  1. Another head-high splitter for Dempster. Nearing 90 pitches in the 7th.
  2. Two more K's in the 6th for Strasburg. 70 pitches through 6 for Strasburg, 80 through 6 for Dempster.
  3. It hasn't worked. They did nothing until the inning they scored. And in that inning Baker took several pitches and drew a walk to move Stewart into scoring position. All of their hits have been on fastballs in the zone early in the count, so in that sense it's worked better than the alternative.
  4. If a splitter is head high, is it still a splitter?
  5. 87 MPH meatball to Zimmerman, and he flies out to the wall in left. Zimmerman now hates the wind at Wrigley.
  6. He looks like a pitcher for the Nationals. The Cubs have been swinging at early fastballs in the zone to avoid getting behind in the count, and it's actually been working decently. Until this past inning, when Dempster and DeJesus struck out.
  7. Dempster batting so the back thing isn't a big deal/Sveum doesn't care.
  8. 71 through 5 for Demp. EDIT: And he doesn't have to be concerned about any of that no-hitter business since the leadoff guy singled.
  9. It's like half the balls he hits are hard outs.
  10. Yep, the ump still has a crazy tight strike zone.
  11. Strasburg's pitching strategy to Soriano needs a slight improvement. It appears that Soriano is able to hit fastballs down the middle with regularity today.
  12. Ryan Dempster decides that there may be something to this FIP nonsense.
  13. It'll be tough for the Cubs offense today without their best hitter in the lineup.
  14. He's responsible for half of the Cubs offense this year. It's not irrational. :P
  15. MLB Gameday Scout is hilarious right now, with the really small sample sizes.
  16. Dempster trying to take advantage of this "tight zone" business.
  17. Pitch F/X had ball 1 to Werth practically down the middle.
  18. Adam LaRoche will have none of this "tight zone" business.
  19. Ball 4 was a good pitch too. Zone is really tight right now, apparently.
  20. Ball 2 to Zimmerman looked like a good pitch.
  21. Dempster wants no part of Espinoza, apparently.
  22. Not a good idea to do that during National Small Sample Overreaction Week, Ian.
  23. First time Strasburg throws something other than a fastball, and Byrd is the first Cub to swing and miss a pitch for a strikeout.
  24. Can't really complain about patience when he does that. Yes you can, patience isn't just about taking balls. It's about running up the opposing pitchers' pitch count. Getting yourself out in a hurry against a guy who had TJS not too long ago and is probably going to be monitored for workloads just isn't a great idea. Patience is also about hitting the hittable pitches, and the Cubs did that. It makes no sense to watch a hittable fastball go by for a strike just in the name of taking pitches.
