    Those hits were bound to come in the same inning eventually. This is officially the largest Cub lead of the season.

    I'm not familiar with SRS. "Simple Rating System" - Basically weights all games equally, all runs equally (ignored wins and losses, only run production and allowance), slightly biased towards good offensive teams (because it considers run differential, not run ratio), and the numbers it spits out are directly correlative to runs. So a Milwaukee team that rates SRS 1.4 would be expected to be 1.5 runs better per game than a Cubs team that rates -0.1.

    I tend to agree with that. I'd argue ESPN has played a major role in college basketball's popularity as well. How many games a week would they air back in the early 90s? (Legit question, I have no idea) Back in the early 90's, when ESPN was just ESPN, they'd air around 200 games a year. Mostly on Saturdays. CBS would air a Saturday game a week, and then they'd get the NCAA tournament.

    NBA popularity definitely peaked in the Jordan era, but I think it topped out in 1998. Since then it fell like a rock until 2007/2008, and it's only just now starting to come back to respectable levels. NCAA popularity, though, I think has peaked much more recently, especially since now everyone can fill out an online bracket for the tournament.

    I mean, I hate to say it, but at this point, the reason the Cubs are 1-5 instead of 3-3 is a couple consecutive bad outings by Marmol and Wood, the two relievers I'm the least concerned about going forward, along with a bad inning by the 5th starter. That combined with the offense not being able to make up for the mistakes cost the Cubs a couple wins. So, to me, this is an unfortunate blip that wasted some spectacular starting performances.

    The Cubs offense to this point: 19 runs scored, 9th in the NL .220 BA, also 9th in the NL .297 OBP, also 9th in the NL .622 OPS, 11th in the NL Offense all around the league is putrid right now. The Cubs pitching to this point: 28 runs allowed, 15th in the NL 4.80 ERA, 15th in the NL 3.73 starters ERA, 8th in the NL 3.40 starters xFIP, 8th in the NL 0.96 starters WHIP, 2nd in the NL 7.24 relievers ERA, 16th in the NL 6.54 relievers xFIP, 16th in the NL 2.05 relievers WHIP, 16th in the NL The relief pitching hasn't been good. And Maholm for an inning. Is it worth fixing? At this point, it might just fix itself if Marmol and Wood can be as good as projected. Camp and Castillo don't have high expectations, and that was pretty well known coming into the year.

    Are you just purposely not getting the difference between running the bases while he's pitching and throwing him out there regularly when he isn't? It's needless risk at a pointless time in the season.

    It's not luck that this offense is awful. Sadly, the offense compared to the rest of baseball has been middle-of-the-road. It's largely luck that the Cubs have held leads in 5 of 6 games (past the 6th inning in 4 of 6 games) this year, and haven't been able to hold on but once. Heck, look at the standings last year after a week, and 5 of the 8 playoff teams looked awful.

    This sucks, mostly because the first few weeks of the season are generally throwaway weeks while teams figure out what works and what needs to be changed around. So luck, for better or worse, plays a big hand in the early results. And so far lady luck has not been kind to the Cubs.

    The Cubs' starter ERA (entering today) was 3.73, good for 15th in MLB. KC leads the majors at 1.55. I guess that makes sense, I didn't realize how poorly all the offenses were performing so far. The Cubs staff has had two disastrous 5-run innings to this point. Just those two innings are more runs than the Pirates' staff has given up all year.

    So, right after I posted that the Cubs' offense needs to be more patient and draw walks, Castro and Soriano drew walks... So, really, what the Cubs' offense is lacking is a little power...

    It is a Wednesday afternoon in April. And not a particularly warm one. Did anyone catch the official attendance? Last year, Wednesday day games in April drew 32k and 36k Last year, the average meathead was still optimistic in April.

    Cubs sporting a .622 OPS through nearly 6 games....still somehow good for 20th in the league and better than Cincinnati, Philly, San Diego, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh.

    I most certainly am a quality over quantity guy. The top of our lineup being up should be exciting, but it's not. Our entire lineup is just one, undifferentiated mass of bad. DeJesus has been about as expected. Castro is struggling a bit early on, and who knows what Soriano is capable of at this point? I hate to say it, but the Cubs would probably be best served tossing LaHair in at cleanup and playing him every day.

    Wood strikes out the side in the 8th. Silver linings. Hard to blame the majority of the pitching to this point this year. We knew the offense would struggle to hit for power, and it has. Mostly, the Cubs need to work the count a little more and try to draw a few more free passes. DeJesus, Baker and LaHair actually leading the way in that department.

    Wood tried to get Ramirez to chase a curve low and away. Not always a bad option.

    There are so many things wrong with this post, I don't know where to start. I know it's an overreaction, it's 6 games into the season that I knew was going to be horrible, and I'm already losing it Oh, Byrd being garbage was probably the most right thing. However... 1) His stock is currently very low, there's nowhere for it to go. 2) Jared Sullinger is a top 10 draft prospect for the NBA, and some mocks have him going as high as 6th. That's not plummeting. 3) Campana isn't on the roster, he'd need to be called up. 4) Jackson has things to work on in AAA and there's no reason to start the arby clock, so he won't be called up, despite what WSR constantly believes.
