  1. Marwin Gonzalez got picked. Watkins has every bit as much and probably more upside. Rusin has been successful at every level, is very polished, and could probably help most bullpens out right now, with a shot at being a 5th starter/ swing guy still. Which has value as a lefty obviously. The only reason he's not already on our 40 man, is because he hasn't had to be added yet. Neither of these guys will be regulars, but both should wind up spending some seasons in the majors, in my opinion. To me, that's enough of a reason for a team likely to pick them off us, if given a chance.
  2. I'd keep Watkins. He'd get taken by someone most likely. Rusin is a guy we'll definitely lose if he's not kept.
  3. Levine acted like no one cares about it, in a chat recently and even wondered if it could be swept under the rug.
  4. I saw it somewhere, maybe CubsDen had it? All I remember is this is something I irrationally worry about and after seeing the list, even I'm not worried.
  5. If it looks like Rose is going to miss half the year and we do very little to upgrade anything, plus lose some key pieces, I wouldn't be above punting next season. Run the team through Boozer and Deng, try to enhance any trade value with them. Get Butler lots of PT, same with whoever is drafted this year, to try and develop them somewhat as rotation guys anyway. Have a lottery pick in 2013, bring over Mirotic, and let Rose get himself completely healthy. Maybe by then, Boozer has gone away somehow.
  6. I think keeping Garza hinges on Shark continuing to progress, but also on whether or not LaHair looks like he's a true middle of the order bat, plus has the ability to be at least Dunn level in LF. If both those things are a go, one bat and one arm seems like what's needed for us to contend. Not counting pen help, which shouldn't be expensive for us anyway.
  7. I've read a couple of places that the Royals don't like Appel for some reason. So, if Houston passes on him for Gausman, I honestly think he'll be sitting there at 6 for us. If Houston takes Buxton, my guess is the Twins take Appel or Zimmer at 2. Seattle seems like a lock for Zunino at 3 and my guess is unless Giolito is healthy, the O's take either Correa or Almora at 4. KC almost definitely takes one of the college pitchers, so it should be Gausman or Zimmer at 5. But, if Gausman goes 1st I think Appel is a Cub.
  8. I'm pretty sure that's the shark from Undercover Brother.
  9. I catch myself thinking he's got to beat 61, not 73. And I am not a Bonds hater by any stretch. The record books are just screwed up now, with little hope of that one ever being broken.
  10. Just like this year with Vlad and DLee and a few others, there's going to be a few leftovers hanging around for teams to choose from. Even if a team bit and took on Soriano, the key isn't the money, it's the extra years you'd have him. No one is goinng to give anything remotely valuable for him. I think our absolute best case scenario is finding a team willing to commit 6 to 9 mill total for him and just take him off our hands. And he'd have to be putting up solid numbers for that to even happen. My guess is we DFA him around the ASB next year personally.
  11. Without looking back at his starts, I doubt he's ever had this bad of an issue with it before. It's not a bad idea though. I'm starting to think he's just a guy that can't put it all together and pitches down to what his peripherals say. But I do think we should give him a chance out of the pen. But I want Travis Wood in the rotation very soon.
  12. My guess is if we had signed him, we'd be wondering if he still worked for the Cards secretly. I wonder at what point the age accusations start getting loud.
  13. Shark may be 27, but his arm isn't. I think his lack of arm mileage is a gigantic reason to extend him if we are comfortable he is legit. With the amount of cash we should have available, even if we keep Garza and Shark is legit, I want another TOR starter to go with those 2. There would still be money to address hitting as well.
  14. According to Rosenthal, extension talks are going "very well".
  15. I thought he was going to start out with Daytona. Who knows? I'll be safe and say that IS where he spends most of the season, getting a little work in Tennessee before season's end.
  16. That's a horrible strategy when you have a top-10 pick; but an intriguing idea with one of the sandwich picks. With the way everything has changed though, maybe you could even get by with getting Fried or Almora as a slight below slot signing. If you know for sure Fried isn't getting picked till 11, for instance, maybe you could get him at 8th pick slot? I guess it all comes down to who truly has the leverage, but with this CBA, I think agents are going to have to tell their clients that the gravy train is over and if you want to be a pro, the quicker you get started, the less risk you're taking. An injury is going to kill off some of these kids value and it sucks. Giolito could very well be the first example, but I guess we'll see on him.
  17. That's a horrible strategy when you have a top-10 pick; but an intriguing idea with one of the sandwich picks. You'd really have to play it by feel. My guess is this year, there's going to be a hell of a lot of prenegotiated deals as it is. But saving 500K or so on a early pick and maybe 200K on a 4th or 5th rounder could net us one extra big bonus guy, especially if we also use our allowed overage and pay the monetary penalty.
  18. I'm starting to think Volstad could be a great fit in the pen. His arbour salary makes him a rather expensive bullpen piece, but it may be his real calling.
  19. The reason it doesn't make sense is with Rose and Noah's escalating salaries, the cap room we save by dropping Boozer is mostly eaten up without us being able to use it.
  20. One potential strategy though could be try to negotiate a below slot deal with a Stroman or Shaffer, to give us extra cash to spend later on. Of course, the same strategy can be done later on as well, without us missing out on the top talent we can get.
  21. I have no interest in McCullers given how unsignable he's expected to be. Gallo has massive contact issues, I have little interest in him too. Would McCullers be unsignable at 6 though? That's a huge risk on his part, with this damn CBA. He's got flaws, but if we thought of him as a starter, he's probably got as good of an arm as anyone in the draft. Gallo has the Ryan Harvey bust factor obviously, but he's got such power, I could at least reason out the upside possibly. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I want ANY of this group, just saying I could make myself be happy, based on potential upside.
  22. I wonder how many games Rose and Deng miss to start the season? I think adding a solid PG is probably our biggest need, unless we find a trade for a true 2nd scorer.
  23. My honest guess is with him struggling recently, we're giving him a few days off to clear his head a bit.
  24. I guess I'm waiting for Torreyes to go on a 20 for 40 type streak. He's not K'ing, so I doubt he's overmatched. He's my guy, so I'm going to go down swinging with him.
  25. I don't know about you guys, but I change my mind constantly on who I want at 6. And I don't think there is a single player, other than Buxton(sorry Tim) that's guaranteed to be off the board when we pick. I think I could even be happy with some guys who we probably aren't looking at, at 6. Stroman, Shaffer, Hawkins, McCullers, and Gallo. My guess is we get one of the big 3 pitchers though. A healthy Giolito would almost definitely be my top choice.
