    I don't have any idea of his availability or contract, but if we're getting an old OF from SF I'd rather have Winn.

    I'd rather have a guy who might hit .280-.300 with a .350-.380 OBP (just potential not that he will or I expect him to) and every single hit is a single than watch the crap that has been going out there evry day lately. I can't imagine the catcher position has been much better than .200/.250/.300 since Barrett got traded. Guess who's been worse than a .550 OPS this year? Kendall. Yes, he's been bad this year. No I'm not jumping up and down that they gave up a potentially good arm to get him. But the guy does have a history of being able to get hits and get on base. He's probably not going to OPS above .700, but if he hits in the 2 spot, I really don't care as long as he's getting on base at a .350 clip.

    Now, I know we're all a bunch of sabremetric people on this site (for the most part anyway), but you get different things out of different players. I would rather have a guy like Kendall in the 2 spot with the potential for a .350-.380 OBP than a guy like we've had in the past who had a .330 OBP and .700 OPS when you've got Lee, Ramirez, and sometimes Floyd hitting behind him to drive him in. Everybody has been a big fan of Kenny Lofton in his hayday. How much power did he hit for? Pretty good guy to have at the top of the lineup though.

    My one worry is that the Cardinals get Edmonds, Carpenter, and Eckstein back and they start playing well. Then Pujols and Rolen remember that they are perrennial all stars and start crushing the ball and end up around career norms for the season. That's my only worry there. The Brewers are possibly still a little young to handle the pressure that goes with the playoff race, but they definitely have the talent to get it done in the not so fantastic NL Central

    Now, is this the case of the Cubs seeing something wrong with a guy that was an easy fix or is he finally just figuring it out after the proverbial "change of scenery"? I'm just curious as Wilken is seen as a draft guru who is very good at identifying projectable talent and wondering if this is something he would have had something to do with.

    the production from SS isn't anything to write home about either And it's not just when Izturis starts. The Cubs are still bottom of the league in SS OPS, and Izturis actually has the best numbers out of the SS position. Plus, RF is still ranked 10th in the league. They are being carried by 3B (2nd in league), 1B (3rd in league), LF (4th) and 2B (5th in league). I can't believe that there are 6 worse RF in the NL than what the Cubs have had. That hasn't been nearly the abyss that SS and CF have been, but I'm surprised it's ranked that high.

    I had that thought the other day when somebody was talking about the Sox calling it a year. What would they want in return? Pitching? IF, OF? Do we even have anything they're interested in?

    1.142 OPS at Coors .845 OPS away from Coors Coors doesn't have nearly the disparity in splits it used to though does it?

    An .055 IsoD, while not spectacular, is certainly respectable for a guy in his 1st full ML season. The BABIP he's sporting may be a little high to be sustained, but his IsoD is far from a big worry in my eyes.

    You're separating the argument into 2 different parts and that isn't what anybody is saying. The argument is that Murton would be an above average player if given regular playing time. Not every player has the same makeup, some guys need to play every day, others can get 5 ABs a week and be very good at doing that. The belief here is that Murton will excel if given a regular job in the everyday lineup, hence the Jeremy Giambi effect. If you want to come up with something in the other direction, call it the Lenny Harris effect. Bottom line is that some players, especially young guys who don't have a lot of ML experience, need regular PT to get in a rhythm and play to their ability.

What a bunch of pathetic, crappy baseball. Ugh! Oh, shouldn't these be reversed? I thought the goal was to have the worst record.

    I see a guy trying to profit off his son's death. Probably doing the same things he did when his son was alive, by blaming others for his kids' failings. so the bar shouldn't be held accountable for their negligence? There was no negligence on the bar's part. They may have served him more alcohol than would allow him to legally drive but went the extra mile to offer him a cab, more than one time if I recall correctly. There is absolutely no way on God's green earth a sane and logical person can possibly think the bar is in any way at fault on this. Man, irresponsible litigious people just piss me off.

    in a more serious attempt to answer the question, I'm going to guess that it's because Cedeno has joined the team, and he's the best-fielding SS, so Fontenot has been shifted to 2B and Patterson to LF. I'd prefer to see Fontenot into the OF so Patterson can continue to work on his defense, but whatever. They're the ones that haven't won a World Series for 100 years, so I'll trust they know what they're doing. Thanks, it didn't make much sense to me when I saw it. Has Fontenot pretty much been determined to not be a viable SS option at the ML level? Would he and Theriot up the middle in either order be that bad if they both hit well? I'm with you Truffle, the lack of direction and potential knee jerk reactions it looks like may be in the works really bother me.

    When was the last time the Cubs had 3 lefties in the rotation? For a long time they didn't have any. Didn't they have like a 4-5 year stretch without any wins from a lefty starter?

    Are we sure Dempster is still closing? Did we ever get a definitive answer on that? Sounds to me like he is mentoring Guz for the position in the future and will keep the job for now. What Demp's future is after Guz takes over is anybody's guess. That's kinda the way it sounds to me anyway.
