  1. Kind of boring first halves for both games, as France is pretty disinterested, Tunisia can't generate any chances anyway, and Australia for the moment is perfectly fine parking the bus. I kind of hope Tunisia gets a goal, because that would make the Denmark-Australia game fascinating, both knowing that a draw would eliminate both of them.
  2. Group C and D scenarios: Group C: - Poland is through with a win or draw vs Argentina, or a loss vs Argentina coupled with a Mexico-Saudi draw or Mexico wins by fewer than 4 goals. - Argentina is through with a win vs Poland or a draw vs Poland and a Mexico-Saudi draw or Mexico wins by fewer than 3 goals. - Saudi Arabia is through with a win vs Mexico, or a draw and a Poland win vs Argentina - Mexico is through with a win vs Saudi Arabia and either an Argentina loss or they make up 3-4 goals of differential on Poland with a Poland loss or Argentina with an Argentina-Poland draw Group D: - France is already through and has already won the group unless they lose, Australia wins and makes up a 6 goal differential. France has won the group. - Australia is through with a win vs Denmark or draw vs Denmark and France win or draw vs Tunisia - Denmark is through with a win vs Australia as long as either Tunisia doesn't win or Tunisia wins by fewer goals. - Tunisia is through with a win vs France and a Denmark-Australia draw or Denmark wins by fewer goals
  3. CP was waiting for the team when they got back to the hotel tonight: [tweet] [/tweet]
  4. Poland draw/Saudi win, Saudi-Australia knockout.
  5. Standouts today were CCV, Adams, Pulisic and Dest. Weah missing that final touch. Jedi had a bit of a heavy first touch, got into a lot of space. Musah a bit too much dribbling again, had a few through balls available and was just late on them. Sargent was better this game, rough injury there at the end, couldn't get a finish. McKennie seemed tired today. Ream was solid again, Turner was fine. Subs were...a step down in each sense aside from Zimmerman helping to park the bus. Aaronson was kind of on an island the last 30 minutes so hard to blame him too much. Acosta didn't provide a lot aside from a set of fresh legs, Wright generated nothing, Moore kept giving the ball away, preventing the US from really having any kind of possession after Dest subbed out.
  6. This would be like if UM/OSU was the national championship game for you, with Michigan trying to hold a 4 point lead with 5 minutes left and OSU just keeps getting first downs.
  7. Netherlands is no slouch, but they're about the 10th best European team in the field, so there aren't many more desirable options coming into the knockout round (unless Argentina somehow blows it).
  8. Shoutout to CCV, who was huge this game (literally, he was like twice the size of any Iranian player, anyone that went against him just bumped off).
  9. The Haji and Shaq subs did not help.
  10. GFY Iran, nothing but diving in the box the last 10 minutes.
  11. Moore for Dest, which is...nervy.
  12. I don't think so, since Iran already took 4 sub windows.
  13. Give me Gio for Musah and Ferreira for Sargent.
  14. Aaronson for Pulisic to start the 2nd half.
  15. I would prefer they keep up with the pressure and the "no shots at all for Iran" plan.
  16. I was thinking Adam Banks from Mighty Ducks.
  17. Incredible. Three, really.
  18. Sure, but then how would you like their chances against the Saudi Arabia-Australia winner in the quarters?
  19. We're now through two cycles, and only France, Brazil and Portugal are through for sure, and only Qatar and Canada are eliminated (the only two teams that lost twice). Advancement scenarios for tomorrow: Group A: - Netherlands it through with a win or draw vs Qatar, or Ecuador win or draw vs Senegal. - Ecuador is through with a win or draw vs Senegal. - Senegal is through with a win vs Ecuador Group B: - England is through with a win, draw, or loss by fewer than 4 goals against Wales. - Iran is through with a win vs USA or a draw and England win or draw against Wales - USA is through with a win vs Iran - Wales is through with a win over England by at least 4 goals, or a win vs England and a USA-Iran draw
  20. Same. [tweet] [/tweet]
  21. Purdue up to 5th, a 19 spot rise. UNC down to 18th. ESPN announced yesterday the B1G-ACC challenge is ending after this year (ESPN is losing the rights to broadcast he B1G which I am sure is a coincidence). Starting next season, there will be an SEC-ACC challenge, which I suppose makes more sense regionally. As for this year's B1G-ACC challenge, the matchups for this season favor the B1G by a 10-4 margin (as the KenPom rates): 1. #122 Georgia Tech at #23 Iowa (Iowa, 91%) 2. #7 Purdue at #164 Florida State (Purdue 89%) 3. #121 Pittsburgh at #46 Northwestern (Northwestern 82%) 4. #24 Maryland at #171 Louisville (Maryland 82%) 5. #70 Syracuse at #22 Illinois (Illinois 81%) 6. #76 Wake Forest at #40 Wisconsin (Wisconsin 73%) 7. #21 North Carolina at #11 Indiana (Indiana 70%) 8. #107 Boston College at #111 Nebraska (Nebraska 61%) 9. #29 Michigan State at #78 Notre Dame (Michigan State 58%) 10. #33 Penn State at #66 Clemson (Penn State 50.3%) 11. #36 Rutgers at #44 Miami (Miami 58%) 12. #19 Ohio State at #20 Duke (Duke 61%) 13. #5 Virginia at #53 Michigan (Virginia 67%) 14. #154 Minnesota at #35 Virginia Tech (Virginia Tech 87%)
  22. Are women allowed to watch their broadcasts, or is that only with express written permission of the father or husband?
  23. Also, fun scheduling quirk, Illinois doesn't play Purdue until March 5. IU and Illinois have been the preseason favorites, but Purdue's week at least puts them into the conversation for now (like MSU's week last week did and this week subsequently took them out of).
  24. I mean, he didn't bring the Colts defense with him. They stayed in Indianapolis. As for the Bears' current defense, it's down their best two players from the start of the season and by the end of today was playing with 1 legitimate defensive starter that they can use going forward and a couple of rookie projects.
  25. Who do you put above them? UNC definitely no, Kansas lost, Duke and Gonzaga lost to Purdue, Creighton and Arkansas lost, MSU lost, Kentucky and UCLA have 2 losses already, Illinois, Baylor and Indiana didn't play anybody of import this week. That leaves Houston (maybe defacto #1), Texas, Virginia, Arizona and UConn, with outside shots for Indiana, Baylor, Illinois and Tennessee staying ahead of Purdue (though I doubt Illinois gets quite that high). Looking at efficiency-based metrics, KenPom still has a preseason component affecting rankings (to avoid early season ratings being too volatile to be reliable), and Purdue is at 9 there, behind Texas, Houston, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Gonzaga, Baylor, and Connecticut. I feel like that's kinda close, except I think Kentucky are a bit buoyed by preseason factors right now. Sagarin's ratings are purely based on in season performance, so it's more volatile, and are only updated once a day (so today's results aren't factored in yet) and here is that top 10 coming into today: 1. Houston 2. Texas 3. Connecticut 4. Purdue 5. Indiana 6. Gonzaga 7. Baylor 8. Tennessee 9. Arizona 10. Illinois That looks pretty good in terms of actual accomplishment, missing a bit on maybe Virginia (they're 11th, they didn't rout all their buy games so far, like I said, there's only 5 games worth of data here so far so each game provides volatility).
