  1. i don't think it's a mass exodus to soccer, but there's been plenty of kids playing that than other sports. why do you think there's not many prototypical leadoff hitters around anymore? too much emphasis on hitting home runs will get you the big paycheck? perhaps kids in high school, college and in the minors think its better than emulate the adrian beltre's and richie sexton's of baseball than it is to emulate rickey henderson.
  2. That is what I meant. Small fast athletes, what Dusty considers to be prototypical leadoff men, aren't abandoning the sport en masse to another sport. maybe some to soccer, actually when i mentioned soccer, i was being serious. the news has been reporting for some time that younger kids are more interested in soccer leagues than they are pee-wee baseball and football. when those kids grow up, they tend to stay with the sports they were interested as kids. it seems that the juan pierre/david eckstein type of players are going by the wayside. you tend to see players of their height and athletic build in other sports.
  3. bat poop? explain.
  4. soccer. :)
  5. i just found out that time warner carries the extra innings package. i am one happy dude right now! 8)
  6. money...the pride he has for his country...it's a toss-up for some people. he probably doesn't want to lose face if the dominican republic is defeated in the WBC.
  7. carl everett doesn't believe in the existance of private investigators.
  8. if we're talking about pitching busts of our generation, wouldn't todd van poppel or bill pulsipher (sp?) or first round picks who turned into journeymen be on that short list? i really wouldn't put wood in that category...
  9. how is their stadium? i'm planning on heading to pittsburgh for a game this season.
  10. two words: alec baldwin.
  11. i wish time warner in NYC had WGN... :(
  12. yeah, garvey's known to be a fake. they didn't call him "the politician" for nothing when he was playing. i don't know who would win in a phony contest, him or gary carter.
  13. sandberg hit .400 in the '89 NLCS. grace put on a one-man show. dawson was the one who didn't show up...he hit something like .157 or something horrid like that. i'll always remember that series...i was in 2nd grade and couldn't believe the cubs were playing baseball on my birthday. it was game 5 and they were eliminated. i was very sad and proceeded to play with my plastic baseball game that i received as a birthday present. freakin' will clark! *shakes fist*
  14. go to cubs.com and look at the 5th news headline on the front page (where you can pick between 1-6). you have to REGISTER with cubs.com to purchase tickets on the 24th?! what's this all about?
  15. i took a half day off work last year just to purchase tickets. i waited in the VWR with like 40 windows open from 10 am-12:30 pm. right before i left for work, i got through and picked up 6 tickets to opening day (aka the "latroy and leicester blowing it in the 9th" game). later on that day, i got 6 box seats a cubs/pirates game in late april/early may (it was rained out). you should be able to get good seats. i had no problem doing so.
  16. didn't walton blow out his hamstring one year? i remember him not being the same player after that. smith had a few decent seasons with cubs and got a ring with the '95 braves.
  17. wait a sec, here...are these the same boston fans who booed him while he was a yankee and held up "(B)etrayal" signs when he came back to fenway as a blue jay? i don't know if i buy that, dude.
  18. does anyone else find it hilarious that the red sox would send a player a DVD with footage of fans asking the player to play for boston? the hell has negotiating come to? can you imagine the cubs front office trying to sway a player to come to chicago by giving him a DVD with fans pleading for said player to come to the cubs? the newspapers would have a field day with the story. next thing you know, they'll re-enact a simpsons episode... Jim Hendry: [whining] C'mon, join the Cubs! MLB Player: No. Hendry: I'll be your friend? MLB Player: No. Hendry: Aw, you're mean!
  19. i cheered for teams with the likes of gary scott, willie banks and scott bullet on them. i will cheer for this one like i do with every cubs team i've watched since my birth. (and hopefully make it back to chicago to see a game or four).
  20. can the cubs still try to make a deal with those players before the hearings? i would assume so, but i'm not certain.
  21. i will always remember two things from that game: 1. griffey's bright white smile sticking out from the bottom of that pile. 2. the look at mattingly's face. i wanted to cry and i was 13 at the time. and to pour salt on the wound, the yankees won it all a year later...AFTER he retired. mattingly was great...even though he never shaved off those sideburns.
  22. as a matter of fact, pete rock was in chicago over the weekend doing a show. forgot where, though...zentra, perhaps? cl smooth is a nickname i have because of my initials and i'm also a fan of the duo. the song puts a smile on my face everytime i hear it. the sax sample just kills it. p.s. if you ever heard the original sample source from where that sax sample comes from, you will be in awe in how pete rock found a dope sample from such a crappy tune.
  23. maybe i'm putting this in the wrong forum. if it is, please feel free to move it to the forum where it belongs... i moved from illinois to brooklyn in june of '05. i bought the mlb.tv package and the mlbradio service to keep up with the cubs since i'm not in illinois anymore. my question is this...if there's any NYC cub fans on this board, do you know of any good bars/hangouts for cub fans in or around manhattan or brooklyn? it'd be good for me to find a place where i can watch the cubs with my fellow cub fans and not have to answer questions like "so what's the deal with that bartman guy?" from yankee fans. thanks.
  24. and on the subject of the 2003 playoff media, i remember reading jay marrioti's articles throughout september and october. it seemed like every 3 or 4 days, he would change his opinion on the cubs. it just showed how big of a tool he really was...take 4 of 5 over the cardinals? cubs are awesome! starting shawn estes in one of the biggest games of the year? dusty and company are a bunch of idiots. estes throws a shutout over the reds? he's a gamer who's invaluable to the cubs pitching staff. it's like flip a coin with that guy, but that's common knowledge nowadays (and back then).
  25. the "sleep" i got after game 6 was one of the worst sleeps i've ever had in my life. never in my 23 years have i lost sleep over a baseball game until then. the feeling of "only this team..." was thought that fateful day. on the plus side, i was at game 2, which was a day before my 21st birthday. and what an early birthday present it was. the mob outside wrigley after the game was absolutely insane. thousands of people in the streets yelling "go cubs go!" and beer flowing everywhere. and the dude dressed up as the ivy was hilarious and classic at the same time. i miss those times.
