  1. Wittenmeyer actually did come up with a bit of new stuff, saying we can hold on to him all year, without extending him, if we feel like we may be ready to compete in 2013.
  2. I think Howard ultimately signs longterm with Orlando. Deron's going to head out of Brooklyn or Jersey or wherever he's at, go to Dallas probably, and they won't have anything of value to trade for Dwight.(they'll keep Dirk)
  3. We could be that team. I imagine we would offer a package including guys like Vogelbach and Szczur... but are those players good enough to headline a package to land Hamels? Philly loves toolsy types. If we were to get involved with them, Baez would be an almost definite part of a deal for him. And it wouldn't shock me if they wanted Brett as well. Basically, it's going to take a lot of convincing play by the Cubs to get me to even think about wanting to add a Hamels type this deadline. Even knowing there's at least a chance he's off the market without us getting a chance at him.
  4. The real issue is we've got a bunch of players much more valuable to us, than they would be on the trade market. Plus, this new CBA sucks bigtime, in limiting what a team can do to add anything. It's going to be the rich and the poor when it comes to FA. The top guys will get their max deals, but everyone else probably just saw their salaries get cut by half or so, when all is said and done. The penalties for going over the luxury tax thresholds are insane. And if Cuban wouldn't ante up to keep Chandler because of it, I seriously doubt other owners would either.
  5. How are you going to get him to like the city of Chicago?
  6. Card fans are happy about this, so why would I be?
  7. Tough spot honestly. I personally don't think this current Bulls team was ever winning a championship. That said, I can't say I know that for sure obviously. Do you give this exact group, with maybe a minor tweak or two another year or do you try and add a big piece and decimate quite a bit of what you've built and not know how players will mesh?
  8. This was Theo's fault.
  9. While he's certainly dug himself a hole as to whether not he'll be able to put up a solid looking state line this season, I'm starting to think the cold weather may be a solid reason for at least some of Marco's early season struggles.
  10. Honestly, I'd never heard of him. I looked him up and my guess is he's a guy that goes to college. Needs to add weight and some velo too. Very projectsble with his build, but I'm not sure he's even considered a top 100 high school righty. So if he's considered signable, I guess he could go somewhere between round 6-10.
  11. Not a pipedream at all. In fact I honestly think at least one will be there at 6. More than one if Giolito proves to be healthy. As for Almora, I see nothing wrong with him at all. Didn't mean to insinuate otherwise, just thought it was noteworthy to see Callis had us passing on Correa.
  12. I think my personal top 6 mock starts with Houston taking Gausman, Twins take Buxton, Zunino goes to Seattle, Baltimore with Correa, KC passes on Appel to take Giolito, and we get Appel at 6.
  13. Callis has his first mock up at BA. No Giolito at all and has us passing on Correa for Almora.
  14. I'm not ready to accept that we won't be buyers. Matt Szczur and Trey McNutt aren't going to get us much.
  15. My guess at who's available, as least on some level, this deadline, in concerns to us. Figuring we'll have Soto, LaHair possibly, Garza possibly, Dempster, and Maholm available. Starting Pitching- Buccolz, Peavy, Floyd, McCarthy, Colon, King Felix(doubt he's moved), Hamels, Blanton, Wandy, Bedard Catchers- Suzuki, Hundley 1st Basemen- Butler, Dunn, Youkilis, Morneau, Lee
  16. They could get a very big return for Halladay. True, but they're going to most likely look at this as a one year deal and try contending again immediately, so I doubt they'd put him on the market.
  17. What do they have to sell off? Hamels? Sure, but that's risky, since they supposedly want him back. Victorino could probably get them something decent and I could see them moving in a different direction in CF. Everyone else has too big of a contract to move, other than Blanton, who's not going to get them a big return under any circumstance.
  18. Keith Law just said Samardzija's emergence is easily the biggest story of the baseball season for him. Looks at him as a likely 3 going forward.
  19. Nate, sorry to pile on here, but do you know how long Golden is going to be out?
  20. Did you miss Zimmer intentionally, because I'd certainly think he's higher on the Cubs wish list than Wacha.
  21. No Shark on the thrilling side? I'm really thinking he's the single biggest story we've got right now. If he's truly learned to keep the same motion consistently, I have no clue what his true ceiling is. He's probably the most athletic pitcher in baseball and if he's gotten his throwing motion down, he could be unreal for us.
  22. It'd be really nice to have two lefty bats that conceivably could hit you 30 homers, with Castro and another bigtime addition to the lineup as well. Plus, Jackson hopefully getting you around 20 or so too.
  23. Yeah, I just can't see how his defense out there cancels out his bat. I think he'd be quite an upgrade from Soriano once everything is weighed in. It's a best case scenario for us, since we're still paying 18 mill a year at that position and now we could have a guy producing from it, for the league minimum. I'll trade him, but I really want value for him, he could really be a bigtime help if he sticks around here, even if he stumbles all over himself in LF.
  24. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/bryan-lahair-success-sustainable/ Decent article from Fangraphs on what LaHair can sustain.
  25. Stewart's not a disappointment to me, because his luck has been awful. He's truly been much better than what his numbers obviously show. Russell has been solid out of the pen, but he was last year too, so I guess while I'm certainly happy about it, it's not a surprise to me either. The coaching staff is a little surprising to me, because of the stats TT posted in the game thread yesterday: They're actually making a positive difference in exactly what they set out to do it in, baserunning and defense. Considering I expected to be fine with this group, it's still surprising to me, that a coaching staff has done this much positive in this short of a time.
