  1. If he wanted Girardi, the deal would be done. There seems to be a romantic notion that Girardi will hold out hoping for the Cubs job. If he does, he won't be managing. If Girardi gets an offer from the Nationals and he wants to manage, he should take it, because the phone isn't going to be ringing with a Cubs offer. Girardi wasn't my guy, either, though I wouldn't be outraged if he had ended up with the job. This quote, though ... infuriates me ... Good for Hendry that he has such close ties to Florida management. I guess he'll always have a job in baseball, and at least he had a team to root for after Game 6 in '03. I don't mind him choosing his guy. I do mind him having his Florida compadres tell him that he shouldn't hire the guy they fired after they hired a guy he was kinda sorta thinking about hiring. What are we to think? He can't do his job without someone telling him what to do? He's like a submissive looking for just the right dominatrix. No amount of talking is going to change his perspective (yeah, that's just Rozner's take). Is Rozner's take reality?
  2. So Piniella was the shoo-in for a whole 24 hours. I can get behind Bochy as long as he doesn't cost much in the way of talent. Everyone on the list so far will cost money, and, since it's not my money, I'm not going to waste much time worrying about who's cheapest. There's nothing exciting about Bochy. That could be a good thing. Padres fans don't care much one way or another whether he sticks around. Bochy batting Bellhorn in the playoffs really seems to have ticked them off. I wonder who Piniella's "close friends" who are trying to dissuade him are? I'd bet Brennaman is one, though I hope for his sake (as I would for anyone's) that Piniella doesn't really consider him a "close friend." It sort of seems Girardi is toast as far as the Cubs job.
  3. and claim Justin Hampson from the Rockies.
  4. What is it a sign of? Hendry is still in danger of losing whoever his top choice is. If it's Piniella, the Giants remain very interested in him. If it's Girardi, the Nationals are rumored to have him at the top of their list. After being publicly dismissed by Piniella, they aren't going to let Girardi string them along on the off-chance that the Cubs might offer him a job. If it's Bochy, Chris De Luca writes today that the Cubs still haven't requested permission to interview him: Although it was reported that the Cubs were intending to request permission, they apparently haven't gotten around to doing so yet. That jibes with what Towers said the other day. Towers also said that the first thing San Diego had on their off-season to-do list was hammering out a contract extension for Bochy. (realizing that there are also rumors that Alderson is willing to let them both walk)
  5. And won't Jim probably sign whatever manager he gets to a 2 year deal only? Aren't GM's usually unlikely to sign a manager for longer than their own contract? I believe the Cubs said or indicated early on that they wouldn't have a problem signing a manager for a longer term than Hendry's current contract. I'm not sure Piniella would want a contract longer than 2-3 years.
  6. Sweet Lou won't come cheaply.
  7. He's not the only one. I'm honestly a little surprised that the baseball media types seem almost unanimous in endorsing Piniella for the Cubs job. Of course, it was probably the same way when Dusty was hired, too.
  8. I don't know of a website. In terms of the Cubs, the media guides have a list of all Cubs coaches since 1921. It includes years, but doesn't differentiate according to what type of coach they were. If you're looking for a specific year, let me know what they are and I'll list the coaches.
  9. Phil Rogers (yeah, I know) suggests that the Nationals' interest in Girardi may force Hendry's hand. Rogers favors Piniella.
  10. He was also talking about how getting on base leads to runs. That was interesting as well. Maybe he doesn't know what OBP means (did he actually say that?), but it indicated he grasps the concept if not the acronym. He also praised the Tigers for pacing Verlander this season, his first full season. I'd think he was interviewing for the job while broadcasting except that none of that would impress Hendry, anyway. :(
  11. I'm not a fan of hiring him, but wasn't that a "productive out" situation instead of a sac bunt? I think he was praising the runner being advanced despite the out. (realizing that's a little nit-picky)
  12. I only saw some speculation on that earlier. The thought was that by the time the seriousness of whatever problem it was became apparent, the plane was at too low an altitude and there weren't any landing areas available.
  13. I thought the Cubs were obligated to provide parking as part of the agreement for more night games, but I haven't heard anything about that since they put the garage on hold.
  14. If they bump up the payroll $20M to satisfy Sweet Lou, I could be persuaded! :) Did anyone else listen to Bruce Levine on the Talkin Baseball radio show on Sunday? He was going on about how the Cubs could take the $20M they had set aside for the parking garage that's now on hold and throw it into payroll. I'd think that would cause some accounting problems, but it was interesting to hear someone say it.
  15. The descriptions would be based on eyewitness reports and are sure to vary. CNN now saying they think there were two people on board and two in the condo that the plane crashed into. The NTSB will be having an initial press conference in a few minutes.
  16. He received his pilot's license in July. There are reports that the plane was smoking before it crashed. He broadcast a Mayday and reportedly was frantically looking for someplace to land. It sounds like a tragic accident.
  17. They're now saying no one else was on board and Lidle was flying it. They found his passport on the street.
  18. It's being reported on CNN as well.
  19. BA apparently put all the league top prospect lists in the print edition, but has paced out posting them online to coincide with chats. Arizona Phil listed the Cubs who made the league top prospect lists at the Cub Reporter.
  20. Mariotti still focused on the Cubs' managerial race in today's column.
  21. Brenly & Listach are next to be interviewed.
