    I disagree that signing Counsell indicated anything other than, "we want the best manager in baseball". They could have taken any path afterward and it would have been the right move.

    When there was such an obvious omission of mentioning 3B in Morel's case, it occurred to me that if they were negotiating with Chapman, they would want to be very careful in that regard.

    Morel is one solid jump away from being a superstar-caliber bat. I wish there was a way to quantify likeliness to make that jump, but his combo of youth + talent + some success at the ML level makes him so tantalizing, if only because this lineup could desperately use that kind of threat. Busch is a guy not too far behind on that imaginary scale, which is why I'm pretty pleased with the trade. I'd hate to see Morel moved for anything less than Luzardo.

    Juan Cruz's 2 seamer moved like a whiffle ball. I thought he was going to be the best of them.

    I don't understand what makes Pasquantino such a hot commodity. 26 y.o. 1b/dh with a great hit tool who was worth 0.0 WAR last season. Educate me.

    Apparently the Royals and Marlins discussed Pasquantino for Luzardo. If he's truly available, would prefer Luzardo over Cease easily.

    I said this somewhere yesterday but BTV has PCA and Wesneski as an overpay for Luzardo. Would do that in a heartbeat once they re-signed Bellinger.

    If they do re-sign Bellinger, I propose they double up toward the top of the rotation. At one point the Marlins were said to be open to moving a starter, I believe. Glasnow and then maybe Luzardo? (PCA and Wesneski is an overpay on BTV) Steele/Luzardo/Glasnow/Hendricks/Taillon/Wicks/Assad has plenty of depth and an exciting ceiling, as well. Seems like a more reliable path to 90+ wins than trying to nail a Mancini-tier acquisition or two.

    The other impact player I was referring to was Stroman. Yes, he fell off dramatically, but he was a TOR pitcher for 1/2 of the season, and even with Bellinger and Stroman, the Cubs fell short. Replacing them gets us back to that level, perhaps a touch better with internal developments. Do we expect Glasnow to give us 180+ innings? By how much do we expect him to outpace Stroman's '23? Resigning Bellinger and trading for Glasnow feels a lot like running it back to me. Not hopeless, just a major market team comfortable with being 'competitive' again. If they make those moves, let's hope that's just the start.

    I probably have more faith in Jed than is justified, and there's still plenty of time to make moves, but the team is down multiple impact players and has a lot of work to do to get to 90+ wins.

    Mooney posted something generic and unrelated to Ohtani 10 hours ago. With that exception, they (the Cubs beat writers) all went dark on Wednesday. I can see taking a break after the winter meetings but other teams' guys are still tweeting....

    To what TT said, I think firing Ross was the first indicator that the organization believed in the roster they had created, at least more than the average fan believed. They have a long road just to get back to that level, however. I'm still cautiously optimistic but there's a lot of work ahead.

    Living in L.A. obviously wasn't a deal breaker when he initially came over. The Angel's had two possible selling points (other than $$$). Playing with the best player in the world, and living in Southern California. Maybe he chose them in spite of L.A. but it was more likely a point in their favor.
