  1. He was good and went out with a bang, but I think his low power totals will be his downfall.
  2. What an amazing way to close out 1998 (320/397/594/991). I'd vote yes for him based on that alone, but he ruined it by coming back in 99 (204/260/339/599).
  3. The problem is the Cubs don't have anybody more promising than Kelton ready to take 460 ABs in a corner OF spot in Iowa. Who do they have slated for the OF? Greenberg, Sing, Bacon, Creighton & Montanez ended last year at AA. So probably some mix of them, though not sure if Montanez will be in AAA. I would like to see Creighton and Montanez spend a little more time at AA, but I don't know if that will be the case since there seems to be a shortage right now. Greenberg, Pie, Bacon, and Sing are all likely candidates, but I could see Sing possibly taking over 1B for Hoffpauir after starting in AA. I think he would benefit from a little more time there. Then again, we need to find a spot for Matt Ciaramella (PTBNL for JVB), possibly at AA.
  4. There was an article in a denver newspaper saying Grissom might sign with the Cubs. The other 9 and a half pages is arguing. Somebody also threw out some obscure stats to make somebody completely unrelated to this thread seem more impressive than what they really are. Then there was more arguing.
  5. Well, if ARod, Pujols, Cabrera, Bonds, Vlad, DLee (last year), Dontrelle, Pedro, Manny, etc. aren't up to par with "sabermetrics", then there is a racist element. I find it hard to believe that would be the case, however.
  6. Could it just be a minor league deal with a ST invite? Has Grissom reached that "I'm really bad and old and just want a chance" phase of his career yet?
  7. If Guzman is healthy and pitching as well as he is capable, as some have said, I'd rather see him in that #5 spot even if that means Hill spends the entire season in Des Moines. Guzman > Hill.
  8. 2 "Yes" votes = 2 drunk posters. I forgot all about this dude.
  9. Proof they'll put anybody on the ballot.
  10. Gee, as much as I loved him in Cubbie blue... Nope.
  11. Had he stayed healthy and put up decent numbers for another 2-3 years, I would definitely say yes. I think he falls just short. (Of course, I thought that about Kirby too, but ...)
  12. Graduated #1 in his class at the Madden School For Doing Nothing But Pointing Out The Friggin Obvious (or MSFDNBPOTFO)
  13. Why not Brian Giles? What? Huh? Too late? Hmm, I guess the little one would do. Of course, Walker's pretty good. I sure wish it was an option to keep him.
  14. Bonds didn't take kindly to that ... didn't he say after the game that Zambrano "better learn to respect", or something stupid like that? Bonds, who flips his bat and stands at the plate watching his moonshots, talking about old school respect ... what a joke. I can't find the exact quote anywhere, but I believe that was when Carlos fired back with words to the effect of 'my father taught me not to be afraid of anyone, I'm not going to start with him (Bonds)'
  15. Hyperbole. That trade would've been far worse than this move. As a side note, making Jones a platoon player wouldn't be that bad a move, as Jones is actually a major league hitter against righties. Of course, Murton's AB's would then be quite limited. Pet peeve: identifying one poster's feelings as hyperbole. There was no deliberate exaggeration in my post whatsoever. Signing, and likely overpaying for, someone like Preston Wilson forcing Murton to the bench would be an assinine move. Murton will likely duplicate, if not better, Wilson's production at the league minimum, not to mention taking on that additional, and extremely unnecessary salary could potentially limit mid-season deals to help the team. So yes, signing Wilson would, as my post said, nearly make me as sick as trading Prior for Tejada.
  16. I would flip a coin and not be disappointed either way it landed. Z has better "stuff", but Prior is a better "pitcher". Either way, they are both amazing.
  17. A 1 year contract with Wilson would be a bad thing. Murton should put up equal or better numbers at a fraction of the cost.
  18. If he would ever put up decent numbers, I would consider him. 10 mil for a mediocre pitcher who will turn 30 next year is a big no thanks in my book. A guy who throws 200 innings is one thing, we need someone who can do it productively.
  19. Once again, I believe mention of that site has been unofficially banned here, but that would make me nearly as sick as trading Prior for Tejada would have.
  20. If we're going to be that crazy with making moves, why not sit Jones on the bench and give Pie a shot? We could live with his growing pains in that lineup.
  21. Heh! What did the Cubs pay for Jerry Hairston last year? 17m? Hairston only made 1.8 mil last year. We paid Fontenot 15.2 mil to play in Des Moines... http://forums.gigantour.com/images/smilies/eeka.gif
  22. I don't know, he's only been dealt once mid-season, and he did spend the entire 1997 season with the Bucs. Nah, he'll be elsewhere by July 26...
