  1. There's a sticky full of links in this forum right below this sticky thread.
  2. I put a sticky up in this forum with links to WGN Radio, ESPN1000 and The Score, all of whom have said they'll be carrying the press conference live. I haven't heard whether it will be televised.
  3. WGN Radio, ESPN 1000 and The Score have all said they will be carrying the press conference live. Here's the info for listening in: WGN Radio AM 720 (click listen live in top LH corner) ESPN Radio Chicago AM 1000 (click 'listen live' tab) The Score AM 670 (click big orange Listen Live) From the Discussion Thread: ESPN News has the press conference listed as a program alert. They will televise it live at 1 ET/12 CT. This will be shown on Comcast SportsNet: http://chicago.comcastsportsnet.com/view_content_0p.asp?ID=37938
  4. Congrats to UMFan! I called it in my sig when he built up the amazing lead. He wins the Jeremy Hermida auto'd bat.
  5. If that happens, Gary Hughes would be the GM for the next year at least. Does anyone here really want that to happen? Well, then all the Gary Hughes apologists would finally shut up about how much of a great baseball guy he is and how much he deserves a GM job. The Gary Hughes Fan Club = quite a niche-y fan club. :)

Great. Is there anyone on the team who doesn't have shoulder and elbow problems? I wonder when this was diagnosed.
  7. He seemed less than enthused. I think he said, "well, I wouldn't rule it out" and his expression was like he just bit into a sour lemon.
  8. Wow, they went from 8.5 games over Minnesota on July 1 to a 1-game lead on July 31. A bigger overall loss of games by Detroit, but still impressive. eta: though I suppose not nearly as impressive as losing 7 games in a week like the Cardinals did

You have some pretty high standards. Is that bad? I guess I should lower them for a last place team.

And given that he can't throw the ball without spiking or airmailing it, I really hope they give some consideration to moving him out of RF if they can't unload him altogether.

To me ... for his salary, it's fine. But he's a mediocre at best right fielder on a team full of mediocre at best players. Whoooopie.
  12. Girardi is apparently out on Tuesday; wonder how long it will take them to hire Gonzalez.
  13. Ha ha ha, somehow that's fitting Nice job Cubs, Nice job, Trib
  14. The Trib and the Cubs have Dusty pictured as if he's leaving. http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/photo/2006-10/25681520.jpg
  15. McDonough was also VP of Broadcasting in addition to Marketing. That's why all the rumors started about Stone-to-the-tv-booth and Brenly-to-the-dugout. It's also why it makes sense that he would have been meeting with Stone.
  16. I agree and he seemed to treat people with respect. I never had a problem with him in that respect. And honestly, if you'd have given me a choice...MacPhail or Hendry, it would've been Hendry. I feel like Hendry and Dusty both are very stubborn in their losing ways, while MacPhail is willing to take responsibilty for his failures. I wish MacPhail well. Except that MacPhail could have booted Hendry at any time and instead gave him an extension earlier this season. He has seen (and overseen) many more losing years than either Hendry or Dusty have with the Cubs. MacPhail seems like a gracious enough guy and I'm sure he'll have continued success with MLB or elsewhere. It's time and it has been time for the Cubs to go in a different direction. I don't know that McDonough represents a new direction, but what they've been doing with MacPhail in charge hasn't been working.
  17. Yes and yes, they did have dinner together. I don't see Stone becoming the GM. I've been wrong before. I would like to see bridges mended between Stone & the Cubs, which should be easier if Dusty is no longer in the picture. There have been a lot of rumors about whether Ron Santo will continue on as a full-time radio broadcaster --- specifically, how much longer he'll do the road games, since he did miss a couple of road series this season. I like Santo in the booth and hope he continues on. If he chooses to cut back his schedule for health reasons, I'd prefer Stone in the booth as a PT replacement over Otto.
  18. I was just thinking there was some room for hope in that regard. He has been with the organization for a long time, though, so hard to say if opinions have already been calcified. At the risk of being a contrarian, I think the Cubs have been excellent at times in player evaluation. They traded Choi, Bobby Hill, and Brendan Harris while acquiring DLee, Aram, and Murton. Unlike most of this board, the Cubs were on target about Jacque's abilities. The problem isn't scouting, it's not relying on stats as well as scouting. Finding a platoon partner for Jacque, batting high OBP guys #1 and #2, etc. The management team needs balance, not a complete overhaul. My comment was more geared toward the stats side, and it seems that -- if Gary Hughes' comments in that roundtable were any indication -- balance has been lacking in the front office.
