I'm not as concerned about his background because, as UK and others have pointed out, one does not need to be a successful baseball type to be a successful team president. I agree that he has been very successful. I am somewhat concerned that it's an in-house promotion and that, well, they didn't seem to look very hard or very far to find a replacement. One thing I was waiting to hear from FitzSimons was the case for why McDonough was the best person for the job. I didn't hear him even address it. I could understand if they said they very quietly vetted candidates and decided that McDonough was the best. But in this situation, he comes across as the default guy, not the best guy. That's not fair to him, but it's the way it is. I like what McDonough has said so far. I really hope he can make some changes. It's just a strange situation when he says there's a sense of urgency to win a World Series but there's no real tangible changes (yes, I know it's only been 2 days). It still seems like an organization that's drifting.
