  1. In what role? Will he accept a bullpen role when he could start somewhere else and even possibly get more money?
  2. My sister's boyfriend is in the NFL. I was in the wedding with someone in the NBA. I've met all the IU professional athletes from my era (like all 4 of them). I met Troy Polamalu this summer.
  3. This is superb analysis: "Hawk suffers from the same problem Leinart does; he's so good and playing so flawlessly well, the he's not getting the credit he deserves." whaaaa? Haha that is stupid...ask Leinart how flawless he was in South Bend on Saturday. ND's defense almost made him look human - almost. How is a redshirt freshman from IU ahead of Jeff Samardzija on one man's All-American team? Even the most ardent ND haters fear Jeff. It could be because JAMES HARDY IS THE BEST 2 SPORT ATHLETE IN COLLEGE! *actually Samardiaihfoahgoihgja is a darn good baseball player.
  4. I'm all for getting better OBP, but I'm having a tough time understanding why that is the biggest problem on the team. The Houston Astros scored 9 fewer runs than the Cubs this year, and the White Sox, when the DH is factored in, were no better offensively than the Cubs. Yeah, and the Cardinals and Red Sox blew the Cubs away offensively last year. You can find a team to defend your position if you try hard enough. The point is, over time, great OBP gives you a great chance to score more runs, and scoring more runs is good. The Cubs need pitching to, but they can't go out and sign Clemens and Oswalt. And there's no guarantee that the Sox staff will be nearly as good next year. A small step back next season, and that team will suffer big time if that offense stays lackluster. The Cardinals and the Red Sox also had excellent pitching last year. The numbers this year also indicate that the game is moving away from the steroids induced offensive explosion of the late 90s. I'll take my chances with an outstanding pitching staff and an average offense. Uh, the Red Sox were 25th in ERA this year. And they had a bottom 2 bullpen.
  5. Yep. Offer him a 2-year deal and triple the money the Cubs gave Dempster and Williamson. 2-years, $2M first year, $ 6M option for 2nd year. But as UK, he wouldn't be a priority, as much as I would like him.
  6. If I see Felix, I'll let him know you didn't think he was worth the money. While doing a search, I came across an article about how the Dominican League signed a multi-year deal with ESPN Deportes last year. Courtesy of Google's page translator, I found this pic of Felix Foot: http://www.licey.com/jugadores/felixpie.jpg Showing off his guns. Looks like you can listen to their games live on their website. Anyone wanna give that a shot next time? His arms are literally twice the size they were for Lansing.
  7. They got the to NLCS because the rest of the division was fairly weak. 88 wins doesn't put the Cubs even *close* to winning the division, and the wildcard shouldn't be a goal. If the Cardinals had been as good in 2003 as they have been the last two years, the Cubs would have been watching the playoffs from home that year too... I just said that the Cubs have had a little success with this coaching staff. They aren't losing because of the coaching staff. They are losing because the players are not collectively good enough to win. Go out and sign Giles, greatly improve CF, and keep the infield intact, sure up the pen and the rotation (which they can afford), they'll win again.
  8. Now, I'm looking for pitching.
  9. The TV version of Batman was a homosexual (with Robin).
  10. That's a bit harsh considering the offseason hasn't even started yet, isn't it? The offseason started October 2 after the game. Resigning all the coaches was a decision made in the offseason. That's the only thing that's been done, and it was a terrible move. Who cares? The Cubs can win in spite of the coaching staff if they get better players. They got to the NLCS with this coaching staff. And if they go out and make the moves they should make, they can compete for a title with this coaching staff. Granted, it's still a bad move to keep them, but I see this as Hendry accepting the blame for 05 and giving his guys 1 more year before he tears it all apart. Well, aside from the pretty obvious point that the coaching staff is incompetent (can anybody in this crew help a hitter?), I was making a point that the offseason has indeed started, and the Cubs, as usual aren't off to a good start. I see. But too much is being made of the non-coaching changes. I think the only one really in jeopardy was Rothschild. If you are upset about Baker and his cronies not being let go, then your expectations were way too high. I don't see the point of fretting over something that wasn't gonna happen anyway.

  12. What do you consider serious interest? I would say Hendry was serious about Beltran, but obviously wasn't willing to pay him a bunch of money he wouldn't earn.
  13. I couldn't do Hendry or Baker's job starting tomorrow. But give me 5 years working with a quality franchise and I think I could learn enough to be a competent GM (and a top 5 payroll wouldn't hurt). I'd never be able to manage, or coach for that matter (well, I could be a bench coach or bullpen coach, as long as I didn't have to teach anything). Baseball is very difficult to play well, and nearly as difficult to teach well. But it's not hard at all to understand the game, and what is needed to win. therein lies the problem.
  14. HA. Those are some blasts from the past. I thought Meyers was legit. He's a former top 10 prospect. Remember that 2000 championship rotation for West Tenn? Micah Bowie, Joey Nation, and Chris Gissell. Christensen, Lindsay Gulin, and Meyers all started for that team too.
  15. yeah, he was cruising til that point. 4 pitch K, 1 pitch weak flyout. Then again got ahead 0-2, and didn't finish the last guy.
  16. I agree. But I'm going to wait and hope Hendry has a better off-season then the one he had last year. This season was perfectly predictable once ST was over and Dusty was talking about 400+ AB for Hollandsworth. It was perfectly predictable when Hendry had to over bid for Jeromy b/c he was the last body standing. Now the Cubs are at another choice point. As others and myself have pointed out numerous times, it wasn't injury, bad luck, and chemistry that was the downfall of the Cubs. Let's see what Hendry does. If he is hot and heavy over Furcal, look out b/c Hendry just doesn't get it. If he goes after Wilson without also going after Giles, he doesn't get it. I hope Hoops grain of salt rumor is true. But given Hendry's track record I'm not so sure. I'd say it was injury. The dropoff from Nomar to Neifi was huge. Wood and Prior were hurt. Injuries were clearly responsible for some of the Cubs troubles this year, but they were fully expected with the roster the Cubs put out there.....which was the problem in the first place.
  17. Not a good inning for Guzman. The walks are unusual for him.
  18. I have heard the rumors of Hendry wanting to improve the 1-2 spots for Lee and Ramirez. While Furcal isn't great, he is an improvement. And then there's the Hoops' rumors of Castillo and Bradley that I like. There are some positive signs so far.
  19. Hendry's name was mentioned in pursuit Preston last offseason and at the trade deadline.
  20. Amen. Yeah, good point. I'd love 180 Ks and a .320 OBP out of the leadoff spot. With about 25 solo HRs. Really? I would have thought you would hate that? That's my sarcastic side.
  21. That's rough. All are winnable though. Tech is good for a late upset every year.

  23. That's how I feel. AA is for all intents and purposes the last stop before the majors. Anyone who can hit well in AA is gonna be fast tracked to the majors. I think Matt Murton showed what he can do straight from AA. And yet, the Cubs keep having guys skip high A. Why? What is the benefit? It certainly hasn't helped the big club. To be fair, that's not all that accurate. I can't think of that many prospects that have skipped low A since Corey Patterson. Ironically enough, the only one off the top of my head is Eric Patterson. He struggled some in AA and is in the AFL currently also. A few have skipped low A for high A (Nolasco comes to mind), but I don't think that's that big of a deal for former collegiate players.
