  1. We won't hear anything about Joe until mid-December.
  2. OK, let's see - we're going to trade a guy who, when healthy, has maybe the best stuff in the National League. And we're going to do this just as he's entering the part of his career when he ought to become more of a pitcher and not just a thrower. And while he's recovering from shoulder surgery, so his trade value will be the lowest it's ever been. Ostensibly to save money to spend on a free agent class that's the worst in years. Just one question - why?
  3. Although, his early moves show no indication that this year will be any better than last year. What could he have done so far this offseason that would have been an indication that this year will be better than last year?
  4. signing/extending mediocre players further complicates the 40 man roster squeeze. when is the final 40 man set and the subsequent rule 5 draft?? The roster freeze date is usually in mid-November. The Rule 5 draft is usually at the winter meetings, which this year will be December 5-8, I believe.
  5. Didn't Grudz sign a 2 year deal? No.
  6. Braves, Mariners, Rangers, Mets. Diamondbacks, Dodgers outside possibilities.
  7. Yes, I got that, but I just wanted you to know that Guzman is extremely outgoing and gregarious. Just in case you've never seen him clowning around a minor league dugout.
  8. Howry, Seanez, Witasick among free agents. Reitsma, Vizcaino, Riske, Mota among arb eligible trade candidates. I'm sure there are others.
  9. I think Castillo would be a very big upgrade defensively over Walker. Obviously, unless his legs are shot. A healthy Castillo is probably the NL's best defender at 2B.
  10. Trade for Luis Castillo and pass on Furcal. Personally, if Castillo's healthy, I'm for getting them both. Trade for Bradley and Tracy or Kearns.
  11. How is Castillo physically? The last thing I want is a hobbled Castillo with less range than Todd Walker.
  12. Guillermo Mota is third time arb eligible this offseason. He's not a free agent.
  13. We need to find a long term leadoff man who plays a position other than CF. Furcal is the guy. The last thing we need is RumDum trying to turn Felix Pie into a leadoff hitter.
  14. Hairston + one of Mitre/Welly/Leicester for Bradley, anyone? Done.
  15. Personality-wise, Guzman is the anti-Patterson.
  16. One must root against evil, wherever it may lie. The most evil entity in the 2005 World Series, by far, was Lance Berkman. Hence, I cheered for the White Sox. The fact they're from Chicago and I kind of liked them during the Pat Kelly/Carlos May/Bill Melton/Wilbur Wood years is secondary.
  17. is it his lifetime obp of .340 , his lifetime slugging of .442 or his lifetime ba of .249 that makes him worth 7 mil a year? talk about a horrendous contract! An OPS of .782 combined with Gold Glove defense in CF for $7 is a horrendous contract? Did I just time travel back several years?
  18. Never thought I'd say it, but I wish the Cardinals had won. I'm not sure of the rules around here, but shouldn't this poster be banned?
  19. The fact that there is no foul ground out there doesn't help. And the bullpen mound is another lovely obstacle.
  20. Players eligible to declare free agency have a 15-day window to do so, starting today.
  21. If there really is a "window of opportunity", then MLB should just contract the Cubs right now. The point is not to say "Oh, boy, we got lucky stumbling onto Prior. And we produced Zambrano despite our awful minor league development staff. Wow, we really tricked the Marlins and the Pirates into giving us Lee and Ramirez for nothing. We'd better win soon or our chance will be gone forever." If that's what we're doing, then our franchise is dead and shall forever be so. The point is to develop a solid organization that's not dependent upon one particular player or set of players. Zambrano leaves as a free agent? Oh, well, that's too bad, but we'll plug in Maynard Wingtip from our minor league system and give it a go. Or trade for some other team's Tim Hudson and strap 'em on and go out there again. If we merely have a "window of opportunity" that's tied to a particular group that we lucked into, it's all over.
  22. I'd rather sign B.J. Ryan to team with Dempster in the pen, but that's not going to happen, so I have some interest in Burnett. Especially since BGiles to the Cubs probably isn't going to happen. There's enough payroll room for a couple of mid-priced outfielders (Wilkerson and Bradley?), Furcal, and a $9-ish pitcher.
  23. When Vazquez was at his peak with the Expos, his stuff was significantly better. Significantly better than it is now, not significantly better than Guzman's. Right, Tim?
