  1. I just don't understand how we got to this point, where a franchise is essentially frozen by a grievance that should have been resolved 3 years ago. Why didn't this get resolved sooner? Should there not be time limits on filling and ruling on grievances? Is there any precedent for this sort of a delay? Whether any of us agree with the Cubs baseball budget and their apparent interest in trading an elite(ish) young hitter, it sucks that their whole offseason is pending a seemingly clear cut resolution to a situation that should have been ruled on soon after the complaint was made. MLB offseason is the worst, and this certainly isn't helping.
  2. With Jesse Rogers hinting that a Bryant trade might be on the table this week, could a deal be structured with a PTBNL dependent on the result of his grievance? That might get a little messy, but seems like the best way to protect the other team against a lost year of service.
  3. I don't know why. I'm really not sure there's any production drop off from Contreras to Caratini/Chirinos. OTOH trading Contreras to sign Chirinos is pretty pointless. Chirinos probably isn't a worthwhile upgrade on defense and his 2020 salary will probably be higher than Contreras' How can you say it is pointless without knowing the return for Contreras? Looking at the catcher position in a vacuum, sure, the Cubs are better with Contreras in 2020 than with any other available catcher. But what are they gaining elsewhere?
  4. I'm not sure my idea of a prominent position matches Heyman's.
  5. I wonder if it was a use it or lose it thing with him. Where once he warms up you gotta bring him in soon after and if he sits down and not brought in he’s done. Could be, but then they severely mismanaged by not getting him in the game.
  6. Are they just not going to use Cole now? Saving him for the 10th?
  7. Not with the contact Washington is making off Greinke. He is making it look easy. Meanwhile, Scherzer is struggling through every batter.
  8. Go horsefeathers yourself Joe Torre.
  9. Just fight it out Base Wars style. Keep the umps out of it.
  10. I don't get pulling Strasburg there. It's his last game of the year and pitch count was still reasonable. Why not let him finish and keep the back end bullpen guys fresh for possible multiple innings tomorrow?
  11. oh no not that So we are not in favor of trading Bryant this offseason? Considering that the Cubs are extremely unlikely to re-sign him in 2 years, I would much rather get something for him now before he gets closer to Free Agency. He is set to make close to $20M in arbitration, so there's that too. Get some assets in return and spend the $20M elsewhere.
  12. Jesus Christ, months?!??! That’s ridiculous for both parties Not for Bryant. It gives him a little more leverage on a possible mutual agreement or contract extension (unlikely) if the grievance decision is still looming. A delay really only hurts the Cubs and their flexibility, as trading him is basically off the table until the decision is made.
  13. If the Nats don't tear that contract up after this season and give him more money, they are jerks. Uh huh, cuz that's definitely happened before. It has. See Alex Cora - https://www.overthemonster.com/2018/11/14/18095840/alex-cora-contract-red-sox

  15. This is fun. Go Nats!
  16. The only thing I can think of that would lead to Bryant having a case is that the Cubs knew about Olt's broken hand and delayed the official diagnosis to buy time. I have to believe they are smarter than that, as medical records would clearly show when the exact injury was diagnosed. Otherwise, it seems pretty cut and dry. The Cubs planned to keep Bryant in the minors for an undetermined amount of time. Olt got hurt. The extent of his injury wasn't immediately known. The timing of the diagnosis just so happened to coincide with Bryant's service time cutoff. Whether it was a day later or a month later is irrelevant. They had to make a move, and that move was to promote Bryant.
  17. According to Kaplan, Kris Bryant's service time grievance is going to be heard this week. I can't imagine Bryant winning, since it would seem to open the door for grievances all over MLB. Also, why did they wait 4 years to resolve this?
  18. Is Jim Riggleman available again?
  19. Who was the home plate umpire in Game 1? Giving credit where it is due, he was on it tonight. He had one of the best and most consistent strike zones I have seen in awhile.
  20. I don't even own a PS4 and I still want to buy that.
  21. It only took me a little over a year after being publicly shamed, but the broken avatar is no more!
  22. I suppose Ross could have already quietly had a second interview, or the Cubs know him well enough that it wasn't necessary. I'm thinking the job might be Espada's to lose though.
  23. I'm curious whether the Nationals will tear up Dave Martinez' contract and give him a new deal, or are the Nats gonna Nat and continue to pay him less than $1M the year after going to the World Series.
  24. It is fun watching Scherzer. He is having the time of his life out there.
  25. Me too. Even though he only played with the Cubs for a few years, he was one of my favorite players as a kid. I thought, as most did, that he was toast earlier this season. I'm really glad the Nationals stuck with him and turned things around. It also provides a future counter-argument to the "fire the manager to give the team a spark" school of thought.
