  1. In the short term there may be negative consequences, but what about at the end of the year when that #1 guy has 34, 35 starts and he's going against a guy who has only gone 31, 32 starts because everybody went in their assigned spot? I like the staying with the rotation for the benefits you may see at the end of the year and in the playoffs if you get there.
  2. Are they still considering the Marlins a minor-league team in the majors? His 1st appearance was against Boston College.
  3. I'm listening to the Sports Bash on ESPN radio and they were just talking about JHJr being involved and I thought the guy had misspoken, but apparently not. Interesting some of the stuff I've read online today about HGH and some of the effects they claim it has. Lots of stuff about higher energy levels and generally feeling better along with the muscle mass increases.
  4. You also can't see where those balls are being hit from. The guy could be in the infield and Soriano isn't getting the normal amount of time or angle to read a ball that he might be used to.
  5. Well you'd have to look at teams that had a 96 loss season and then spend $300 million in the offseason after that. This case is unique. What does the W-L record and offseason spending have to do with Dempster's struggles and possibilities of returning to form? Number of save opportunities. Number of times Dempster was not allowed to pitch for days on end. Remember we've all talked about this before. Adding $300 million worth of players also raises the regularity Dempster will be used because they will be leading in more ballgames. . And an overall higher confidence in all the players because they KNOW they are much improved. This is exactly how I feel. I think the lack of usage coupled with Dempster's already not so great control led to a lack of confidence in his pitches when he did get out there and he got roughed up. He was absolutely fine the year before when he got regular work and had his confidence riding high. I think more opportunities and the new season should be all he needs to find his groove. I hope.
  6. aping = mimicking acromegaly is more commonly referred to as gigantism. I guess that biology degree is paying off for me, eh.
  7. I was listening to the Dan Patrick show when they announced they had the results and Olberman was on with him when they did. Olberman was irate with the results and basically said that if he wasn't on live radio that he would call all the mebers of the veterans commitee every name in the book for not electing Santo. At least some people in the media have a clue when it comes to this issue.
  8. Because it's baseball and not horse racing or polo?????? :D
  9. That is as much Rex's responsibility as anyones. He has to see where the blitz is coming from and adjust accordingly so that he's not getting drilled in the middle of his drop by an unblocked blitzer.
  10. I think you're at the point right now where his value can't really get any lower, so unless a deal is something that a team is overpaying for what he gave you last year or is close to what his maximum value is, I don't deal him.
  11. I'm partial to the outstanding codpiece.
  12. He wasn't horrible his first 2 years with the Cardinals. How do you explain 2006? He must have won every time he was even decent, because his RS was decidedly average. It's just kind of weird. Last year he kind of seemed to pitch to the run support he got, with the exception of those total blowups he had in some games. Just on memory, I remeber a lot of the games he pitched being pretty close like a 3-2 game or the crap start he would have where it would be 8-7.
  13. Zito is an extreme fly ball pitcher who has gotten a lot of help from the spacious Oakland Coliseum and it's huge foul territory. Plus, he's pitched a ton of innings and with all those curveballs just seems ripe for injury to me, but that's just my opinion.
  14. From everything I've read, posting fee has no impact on luxury tax numbers.
  15. Boras gross profit might be high but his net profit is nowhere near his gross. He has to hire dozens of people to assist him with these clients. I am reasonably sure Boras is stinking rich but I don't think he makes that much off of individual contracts. After paying the bills I imagine it is about 1 or 2% of the contract. Do you really think that's all he nets? I can't imagine his gross is less than 5% of the cash he brings in even after paying all the help. Even if it is 2%, that's still almost $2.5 mil on Beltran's deal in his pocket.
  16. Actually, if he went back to Japan for the next season, he would be a free agent after that--no more posting involved. Incorrect, he doesn't have the service time to be a FA after next year so there would be another posting according to Boras.
  17. I don't sew why he would be any worse than Jones was in right. Jones may be able to get to the ball quicker, but he cant throw it into the infield to save his life. Manny may not get to the ball as fast but he has a cannon. So its a trade off, in my opinion. Manny has a horrible throwing arm. It can't be as bad as Jacque's based on the number of assists he's had in recent years, especially compared to our OF last year.
  18. what are his politics? how do you even know what his politics are? I don't get it either. I could care less if a guy has diametrically opposed views to me on each & every issue. You deliver a WS to this old Cub fan? You're a saint. He and Kurt Warner were in political ads in St. Louis during the WS opposing the stem cell research proposition that was on the ballot. As a person with a science background, I found the ads offensive because they so blatantly distorted the small amount of truth what they were saying contained. Plus they're idiots for having their viewpoint, but that's just my opinion. But, back on track, Suppan will be too expensive for what he's worth. Even though Weaver's agent is Boras, I think he'll try to sign a short term deal to get his price tag back up and then strike while the iron is hot after Duncan fixes him. No thanks to Mulder, we have enough of those already. Watch it. That's why I said it was just my opinion, which I and everyone else is entitled to. No offense intended, those ads just really pissed me off.

  20. I think the best part of that lineup is that there aren't any gaping black hole like there were last year. The only real bad spot would be Jones against lefties. The pitching is ok, but you only have that one good power arm for the playoffs in Zambrano unless Prior gets healthy. I think that team would make a very strong push for the playoffs because the pitching is decent and the lineup will score some runs, assuming everyone is healthy. And unless somebody else in the Central starts spending, there may not be a lot of competition.
  21. Apparently someone's been Dusty-ized!!!!!!
  22. If the rumors of getting Westbrook for a SS and reliever are true, it wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs did go and get Lugo. The money would be there, especially if Eyre is the reliever going. Westbrook at $6M and Lugo at ~$8M would about equal Izturis at ~$4.5M and whatever free agent they get at $7-10M.
  23. I think it has to do with the supposition that Hendry is after him or Cliff Lee and Westbrook is the better option of the 2, but I'll look up some numbers too. Pitched almost 6 2/3 per start with an ERA of 4.17, 2.3 BB/9, 4.5 K/9, whip is a little high (2006 stats). I guess I'm kind of with you Tim. Nothing spectacular, may get a little help going to the NL, but he's a serviceable guy and if he can be had for little I'm not against it. I wouldn't want to give up Murton for him
  24. I prefer regular Pepsi but Diet Coke, not sure why. Everybody I know who likes the regular of either prefers the diet of the other. Weird if you ask me.
  25. It's funny because normally the majority of our posters are fiscally conservative about what the Cubs are spending for big names, but now a lot of people don't care...just sign a bunch of people and worry about the negatives later. I think the majority of the posters have no problem over-spending for good players. It's the 3/13 million for DeRosa's of the world that drives everyone here crazy... Not everyone, I certainly saw the value in it and there were several other people that didnt have a problem with it either. Try not to speak for everyone, just because the majority agrees with you. I wasn't dancing in the streets over it but I certainly understand why he was signed even if it was slightly over paying. I think alot of people are going to be eating crow on the DeRosa signing. Not to turn this into another DeRosa thread, but Mike North tried to make a point today that Mr. DeRosa fit 'a little too well' in his uniform last year compared to his other years. Probably just unfounded speculation, but can't dismiss it altogether I might normally take that report into account if : A. It didn't come from a complete and total waste of skin like Mike North and B. If there weren't numerous reports of a completely new hitting approach and C. There was a huge power increase inthere, which there wasn't Did I mention Mike North is a raging moronic, non-sensical idiot?
