  1. I think the most compelling reason would be that there is a good chance he was the 4th best OF on the team, and $3m is not outlandish for 4th OF, especially not for a team that guarantees $5m for Neifi Perez. There was also a decent chance he'd be the 3rd best OF, and an outside shot of being the best or second best OF on this years team. That's not saying I expect him to be all that good this year, but the current OF isn't any good, and it wouldn't take much to outproduce some of them, at least. Neifi had a far better year than Corey did.
  2. I don't think we really need a guy who strikes out 46% of the time.
  3. If I need a pinch hitter to draw a walk, I'd take Fontenot, other than that Perez.
  4. Not to start a huge debate on comparisons between Neifi and Fontenot, but Fontenot is a much better all around hitter than Neifi, IMO. Neifi is better defensively. Based on organizational philosophies, Neifi is a tools guy and Fontenot isn't. Neifi is good with the leather and can switch hit and doesn't strike out much. Fontenot is not as good with the leather, draws too many walks and strikes out more often than Neifi. Fontenot makes more happen when he does put a bat on the ball, however. Fontenot isn't quite the second coming of Mark Bellhorn, but he's not that far off. Dusty had no use for a guy like Bellhorn. This organization just doesn't put any value on the ability to work the count and draw the occasional walk to get guys 90 feet closer to home. Bellhorn has power which little Mike doesn't. Without the power, Bellhorn has no value either.
  5. You seem to have anger issues. Threats aren't appropriate here.
  6. I think they kept him because of the LH bat. That's the only reason I can think of.
  7. The improved morale really helped results form 2004 to 2005. If Walker hurt the team's morale, and thus hurt their chances, a less stupid GM would have chosen to stay with that gutty team guy Grudz when he had the chance instead of resigning Walker. Yep, should have kept Grudz. Too bad Hendry went the Moneyball route. :( Hendry, Moneyball? I'm sure he never read it, and I know he's never filled his roster that way. He missed the bible of baseball? Hard to believe.
  8. Maybe JP can hire the out of work DoPo and he can bring his computer.
  9. I would rather keep Reed and trade Pierre as well. He's going to be one of the better leadoff hitters for the next 10 years. Based on what? We finally have a true leadoff hitter and this board doesn't like him.
  10. I'd rather have Frank Thomas or Piazza than Juan Gonzales.
  11. no disrespect intended, but i will take it with a grain of salt. i can't see JH dealing hill, walker and patterson and only ending up with ibanez and clement. frankly, i think it's likely jwill will put up better numbers than clement next season, and at a fraction of the cost. I'd do that trade. Hill is the only one who has any value currently. Walker and Patterson, may play great, but they have no trade value now.
  12. There is no real demand for Walker, if there was, he'd be gone.
  13. If Walker is such an improvement as a hitter over Soriano, why aren't all the teams lining up to offer great deals for him? Reading this thread, you would think Washington would be calling Hendry and offering Soriano and cash and another player for Walker. Guess the baseball world doesn't value Todd Walker the same as people here do.
  14. It's not Rosenthal. It's the AP picking up a story in the NY Daily News.
  15. And Atlanta fleeced Beane on the Hudson deal.
  16. So what if those guys were overrated here. What's your point? No one here knows what their talking about? Should we "hope" all the Cubs prospects suck? As overrated as they might have been, Choi turned into Derrek Lee, Bobby Hill turned into Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton, Brendan Harris turned into Nomar and Juan Cruz turned into the infamous Andy Pratt. Tell me how that's not a good thing? Indulge me rather than insult me. Thanks in advance. I am not insulting you. That is my point, trading these prospects is a good idea. I would trade any of them because we do not have any can't miss prospects, none. Yes, some may work out nicely, but none should be untouchable. It was a joke before the Rule V draft with all the handwringing over Barandon sing for God sake, just like the pitcher a few years ago from MIT. IF I can get a player like Tejada for Murton, Cedeno, Pie- I sure would do it.
  17. what are you trying to say? Are you saying those guys weren't over rated here?
  18. And you know this how? Sorry, but you always seem to be calling people out for statements similar to this one. Calling people out? That's your opinion. I try to treat people with respect whether I agree with them or not. Dubois was traded because he was a bad defender. I think that speaks volumes. That and he couldn't hit a major league curve. He doesn't seem to be in Cleveland's plans either, along with other former Cub minor league phenoms, Cruz, Choi, Hill, Harris and others that many thought would be stars.
  19. I would imagine you would agree that we can't go into the 2005 season with this for an outfield: (assuming Patterson will be traded) Jacque Jones Juan Pierre Matt Murton Jerry Hairston John Mabry That might be one of the worst outfields ever assembled. And yet it could still quite possibly outproduce the numbers from 2005. Patterson was so bad last year, Pierre would have to have a second extreme down year in a row to be as bad. Jones probably won't be any better than Burnitz, but there is a good chance Murton can outproduce the filth that came from LF last year. Plus, the OF bench would probably be better. You can't mean LF will out produce Todd and the "creature", god anything should be able to out produce that fiasco.
  20. Not necessarily. Depends heavily on a bounceback from Pierre, who is playing 2B, how often Neifi plays, whether Murton can get the job done and/or what veteran Dusty replaces him with. There's a good chance they'll get solid OBP from 1B and 3B. They should have above average OBP from CF. Barrett's game is more about his AVG and SLG than OBP, but he could be above average for C (though you have to remember Blanco will get lots of time and significantly bring down the overall OBP from that position). You can't just say the OBP is good from 6 of 8 so let's ignore it. The Cubs have a clear OBP problem, and it's directly tied to lack of walks. That problem hasn't gone away. The goal should not be about being average, or even above average in this department anyway, it should be about being great. But the Cubs were awful and are probably still below average. The Cubs had a higher OBP than the White Sox and Astros last year. It is not the only number that matters.
  21. I disagree with you. Your description sounds more like George Offman of the score. Levine has more contacts in the organization than anyone else in the city.
  22. Phil is drinking again, apparently very heavily, to come up with this nonsense.
