  1. Having Furcal around to lead off will keep Crusty from trying to put square peg Felix Pie into the round hole of the #1 spot in the batting order.
  2. Angel Guzman has one option year remaining. He can be optioned to the minor leagues next season.
  3. But, Furcal also gets gunned down attempting to steal. 10 times this year alone. Walker got caught stealing once. Furcal stole 46 bases at an 82% success rate. He's an elite base stealer.
  4. For anyone familiar with the Orioles... Has BJ Ryan ever expressed any interest in being a starting pitcher? Do you think he could be successful in that role? Does he have that kind of stuff? Would that be worth investigating? If you could entice him to come here as a starter, you'd still be able to move him back to the bullpen if the experiment didn't work out (assuming the experiment didn't wind up "LaTroying" him).
  5. Can Hendry call the agents for the available players now or does he have to wait until the X amount of days after the World Series? I know he can't talk to the players themselves until then. You can't talk to a player or his representative until the player elects free agency. The player is not "available" until then. The day following the end of the World Series marks the commencement of the 15-day period during which eligible players may elect free agency. I'm not sure if you can talk to a player or his representative during that period (if, for example, the player elected free agency on the first day of the period) or if you have to wait until the end of the period.
  6. Who or what, if anything, stands out? Loaiza has bargain potential and shares the same agent with Mark Prior.
  7. Randy Winn: Not the flashiest of players, but plays a solid outfield while putting up career averages of 290/350/430. He's been slightly above those numbers this year and has stolen 19 bases. He won't turn 32 until June of next season. Almost positive he's a free agent. Nope, the Giants have an option on him and he has his own option if the Giants decline to exercise theirs.
  8. It's difficult for me to conceive of a worse idea.
  9. But you never know, this is baseball. There is a sucker born every minute. Usually on the north side of Chicago.
  10. Don't we think Arizona learned its lesson about trading multiple players to a Central division team for a long and lanky slugging first baseman?
  11. I really don't see the Cubs spending enough to land both Giles and Furcal. It really isn't too likely at all. I agree with that, but they're going to have to put the payroll somewhere. The Cubs are probably going to have around $40 million to spend on eleven players. At least two (or three, if they carry six reserves next season) of those eleven are going to be bench guys. It could be four (or five), if Murton and Cedeno get everyday jobs. It's going to be tough to spend that much money without bringing in two very highly paid new players.
  12. Outside of Walker, Nomar, Cedeno and Neifi!, what are some outside options for 2B? Are there any intriguing possibilities? It has been suggested that the Braves might trade Marcus Giles and apply those savings to resigning Rafael Furcal.
  13. Lofton would be fine, but I'd still want Furcal to lead off.
  14. You'd have to tie Nomar's hands behind his back to get him to take a pitch to allow Furcal to steal a base. Not a good fit at #2.
  15. If you can't get Giles, resign Burnitz and sign Jacque Jones. Jones plays CF for one season until Pie is ready, then he slides over into RF. You'll need a RH platoon partner for Jones, though. Hairston for year 1 in CF, then someone with a little more pop for years 2 and 3 in RF. The problem with this is that the big FAs used to always be the first to sign. Now, many of them wait until January or even February. Jones will probably be gone by the time Giles gets around to signing.
  16. Give me Furcal at SS instead of Wagner as closer. Cedeno at 2B with Hairston as insurance. Giles, yes. Nomar in LF is fine if he'll do it. Otherwise, Murton. Trade Walker and some out-of-options pitching to Cleveland for third-time arb eligible RHP David Riske.
  17. I'd rather cough up a little bit more for Jacque Jones or, if possible, trade for Austin Kearns. We got a decent season from Burnitz - let's not try to go to that well once too often.
  18. “I chose to come here because I love the team and I love the easy money and I love the city and the remarkably dumb fans. Plus, winning means nothing here - you don't really even have to take the field. It's great!,” said Walker... You misquoted him.
  19. Whether it's Mitre, Pinto, Hill, Koronka, Rusch, or Burnett, though, is the big question. The only two ways it could be Mitre is if he's in the bullpen or if he clears waivers in the spring. And if he's in the bullpen, he probably wouldn't be used like that, since he wouldn't be "stretched out".
  20. id offer up 4-years/$32M and see if he accepts. thats renteria money. How is that Renteria money?
  21. Brian Giles - $35/3, with a combination team/player/vesting option for a fourth season. Austin Kearns - acquired in trade from the Reds - OR - Jacque Jones - $16.5/3. Rafael Furcal - $40/4, with a combination team/player/vesting option for a fifth season. Rob Mackowiak - acquired in trade from Pittsburgh, as he may become too costly for the Pirates as a second time arbitration eligible player. Billy Wagner - $24/3. LF - Jacque Jones or Brian Giles CF - Adam Greenberg RF - Brian Giles or Austin Kearns 3B - Aramis Ramirez SS - Rafael Furcal 2B - Nomar Garciaparra 1B - Derrek Lee C - Michael Barrett OF - Matt Murton IF - Neifi Perez IF - Ronny Cedeno UT - Rob Mackowiak C - Henry Blanco SP - Kerry Wood SP - Greg Maddux SP - Carlos Zambrano SP - Mark Prior SP - Glendon Rusch RP - Rich Hill RP - Will Ohman RP - Todd Wellemeyer or Michael Wuertz (prefer Wellemeyer, as he will be out of options) RP - Roberto Novoa RP - Scott Williamson RP - Ryan Dempster RP - Billy Wagner It looks like this would wind up being around $105.
  22. Hoops, are you counting Wood and/or Van Buren among the 20 pitchers? With Wood and Van Buren included, I've got the 40-man roster at an even 40 (21 pitchers).
