  1. You don't think the Cubs can win next year? The bad players can and will be easily cut loose (Perez, Macias, Patterson, Burnitz). The injury risks are well worth waiting for (Wood, Prior). I think adding a big OBP in the lineup would be a good way to get this team back into contention. Giles' .420 OBP would replace Burnitz' .330 or whatever. Anything would be an improvement over what the Cubs had in CF, LF, and SS for most of the season this year.
  2. Really? Is it because of Giles' perceived reluctance to leave the west coast? That's the only thing I can see holding the Cubs back. Well, that and I'm sure they won't overpay like many of us here have suggested.
  3. Now that Burrell has bounced back, I think Philly builds around him, Utley, and Howard. I think they get ripped off in a Thome and/or Abreu deal before they deal Pat the Bat. Last year would have been the time to go after him.
  4. I don't think preference is the right word. I think everyone would "prefer" Abreu. Whether it's the most efficient move or not would be the question. Michaels would be insanely cheap to get (cost and prospects wise) and Giles is available for RF without having to give up players you would have to give to net Abreu. If both were FA's, I'd prefer Abreu to Giles.
  5. I'm a little late, but the point is this: Moving Guzman to the bullpen would be the Cubs just trying to salvage something out of him.* The Cubs want to do more than that. They want the pitcher with the immense potential to fulfill it for them, which is that of a top of the rotation type starter. If you want to get that full potential, you gotta give him a chance to reach it. It's a high risk/high reward proposition. If there's any glimmer of hope that he can still become a top flight starter (which I and the Cubs believe there is), then you go for it, even at the risk of having him never being able to help the Cubs major league team in any way. This way is very justified. The Cubs didn't invest a top draft choice on Angel. They aren't throwing millions of dollars at him. If he never makes it, no big loss in the grand scheme of things. *Admittedly, he could make a pretty good career out of being a relief pitcher, but I don't think it's gonna happen. As Ron said, the great relievers are failed starters......Guzman hasn't failed, he's been injured.
  6. Why should "nsbb" be enthused? It's not the fact that his fastball is mostly in the upper 80s now. It's the fact that it once was a plus mid-90s fastball. That coupled with the fact that he's had arm troubles. That coupled with the fact that he had some maturity issues early on. That coupled with the fact he had already had over 70 innings in the Southern League prior to this year. I understand that getting thru the year for him was great, but that doesn't mean he's an elite prospect again (I had him rated 7th in a loaded system after the 2003 season). Shouldn't Brownlie be rated higher then? He's had a similar velocity loss, and about the exact same numbers his first time in AA (at about 7 months older). Granted, he didn't back it up this year, but nobody was still putting him in their top 5 after 04 anyway. I would love for JK to get his velocity back. He had the 2nd best stuff from a Cubs RH (Guzman) in the system. But after missing time and losing velocity, he's clearly behind guys like Nolasco, Gallagher, and Marmol.
  7. The Cubs have something in their hand but it's not a bird, and it most definitely is broke. I would not consider a trade of the studs if this team was coming off back to back 90+ win seasons, but this team sucks. Anything to improve them should be done. Would you trade ARam for Wilkerson and Hernandez and re-sign Nomar to play 3rd? I wouldn't. As much as I like Wilkerson, he's a huge downgrade from ARam. Nomar's still as likely to get hurt. And there are only handful of pitchers I would trade Ram for......Livan ain't one of them. Would you (or anyone) trade Zambrano for Miguel Cabrera. Probably. It would hurt like hell to do, but Miggy's a top notch bat, who's gonna be cheap for a little while longer. Starting pitching is harder to find than a corner OF (although Miggy could play 3B or even SS), but Cabrera's gonna be an elite player for about 10-12 years easily.
  8. Please and thank you. Trade for Bradley too and we're top notch offensively. CF Bradley 2B Giles 1B Lee RF Giles 3B Ramirez C Barrett LF Murton SS Cedeno/Nomar? Pretty solid defensively too.

I'll take Ortiz off your hands if you want.
  11. Not surprising, but Giles was also fourth in the leage in runs created. Giles + Lee + Ramirez = Lot o' runs. Certainly more runs than Burnitz+Lee+Ramirez, but I would hold back on using your phrase "lotta runs" until we see who is batting 1 and 2. I have faith that Hendry will get a token proven leadoff hitter whose likely to give a .340 OBP (Furcal, Lofton) to leadoff. That player combined with Murton/Walker/Barrett or whomever hits 2nd is what I am assuming would happen. Of course, I think Giles is a longshot at best.
  12. I'm with you on that RP. Guzman can flat out deal. I too am encouraged by the weight/muscle gain. The stamina will come if he stays on the field. The muscle should help him stay on the field. If he is on the ML roster next year, the Cubs will be a much better team for it. Angel's that good. FWIW, I thought Guzman was amazing when I saw him for Lansing at 165lbs soaking wet.

Crap! I thought Jason Lane had an exemption left!
  15. Then they are screwed. They have no choice. They must improve the OF. I don't buy that. Have something like Lee, Kent, Furcal and Ramirez in the infield and Murton, Lofton and say Jacque Jones in the outfield, and the offense looks alright. Pitching is what usually wins titles anyways. NO. It looks a lot like last year. If you figure Derrek Lee is gonna come back to Earth, Ramirez is gonna miss time again, Murton may not live up to expectations, and Furcal is a step down from Walker.
  16. I don't really fault the Cubs minor league instructors. I believe the Cubs have pretty decent instruction in the minors. I just feel that the instruction is misguided because of the organizational philosophy. The organization as a whole hasn't shown a true direction. They have repeatedly given free passes (no pun intended) to the more toolsy players, while players who put up numbers are never given a chance.
  17. He's also been rumored to be after Preston Wilson.......just saying.
  18. I would sleep on it if I still pissed the bed.
  19. I'm beginning to think that that is what is going to happen too. Damon will go to the Yankees or Angels. Beltran will become Boston's CF. Cliff Floyd coming here. So you're ok with a Murton, Wilkerson and Floyd OF? That would be an improvement over what we had this year. Murton > Hollandsworth/Lawton/Dubois/Hairston Wilkerson > Patterson/Hairston/Macias Floyd > Burnitz Would it be enough? That would depend on how well our infield produces. As Raw said it would be ugly on D. Furcal Wilkerson Lee Floyd ARam Murton Barrett Cedeno Insert Manny for Floyd if he is the one aquired. Interesting lineup. Very interesting. The popular phrase goes, "speed doesn't slump", but OBP doesn't slump. While that lineup is far from juggernaut status, it doesn't have 3 dead spots and it features a group of hitters, who will get you more than 2 runs on a more consistent basis.
  20. Not to nitpick, but according to your chart, he started 24 games in 02. Your point still stands though. Yet, I disagree. I'd give him next year to try to be a starter. He's still very young, and according to those who have seen him, his stuff has not suffered despite the injuries. The chart is hard to read, but according to this link: http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/390805 The most games appeared in is 16, and the most starts was 15. Peep the Bold. 2 teams, 1 season.
  21. I'm beginning to think that that is what is going to happen too. Damon will go to the Yankees or Angels. Beltran will become Boston's CF. Cliff Floyd coming here. So you're ok with a Murton, Wilkerson and Floyd OF? Offensively, I would be ok with it. Defensively, it would be ugly. But that would be 2 guys with career OBPs in the .360s, and Murton has shown every sign that he will be in the neighborhood. So, 3 guys getting on base 36% of the time added to Lee (.390 ish), Ramirez is a solid start to a more consistent offense.
  22. Against draft picks, and other rehabbing players, though. Actually this outing was in the AFL a couple of days ago. And who plays in the Arizona Fall League is my point. Angel Guzman has never pitched a full season at any level. Ever. Ever. Why on earth the Cubs insist on keeping him as a starter when he clearly cannot stay healthy is beyond me. It's going to take more than what's basically a sim game in AZ to convince me that Guzman can be counted on to give the 2006 Cubs anything. The AFL is a who's who for baseball prospects. There is a ton of talent in that league.
  23. I didn't say that. I'm still a big believer in his potential. It depends on if you think Richie Sexson is a star. Dope is at best gonna be a less athletic Sexson. Sexson's a former All-Star and a very good player, but I don't think of him as a superstar.
  24. Man, this could be a fun offseason. Could see Beltran, Manny, Abreu, Delgado, and Soriano all changing teams.
  25. Offer me a trade.
