    am i missing something? wells' stats don't really impress me too much. in fact, his career stats almost mirror jacque jones' career stats... wells: .288/.336/.492 jones: .280/.328/.461 granted, jones put up those numbers in roughly two more seasons that wells has, but i really don't see the reason why the cubs should trade for him. do we really want someone like wells in CF that is basically jacque jones with a better arm and (most likely) 3X the salary of jones? we need to upgrade our offense when it comes to CF, but this doesn't seem like a good choice. if someone is able to prove me wrong, i'm all ears. i'm curious to see why others think this is a good choice...

    i think i speak for most when i say we're concerned with whatever hendry decides to pull out of his bag of tricks this offseason. there are some really good free agents available and if the cubs brass holds true to increasing the payroll, there could be some GREAT players acquired to help this team get back into the playoffs and, ultimately, a world series victory. BUT with the past few seasons, instead of signing impact players, hendry has gone for stop-gags like pierre, jones, mabry and wasting money by giving journeymen infielders and pitchers bloated contracts with too many years attached to them. we hope he gets the impact players and not the stop-gags.

    the last two seasons, hendry's deals have done more harm than good. it's ok to remember that he traded choi for derrek lee and a bunch of horsecrap for lofton and ramirez, but more recently, the negatives have outweighed the positives by a good margin: * multi-year deals for glendon rusch and neifi perez, who were WAIVED by terrible teams before they were picked off the scrap heap by the cubs. think about that for a minute. * trading three young arms for a one-year rental in juan pierre, who is about as one-dimensional as they get. * practically getting into a bidding war with the ROYALS for the services of jacque jones and signing him to a terrible 3-year deal while they were better options available. * giving freddy bynum, phil nevin, john mabry and a cast of thousands time in left field instead of playing matt murton. * bringing up tony womack to play on a major league roster. * wasting bench space, fabric for a jersey and oxygen in the locker room on jose macias. shall i go on?

    the 1993 mets had a $40 million payroll, which 3th or 4th highest in the NL at the time. they lost 59 games are were the laughingstock of baseball. remember the "hardball is back!" title they gave to themselves? yeah. here's a snippet from a wikipedia article to break it down for you: not quite the '06 cubs, but poor planning with a decent payroll has happened before.

    i feel you. i turned the game off with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter after the cardinals apparantly ran back an interception for a touchdown, which made it 29-10. i wake up, see an email in my inbox telling me HOW DID THE BEARS PULL IT OUT OF THEIR BUTT (butt was not used, btw) and proceeded to give myself the bitter beer face and ran to espn.com to check the scores. i felt like crying...did the 2001 bears regular season not teach me a thing?! as god as my witness...never again will i turn off a bears game early. NEVER!

    i hope Piniella brings us a championship. with that said, hendry now can get back to working out aram's extension. hopefully aramis likes Piniella. i really don't want to see him with another team next season.

    Tickets are not sold based on managerial hires. At the risk of sounding snooty, I'll say the average ticketbuyer is somewhat less sophisticated than the average NSBB poster. in defense of the average ticketbuyer, how many people do you know of that buy tickets to ANY sporting event just to see the manager/coach? i can't think of anyone i know, sports nut or otherwise.

    this is about 12 blocks from where i work. i can see the smoke from our 4th floor window. supposedly the plane hit either the 10th, 20th or 30th floor of the building. either way, hope there were as few casualties as possible.

    i don't know about other fans of the game, but i sure as hell do not drop $$$ on baseball tickets to see a manager. i go to see good baseball, my favorite players and (perhaps) a cubs win...i don't go to the ballpark to check out joe torre or dusty baker sitting in the dugout with their poker face on and wait for them to make a pitching change.

    I'm not sure Dusty will be there. good point. if i were dusty, i would at least show my face and try to explain myself on what the hell happened these last few years and perhaps try to sell himself for a new managerial job (wherever that may be).

    what's the over/under on dusty saying "dude" and bringing up neifi and his "horses?"

    if neifi were to be traded to the tigers and somehow win a world series, that would leave a REALLY, REALLY, REALLY bitter taste in my mouth. yes, neifi is horrible, but for him to leave the cubs (who are horrific) and go to a contender like the tigers and possibly go to the world series...wow. :shock: of all players, too...couldn't the royals be of interest? or the devil rays? :cry:

    i remember herzog was on the dan patrick show a few years ago promoting his book. patrick was trying to get him to answer a few questions about the book and herzog was being very stubborn about the whole thing. after a few questions, herzog starts yelling at patrick and hangs up the phone on him. dude is senile.

    hey aramis fan, nice job with the video. i liked the way you synched up the wgn radio broadcast feed with the cubs/rockies game. being a major in sound, i think you did very well. :) is there a way you could make another copy with just the announcers voices in it? i dig the "go cubs go" song, but the announcers calls give the video a little more energy if you know what i mean. i was at three of those games in the video...the cubs/reds 11-10 game (sosa and alou back to back home runs), the cubs/a's game (walker's superman slide into home for the winning run) and the aforementioned cubs/rockies game. i got goosebumps watching this...i miss winning cubs baseball. :( and on a side note, i unfortunately do not have the farnsworth/wilson fight on tape or on my computer. what i can do, though, is sometime this week, i could encode game #163 from '98 to my computer and send it to someone who is interested in it (or at least the ending and celebration). let me know and i'll see what i can do.

    if i recall correctly, the bullpen as a whole fell apart. tapani had a bad second half, as well...i believe he started the season 8-1 and ended the season under .500 and retired. the cubs also had a rotating cf platoon of roosevelt brown and corey patterson at the time. mcgriff was playing 1st base and not producing enough offense as we all hoped he would. sammy was being sammy, too. i think the rbi differential between sammy and ricky guttierrez was something like 90-100 rbis...and ricky was second on the team in rbi's, too! they lost 8 in a row during may/june, then proceeded to win 12 straight right after the losing streak. man, that was an enjoyable year of baseball, although the ending wasn't what we wanted it to be.

    i have the segment in an .mp4 format (viewable in quicktime, itunes and your video ipod). i can send it to your email address if you want. if you have gmail, that would be better since it can handle large attachments (i believe the file is 25-35 MB). let me know...i'll be more than happy to send it to anyone who wants it. EDIT: what i'll do is this...when i get home tonight, i'll upload it to my girlfriend's website and post the link here for anyone who wants it. i'll keep it there for a week so it gives everyone who wants it enough time to download it. sound good? p.s. one of these days, i'll get around to converting maddux's 300th win, the 2003 nl central clincher, game 163 from '98 and the '84 nl east clincher to .mp4 for everyone. p.p.s. did anyone ever find out where one could purchase the sandberg game?

    thom brennaman is about as "anti-cubs" as you can get. if zambrano figured out the cure for aids during the rain delay, brennaman would've talked it down like it was no big deal. i think he's still irked that he didn't stick around too long on WGN. anyone know the details behind him leaving?

    i don't think maddux is traded by the deadline. with all due respect to maddux, i just don't see how a team in the pennant race could trade ANYTHING for a guy who is 40 years old, an era either above or close to 5 and has a 7-10 record. how much is he owed for the rest of the year? 3-4 million? i dunno...i don't see it happening.

    i believe that game was in pittsburgh and wasn't that a 1-0 or 2-1 game? i remember it being VERY close.

    murton marshall cedeno (he'll get better with time...and hopefully he'll learn some patience at the plate) z maddux (always a professional) barrett lee ramirez eyre howry dempster wood (for all his injuries, all he wants to do is pitch and help the cubs win...i can't fault him for that) all the young players walker got on my last nerve with throwing ronny under the bus the other day.
