  1. I know who's not in front - me. 28 points on BYU. 13 on Fresno. 11 on Navy. I always suck in bowl picks, but I've never been almost completely sunk after one day before.
  2. He did a Ball State game last year. I have no idea how that happened. The two teams shot like 80 combined free throws. Notre Dame beat another nobody tonight. They'll beat another nobody on Monday. I look forward to actually playing real teams again. Stupid Texas losing.
  3. I don't think McHale's selling KG for 5 cents on the dollar, if that, was a 'failure' at all. If you ask me (and there's some evidence of it), he passed up better offers to send him to Boston to help the Celts. Ironic since Celts fans spent half last season whining about how unfair the Pau Gasol trade was.
  4. Favre will as well - which may be deserved. The Jets sucked last year and Favre has come in and now they're decent. oh come on. I question whether he should get it or not. The additions of guys like Kris Jenkins and Calvin Pace (I think they got him this past offseason) definitely helped, but would the Jets be where they are now with Kellen Clemens or Chad Pennington? They weren't last year with those two, so I doubt it. Considering Pennington has been better than Favre this year, I imagine they would be. Of course, you can't just play the stat game with what-ifs because of the other factors, but on paper, the Jets would be better off with Pennington.
  5. The only person I'd definitely put right with him is Adrian Peterson. Michael Turner deserves a mention too.
  6. It would probably require some major Cardinal pixie shenanigans to keep us from winning the division, but I doubt we really clobber everyone. Probably 90 wins or thereabouts.
  7. It's kinda crazy the Panthers can get the number 1 seed with a win. Are you counting on them to be crappy again next year like they always seem to do after a playoff season? Probably not, though a lot depends on what they do at QB. Delhomme's contract is up at the end of the year - they could keep him, try to get Cassel, draft someone, who knows. With "Smash and Dash" (I love the mini-controversy over who came up with that name) back and Smith just turning 30 in May, I imagine they'll be pretty good again next year. Though I'll have to admit, playing the NFC North and AFC West this year (we were 7-1 in those games) probably helped a bit.
  8. Let's see. Notre Dame went 10-2 in 2006, with lopsided losses to the schools who in my opinion are their two biggest rivals (Michigan and USC). Notre Dame went 3-9 in 2007. Now, while we got crushed by both those schools and didn't beat them, the season really would not have been much better if we traded wins in those games for wins over Duke and Stanford at the end. I liked 2006 more. So, yeah.
  9. Carolina clinches the #1 seed with a win but stands an excellent chance of falling into a division tie if they lose because they go to New Orleans in week 17 (no NFC South team has beaten another on the road) while Tampa and Atlanta play cupcakes. It's not quite the ultimate all-or-nothing game because we'll make the playoffs no matter what but it's very very important.
  10. They've also had pretty poor recruiting the last few years. I don't see them bowling until at least 2010.
  11. Ball State hires offensive coordinator Stan Parrish as head coach. I didn't see this coming. I didn't think Parrish wanted to be a head coach. Him hanging around should hopefully minimize recruiting defections though. It could even help keep Nate Davis around, though I doubt it'll actually work. Still, I'm glad they could get Parrish. Takes a tiny amount of the sting out of this whole situation.
  12. I thought no one. Speaking as someone who's never rooted for an ND team ranked this high prior to 08-09, it's cool to be ranked high. I'm not too concerned with it though. The Big East is better than last year's version and we're going to lose too many league games to continue to be ranked as high as we are.
  13. Wasn't Hoke a darkhorse for Michigan? And Michigan's a much better job than Auburn. Gill was a darkhorse for UCLA last year. Not that UCLA is a better job than Auburn or Michigan but they aren't the worst BCS football program around. Indiana says hi. Excuse me while I cry in the corner . . . Don't cry too long, though. Washington/WAZZU trump Indiana by quite a bit (at least in recent history). Washington State is in a far worse spot than IU right now and Washington is probably a little behind them too. I would say that whoever UW hires will probably be a better coach than Bill Lynch, though.
  14. Hoke's name was tossed around in media rumor mills for that job because that's who employed him before Ball State did (as associate head coach/defensive line I think). I'm friends with the beat writer for our student paper and never got any indication that he was considered for it.
  15. I'm sure Gill's fine (heck, I'm sure he's better than fine), but at the moment, he is what Brady Hoke was last year (took a horrible program to a bowl), with the addendum that Buffalo managed to sneak out of a horrible division and beat us, which we didn't have the benefit of last year. And no one was clamoring for Hoke to get a big-time job.
  16. Buffalo won 7 regular-season games and needed a hail mary miracle to beat Temple, but yeah, the ONLY reason not to hire Turner Gill is his blackness. I'd go out on a limb and say that if a white coach had Turner Gill's current resume, he'd never have been interviewed at all for that job. Gene Chizik was a horrible hire, but there had to be other reasons in play here, and Chizik's previous employment at Auburn was doubtless one of them.
  17. Oh for crying out loud. It's getting harder and harder to make my annual trip to Wrigley.
  18. Hoke's gone. I'm so pissed off at our administration - Collins, Gora, the whole crew. He'll take Stan Parrish with him. Nate Davis is gone. Some of the recruits are probably gone. Hopefully Kelly Page, the QB-in-waiting, isn't. I always knew it would never get better than this year, but I didn't think it would be this bad so soon after.
  19. you guys have some pretty lax "favorite team" rules in Indiana Come again?
  20. Ball State has abysmal facilities and abysmal pay. SDSU would offer better facilities, a better conference and an easier area of the country to recruit. And he'd be getting paid over twice as much as he is now. Ball State needs to pony up.
  21. One school that was rumored to be after Hoke down. If SDSU goes another way...
  22. Notre Dame scared the crap out of me tonight but extended their homecourt win streak to 41, 74-67 over Boston U. Harangody racked up 23 and 15, taking over in the 2nd half. McAlarney rang up 16.
  23. As it happens, the editor for the paper I'm freelancing for is an SDSU grad, so he's told me about this. I don't see Hoke leaving unless Nate Davis does. Davis already said he's staying. That said, I have to think Walker is the favorite anyway. He'd be a great hire for SDSU.
  24. The bad part is that there isn't much in the way of top QBs uncommitted right now. Devlin picked a horrible time to decide to transfer as most all of the good QBs are mostly locked up. If JoPa wants one in this class, he'll likely have to steal one away from another team. which he may be able to do, since they won't be buried in the depth chart for 2 years anymore Possible, though QBs are a weird breed. Matt Barkley (top QB prospect in this class) is heading to USC despite there being three former five star recruits in front of him. And Notre Dame got the #1 ranked QB the previous two years (Clausen, Crist). Still having trouble figuring that one out.
  25. Maybe if Kosuke plays for Japan he'll recapture his mojo? Really reaching.
