  1. Sounds like the Rich Hill discussions a few months back. when has Guzman dominated at Iowa? He hasn't yet because he hasn't had the opportunity to. He's still coming off arm injuries and this is the first regular duty he's had in 2 years. I think he needs more time at Iowa to re-establish his control, but you don't just give up on an arm that has that much potential.
  2. Marmol strikes me as kind of a Z type guy. A little struggle with control, power pitcher, pretty good sized guy (obviously not as big as Z), and has wicked movement on his pitches. If he ends up anywhere near Z when (if) he fulfills his potential, thats a great piece of the rotation for years to come.
  3. So Cobb's number should be retired, too? I think Cobb only revolutionized the game and broke records. Which is really all Ruth did, too. No, he did it hammered, which is way cooler. \:D/
  4. Anybody got the skinny on Baez? I see he's made a few starts but mostly relief. Where does he project to help if at all?
  5. Ther's another thread somewhere that shows Wood, Zambrano, and Prior all in the top 11 or so of pitcher abuse points when they've pitch full/mostly full seasons under Baker. That coupled with the high pitcher abuse pts. his guys in SF had and the inconsistent of use of the bullpen are the biggest reasons. The general disdain for young players he has is another in my mind.
  6. So let me see if I get this straight. Since your posts last weekend, you have posted from the following places: Louisiana Texas California Arizona Virginia Pennsylvania North Carolina Florida If I may ask, how many hours/miles can you drive a day legally? Edit to add: I wrote this before your previous post. I'm subject to two concurrent constraints on my time. First, I can drive for a period up to 11 hours after which I must take 10 consecutive hours off. There fore, I guess you could say I can drive 14 hours a day, although it is not normally stated or measured in that way. Secondly, I cannot be on duty (includes driving and non-driving work time) for more than 60 hours in a 7 day period. My son, who is my co-driver at this time, is subject to the same constraints. Therefore, together, we can drive up to 120 hours in a 7 day period. So, while 6,183 miles may seem like a lot to you..... I'm still grumbling about having lost nearly a whole day last Tuesday in AZ, and most of Saturday in PA. We should have made 8,000 !!! I was going to be forced to call you out for illegal driving, Fred. Having a little experince with the DOT regs, I was thinking 6,000 was just a bit over the top for a week. You average about 550-600 miles/day or so if my calculations are correct?
  7. This was exactly what crossed my mind. There were what 24 or so teams in the mid 1970s? Pitchers going in a 4 man rotation means you need 96 regular starting pitchers, plus maybe one extra guy per team for spot starts or in case of injury. Now you have 30 teams going with 5 man rotations plus the extra guy (sometime 2) to make the spot starts and fill in the rotation. You go from needing about 120 guys in 1975 to needing about 180 to fill starting rotations now.
  8. That was refuted by Bruce Miles. He said Hendry wanted prospects but the Dodgers weren't willing to part with them so Hendry took what he could get.
  9. God I hope not. As painful as it is to see them play so poorly, I think it has to continue for Hendry to be able to see that a major overhaul is needed and that his "speed and defense" theory is total crap.
  10. I was at that game as well and my buddy called the dinger. Some little kid behind us heard him and went nuts when he actually hit the HR. The rest of that night is a bit foggy for some reason though.
  11. I know there's no way this will happen, but I wouldn't mind seeing Jones in CF, Murton in one corner and a big bat in the other corner. Assuming Ramirez sticks around, that could be a solid lineup. Of course you have to put somebody else competent at the top of the order along with Murton. Murton Barrett DLee Ramirez CLee/Soriano Jones Izturis Cedeno I think that's a solid 1st six that would score some runs.
  12. I really wish they'd stop playing Theriot. He just gets on base waaaaaaaaay too much (.409 OBP, albeit in limited PT).
  13. Should have been 6 RBI if Pagan knew how to run the bases. I know! How can Pagan, who's blazing fast, not score from second on a double. Pagan's comps show he could develop into a good player, but I'm not sure why he's on the major league team right now. It's not as if he had nothing left to prove in the minors. I don't think he's a rule 5 guy. I think they picked him up because he doesn't have any options left. I could be thinking about Freddy Bynum though.
  14. Should have been 6 RBI if Pagan knew how to run the bases.
  15. What a guy hitting .292 with 28 HR and 82 RBI with a OBP .352 isn't good enough? Huh? Carlos Lee is 96th of qualified players in OBP. He's not a bad player, but on a team that's going to need an OBP stud to overcome low OBP guys in Izturis, Jones, and possibly Cedeno, it's not enough. The OBP guy is going to have to come from a different position. Adding Carlos Lee is adding power to the middle of the lineup, not OBP at the top. If he puts up the line he has now for the rest of this year and next, that is a nice piece to the puzzle to have in the 5 or 6 hole behing Aram or Jones.
  16. I would have no problem giving Aram a 4/50 or 4/52 if that's what it takes to get the deal done. He's worth it and there aren't any options out there that are as good or better. I almost actually hope he opts out so the Cubs can lock him up longer before the market for him gets more expensive than it already is.
  17. Pitching is just a mess. Beyond Z, we have four rotation spots open (3 if you count Prior) and 4 bullpen sports open as well, hopefully Wuertz, Aardsma, and Novoa step forward the rest of the year. How will ther be 4 spots open in the pen? By my calculations, you'll for sure have Howry, Eyre, Dempster, and Rusch (no way he can start next year). Then as a probability you have Wuertz, Novoa, and Ohman. Then maybe Aardsma and some other young/scrap heap guys in the mix as well. No way there are 4 spots open.
  18. I wouldn't have a big problem with that provided the order was Pierre, Barrett, Lee, Ramirez, Sheffield, Jones Izturis, Cedeno. Like you said, not ideal, but a lot better than the crap that was out there this season.
  19. Because Manny Ramirez hits behind him. Pick your poison. As a pitcher, you're just kind of screwed in that situation. The Kruker did come up with an interesting solution though. He said to walk both of them in that situation and hope Lowell grounds into a DP. Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!
  20. Jim Hendry posts here???? Holy crap, we're in the presence of greatness!!!! Or maybe just great amounts of dumbness. You're telling me you would take a Neifi Perez type player at those positions and Alfonso Soriano at all the others and you think you can win? That's the kind of logic that has prevented the Cubs from winning for nearly 100 years.
  21. That only makes sense if the Braves are going to move Giles somewhere....and I don't know why the Braves would downgrade two positions. Giles is better than Loretta and Jones is better than Crisp. Maybe sending Giles for pitching? They've been able to hit the ball lately, but haven't had much pitching.
  22. From ESPN: Ronny Cedeno is just 21-for-126 since June 15 but is 6-for-15 in his last four games, including a homer Sunday off Chris Carpenter. The reason? He's using both of his eyes to scout the ball. Instead of rolling his eyes to pick up the pitch, he's adjusted the angle of his head and it allows him to see the ball more clearly with both eyes. Hope this makes a difference and gets him back up to an acceptable BA, even if his OBP won't ever be that good. He has looked much better the last few days.
  23. This is true and I have proof! It is a strange planet called 'National'; here they are in their native garb watching the mother ship land: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/2006/07/10/mwF5xYhk.jpg To show how big zambrano is next to a mere mortal, it should be noted that Yadier Molina is standing in front of the 2. I think I just peed my pants.
