  1. Greene is probably the best defensive SS out there, but he doesn't deserve it this year. Greene is next to last in fielding %. He has 5 more errors than Neifi in 50 fewer innings. He has 6 more errors than Vizquel in 250 fewer innings. And I'm not saying Neifi is the best defensive SS in the league. I think Greene, Furcal, Wilson, and Gonzalez are better.
  2. First, Casey is signed thru 06. Second, the problem with that strategy is that while they'd probably like to get Griffey and Casey off the payroll, Dunn is the guy that is worth the most and can get them the most in a trade. If they trade Casey the most they're gonna get is a mediocre arm and an average prospect. If they trade Dunn, they have the potential to get 2 or 3 future difference makers. They would miss Dunn's production, but they would have a couple of high potential arms and could go out and sign a middle of the pack OF (or a 2B and move Freel to the OF fulltime), who could see a numbers boost at GABP.
  3. Yeah, I said it! I pointed this out in the gamethread, but I've done more research. -2nd in NL in fielding % from SS. Only behind Vizquel, who he beats in range, thus having many more chances per game. -Leads the NL in Zone Rating (tied with Jack Wilson), which means he's the most reliable fielder of the bunch. -Turns the 2nd best doubleplay in the league behind Alex Gonzalez, who's 4th from the bottom in fielding %. And I think you gotta take into consideration that he was supposed to be a bench player, and that he has been the only one of the group that has played 2B and a little 3B. The only competition Neifi should have for the award is Jack Wilson, Omar Vizquel, and possibly Rafael Furcal. Wilson won't win because he's playing in obscurity. Omar has a shot based on reputation. Furcal has a shot based on having the best range, arm, and team. That being said, the NL Gold Glove for SS will go to none other than......David Eckstein. :pukel:
  4. And the Cubs would be regretting it. As much as I like Giles, Bay is in his mid-20s and is one of the top 10 hitters in baseball. If Helton wasn't playing his home games in Coors, if Derrek Lee comes back to Earth, and if you take away the lineup protection that the rest of the top 10 players not named Pujols enjoy from hitting back-to-back with each other (ARod/Giambi, Manny/Ortiz, Delgado/Cabrera (although Cabrera is 14th).....Bay is easily top 3-5.
  5. Huff would be a last ditch effort for me, if the Cubs couldn't land anyone else. I'd have Giles on my list first, followed by several potential trade targets, including Wilkerson and Floyd. If the Cubs get Huff, SS and CF better be manned by more productive bats than they were this year (Nomar healthy would be more productive).
  6. The little I've seen of Taveras has been very good in CF. I'll even go on record and say......um......um....Neifi Perez has been the best defensive SS in the NL (apologies to Vizquel, but Neifi has slightly more range at this point).
  7. Raw, Why can't he just say something demonstrative like: "I haven't got my final number, but our payroll should be sufficient enough to field a team that will be battling to be the best in the NL." Isn't "battling to be the best in the NL" a synonym for "very competitive"? Is it? Okay, then come up with something better. My point is "very competitive" is setting the bar short (even if it's just perception). We want our GM to say, we must do everything we can with the resources we have to be the best team in the NL." Those are the words I want to hear: "best team" as opposed to BS like "very competitive." I fully agree, but I'm not gonna get on him for it. It's just his choice of words. Being competitive is nice, and all. But if you lose 160 games by 1-run in the late innings, you are very competitive, but you're still losing. I'd rather him say, "we have enough payroll to win a lot of ballgames". But that's just Hendry's way. That's the way he's always spoken to the press.
  8. Raw, Why can't he just say something demonstrative like: "I haven't got my final number, but our payroll should be sufficient enough to field a team that will be battling to be the best in the NL." I don't think he wants to put that much pressure on himself and the team. That quote would be about the equivalent of him guaranteeing a playoff berth. Hendry would be roasted if the team underperformed again and fell short.
  9. Pie would be better off playing a full year of baseball (everyday) in AA/AAA. He only played 2/3 of a season this year. I love pie (insert your favorite Homer Simpson joke here), but considering he IS coming off injury, I rather him spend atleast half the season in AAA, if NOT all at AAA. He is ONLY 20 yrs old, and one full season at AAA wouldn't hurt him. I wouldn't mind if Adam Greenberg is given another shot at CF/leadoff provided his head is on straight. I think at least short-term, Greenberg's grit could help the Cubs. I agree. As for Greenburg, at least see what he can do coming out of ST. I would flip if Dusty's opening day line up looked like this (not necessarily saying it would be a good one) Greenburg CF Walker 2nd Lee Aramais Giles RF Murton LF Barrett Cedeno SS I'd hate to see all that OBP that low. Giles needs at least 1 of the big bats to knock him in since he is likely to have the highest OBP. Murton is likely to get on base more than Greenberg, so I'd rather hit him 1st if those are the options.
  10. Why would LA want Walker when they have Jeff Kent? LA will put Kent wherever they have an opening. 2B, 1B, or 3B. Wherever they don't get a player, that's where Kent will be.
  11. This is also written by Sullivan, so who knows. So maybe the Cubs might be in the hunt for Burnett. Not thrilled with Morris, and something tells me he might pull a "Steve Kline", so I would stay away from Crybaby Morris. I'm probably in the minority, but I want nothing to do with AJ Burnett. And it has nothing to do with his critical comments of Marlin management. I look at it simply from performance: from Aug. 24 to Sept. 25, he lost all 6 decisions he had, which included a 4 game stretch where he gave up 18 earned runs in 18 innings. I don't want Hendry shelling out big money to a non-big money pitcher. I'd be all over Millwood. In his last 6 starts, he's given up 8 earned runs in his last 40 innings. That's getting it done. A rotation of Zambrano, Prior, Maddux, Wood and Millwood would be amazing with either Jerome Williams or Rich Hill there in case of injury to Wood. I'd gladly take Burnett, but not at the expense of offense. If the Cubs want to get Giles, Manny, re-sign Nomar, Walker, AND get Burnett go for it. But the offense needs to be addressed first. I just hope the Cubs aren't looking at the high team ERA and the high team BA and thinking they need to improve their pitching most.
  12. That's brilliant!
  13. I don't see the Cubs getting Giles and Furcal. Don't see them getting Giles at all, because I want it too bad.
  14. BBB, Regardless of whether Patterson has value or not, I think the cord needs to be cut for the renewal of the team. The Cubs simply must move on. He's been an awful player this year and is a constant reminder of all the missed opportunities. Plus, I get the sense Derrek Lee has become the leader of this team, and I have been told by a close source that Lee has been privately very critical of Corey. Lee may wield some influence with Hendry's decisions especially with his own contract coming up soon. I think Lofton and Hairston can be a decent platoon for short term. Agreed on all points. I'm Corey's biggest fan, but it's over with him as a Cub. I hope he catches on somewhere and becomes a solid player. But this year has been disasterous for him. He's also a constant reminder of the type of player the Cubs should stay away from. He doesn't have a future here, but doesn't give you the guaranteed production that Walker and Nomar do at tougher positions to fill.
  15. I'm scrait ballin'.
  16. What's the point though of bringing him up if he's just gonna go back if/when he struggles? If you are gonna bring him up, he needs to stay and not get yo-yoed. Because, IMO, one call-up and send down doesn't constitute a yo-yo effect. Now, if it happens more than once in a season, then maybe the argument can be made. Murton and Cedeno had some yo-yo effects going on this year. But testing the kid out at the start of the season to see if he is ready, and sending him down until September if he proves to not be ready isn't jerking him around. I see your point, but I don't have faith in the Cubs doing that. It wouldn't be much harm in that, and I do think there's a good shot that he will perform well. But as has been mentioned, why not just play the kids who have earned it (Cedeno, Murton) and let Pie wait a year. Everyone will be better off from it.
  17. What's the point though of bringing him up if he's just gonna go back if/when he struggles? If you are gonna bring him up, he needs to stay and not get yo-yoed.
  18. I want a salary dumped Hinske as the backup 3b/1b to help in the preventive maintenence of those players. Hinske would be interesting. I'm still holding out hope for Branyan though. Don't know his contract situation.
  19. Unless there's an "injury". Fixed it for you. Much better. Thanks
  20. Sure. I'd be willing to deal, how about.. You get: LT I get: Your whole team + a years subscription to NSBB Premium. He is the only thign that kept me from having negative points this week. Sadly, I thought about that for a second.
  21. The reason I am not okay with a Furcal signing is because I know there is no possible way that would be the secondary move. That would be paraded around as the "put us over the top" move, filling leadoff and SS, and the OF would be filled by scraps. Does Preston Wilson count as a secondary move?
  22. I would like that starting lineup. Hairston would be a nice platoon in CF. Cedeno would get about 60 starts between SS and 2B. Blanco's a given. But for one of the other bench spots, I would like either Mark Sweeney or Russell Branyan. Branyan gives you the ability to play 3B along with 1B and corner OF. Both give you HR power and great OBP off the bench.
  23. I think Preston Wilson will be the Cubs CF if the Cubs also get Furcal to play SS and lead-off. By the way, 2 other players, who I wouldn't rule out as Hendry trade possibilities: Dave Roberts of San Diego and Craig Counsell of Arizona. Hoops Yep, I'm picturing a lineup next year of: SS-Furcal 2B-Cedeno 1B-Lee LF-Floyd 3B-Ramirez CF-Wilson C-Barrett RF-Murton Floyd gets LF, because he's the veteran and has played there longer.
