  1. This is an effect most often seen in basketball teams because one player can have so much more of an effect. The remaining players up their level of play for a short time but run out of gas after a few weeks, maybe a month. With the Cubs, the pitching held them in there for a couple of weeks with the offense getting an occasional timely hit. Now the pitching is crap, there is no hitting and you get what we're seeing. When Lee comes back, you'll most likely see a couple of week surge and then the fall back to reality. This team wasn't good enough to begin with and to expect them to sustain the pace they were on without Lee, Wood, and Prior and the leadership those guys provide is just false hope. I'll get off my soapbox now.
  2. I don't think any of them want to be out there any more. Yesterday's loss may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Hopefully today's pathetic display will be the one that breaks Dusty's.
  3. Or at least Murray or Sucliffe. They should let Len and Bob start drinking after the Cubs fall behind by 5 runs. Why should they wait that long, it's just a matter of time before it happens anyway. Let 'em have fun from the get go.
  4. Well, when the bullpen is this overused in a stretch like this, I guess you can't expect a whole lot different results. Has there been more than 2 games in this stretch where the starter has gone 7 full innings?
  5. Future trivia question? After Green's AB, I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes.
  6. And may I ask why you think of that? Solid but not spectacular Minor League numbers, where he was slightly old for his leagues. Very low K rates(and corresponding K/BB ratio) at the big league level, and nothing completely great with opposing batting lines. He gets a ton of groundballs, but it seems to me his ceiling is that of a Jon Lieber, which seems to fall short of the hype he was receiving in the thread thus far. Didn't Jon Lieber start to have star like numbers before he blew out his elbow? You could certainly do a lot worse than a Lieber like ceiling for a run of the mill guy like Jones and another player, be it Guzman or someone else.
  7. No, just Dusty and Jones. Especially Dusty.
  8. Yes, there could be a silver lining. ...yeah right! Dusty didn't give up the 3-run homer. We should be booing Dempster. Yeha, dempster gave up the HR, but when was the last time he pitched. That would be Dusty's fault. It's also Dusty's fault for bunting Pierre to 2nd w/Piazza catching. Just dumb, dumb and a whole lot more dumb. The game would at least be tied at this point if not for DUMB.
  9. Why's that? I got no radio or tv in St. Louis.
  10. Is he really that unhittable today or are the Padres just having a Cub-like day at the dish?
  11. It is however Dusty's fault that his highest OBP guy was hitting 8th today. Just one of many dumb decisions he makes on a regular basis.
  12. That's not the point. It may not have made a difference today, but on an everyday basis, it will cost you a ton of runs because you have the pitcher and not an RBI guy hitting behind your highest OBP guy. It's the kind of dumb thing that Dusty seems to do on a regular basis with no rhyme or reason that makes most of us insane.
  13. Don't they have a pretty solid near-ready guy at AAA? Edit:Brad Eldred?
  14. It could be argued that the Cubs would actually win in that senario. Actually, the fans would win in that case because all of the players would have to be replaced. At this point, I would consider that a good thing (minus those on the DL, of course).
  15. I blame not shutting down Wood last season. In retrospect, that is looking like the dumb move we all thought is was when they were letting him pitch out of the pen. Pity management wasn't bright enough to figure out what we could.
  16. I went to a game in SF in the summer of 04 and had an interesting conversation with some Giants fans in the bleachers. Every one of them was glad to be rid of Baker and said we soon would be as well. I was skeptical at that point, but after the collapse the last week of that season, among all the other crap that went on, I finally saw what they were talking about. Trust me, we're not the only ones who can't stand the guy managing their team.
  17. Anybody see his hitting streak and avg. up to .278 with 7 steals?
  18. He already walked once today. Barrett's the least of our concern when it comes to approach. I hate to say it, but Ronny's our biggest concern in that area. Last time I checked (a day or two ago), he was the 4th lowest out of all qualified batters in pitchers per plate appearance. Ronny takes fewer pitches than Vlad Guerrero. He's not striking out much is he? Not that that's the be all end all, but he's not swinging at picthes in his eyes or a foot and a half off the plat. His OBP is going to be avg. driven, but everybody already knew that.
  19. not that this has anything to do with jones hitting lefties, but he did win the game yesterday. Just letting him sit when the other options are completly unknown commodities or have so far not been good is a 50/50 chance of hit or miss. I guess I'm willing to take a chance on Jones because he has come up with big hits in key situations several times already this year. Not that he's exempt from criticism or the bench, but I think it's a bit early to crucify the guy. Anybody have any idea if he is a slow starter as a rule?
  20. I don't think people want to give up the farm for a stop gap, but they want to remian in contention until Lee and the arms are back in action. It's been said by several people that they want someone cheap that won't require a lot of prospect or any very good ones.
  21. Did Clark sign a multi-year deal or is he done after this season?
  22. I think that may be a little over the top. The shoulder is the absolute worst joint in the body to injure, trust me I've had mine fixed twice. I would much rather break my wrist than tear something in my shoulder, there is just so much more structural support around the wrist than the shoulder that you can build up muscles to compensate.
  23. I would imagine something close to that. Probably 6 in the cast, 2 to rehab and start swinging and then a week of minors.
