get some highlights from around the league, especially at a bar when you had no idea what went on that day/night. And if the sound is off, it is much better.
  7. He just finished a 50 day suspension for roids, and started a new cycle after the WBC.
  8. More 35 year olds please. Coming off an awful year he's doing crap again this season, although he's hit lefties relatively well.
  9. I gave up on that show years ago. You might find yourself understanding a whole lot more about baseball without having those guys literally decaying your brain.
  10. And I don't think that is anwhere close to a realistic request.
  11. How in the world are they comparable? I mean other than age and Cy Young awards. Clemens was far better than Greg last year (221 ERA+ to 101 ERA+). And Clemens is likely to be much better than Maddux this year. I'm telling you you have to get over the 2005 Astros and start thinking realistically. The Astros were an amazing story last year exactly because they did something nobody else did, and that tells you nobody else is likely to do it again. If you're a high school coach trying to rally the troops for the big game against a much better rival, go ahead with the "they did it, we can do it" speech. But spare the rest of us.
  12. Not a fair comparison, Pierre was not brought in to drive guys in. Sure, it is part of his all around job duty, but I would rather his RBI's be down and his OBP up! True...that was more of a joke. But I'll be happy to see what he earns per appearance on base. Clemens doesn't really get paid per pitch, he gets paid for recording outs and not giving up runs. Pierre might not have been brought in for RBI, but he should have a heck of a lot more than he does now. Perhaps we should think about how much Pierre gets paid per out he makes, which at this point, isn't that much.
  13. The Marlins were trying to build a fan base with short-term success. The Cubs don't need to build a fan base. But they do need to maintain theirs because extended failure has always, and will always lead to a decline in attendance, ratings, revenue, etc. I'd rather the media focused on calling out Cubs management for being idiots with their personel decision instead of the tired old crutch of criticizing the ownership for being cheap.
  14. I've heard rumors to that effect for a while. And the general consensus among the beat writers is that the signing is inevitable. By the way, isn't Stone doing the Cards/Astros game? Did he say it?
  15. This is the atttitude the Cubs Front Office always has, and it bites them every time. They would always rather go for quantity over quality. He'll make $13 million for the rest of the year, or roughly equal to the salaries the Cubs are paying to: Hairston ((2.3) Perez (2.5) Rusch (2.75) Pierre (5.75) So would you rather pay $13 million for one great player, or $13.4 for four awful ones? Ok, I'll give you 3 of those players, although I think one of those players has a lot of upside on defense. But to call Pierre awful is a BIG stretch. Struggling in 1/4 of the year, even if he's starting to come back little by little, does not an awful player make. He's been quite good over the past few years. Who has upside based on defense? And what does that even mean? Is the player playing really poorly on defense but he has a good chance of being great with some development? It is not a stretch at all to call Pierre awful. He's had a mediocre career. He sucked last year and he's been awful this year. Just because he's famous and a lot of people call him a prototypical leadoff man doesn't mean he's not awful.
  16. In order to get the Wild Card, the Cubs would have to catapult over 9 teams. There are other divisions, too. Houston catapulted over 12. Very tough road to hoe, but not impossible. We'll see what happens. houston had good players And achieved a near miracle with those players. Hoping for miracles is not good planning.
  17. The Mets aren't trading him for anything close to what you listed.
  18. What would respect for the team accomplish? And how would people with a history with one of the worst franchises in pro sports garner anymore respect than others from outside the organization? I think the only benefit would be some fans would think it was a good thing, but as for a real benefit to the team, I don't see any.
  19. NSBB.com or the Platte River Valley? I think some do overrated his defense, but it's much better than Pierre's and very good.
  20. Define worth? Is it a ridiculous amount of money? Yes. But look at the salaries of Mussina, Johnson, Hampton, Pedro etc. They all get a ton of money per pitch. If Clemens pitches anywhere close to as well as he pitched last year, I'd have to say he was "worth" it, in relation to others who make the big bucks.
  21. I'm all for it and have never defended Hendry in overpaying for bad bench players. I just think $12 million plus for a little over half a season for a 43 year old pitcher is not a good baseball decision, for the Cubs or any team. He's not superman and no one defies the effects of age forever. He defied it for quite some time. It's not an absurd risk to gamble that he'll still be very good this year. And he pays back a huge chunk of that money in increased revenue.
  22. I don't know about Billy. He's got very limited coaching history and has never really shown much desire to keep doing it. The great ones almost always fail when trying to teach their own craft.
  23. And you can pay them $325k, or similar, when you find the same level of production out of a kid. Theriot can do everything Neifi can do. Hill is a better option than Rusch. Soto could do Blanco's job with ease. Pierre was not a must have player. This is why people complain when management overpays for mediocre players. It's not that we're concerned the Trib is wasting money. It's the fact that we know money is being misappropriated by a management team that believes heavily in overpaying bad veteran bench players and stears clear of star free agent difference makers.
  24. When he is added to the major league roster, he gets a one-year contract worth $22,000,022 - his uniform number is 22. Because he won't be playing the full season, he gets only a prorated percentage of that, which would come to about $12.25 million if he rejoins Houston in late June. The tentative goal is to have him start against the Minnesota Twins on June 22 - if he's put on the big league roster on that day, he would earn $12,632,307. Oops...missed that part. Still too much though. Why? He's very likely to give you 4 months of some of the best starting pitching in the game (and bring in a ton of outside revenue). As has been pointed out elsewhere, when teams choose to spread the money around (really I'm talking about the Cubs now) they tend to overpay a bunch of mediocre or worse players to do what some minimum wage kid can do. Why pay $12+m on scrubs that can be replaced with $300k kids and a $12+m stud?
  25. Crazy thought: Did picking Womack off the trash heap make Pierre expendable in a deal? I would like to believe his inept play made him expendable.
