  1. The Cubs have traded Barry Foote to the Marlins for Juan Pierre.
  2. Marlins want Pie So what? I want Delmon Young for Todd Walker. I also want a date with Bridget Fonda. Doesn't mean I'm gonna get either.
  3. December 7th is the deadline by which you have to offer arbitration to your former players who are now free agents (Burnitz, Nomar, Fox, Grieve). If you don't offer, you wave goodbye to them. December 20th is the deadline by which you have to tender a contract offer to all of your other players - those who are eligible for arbitration (Zambrano, Patterson, Hairston, Macias) and everyone else. If you don't tender them a contract offer, they become free agents.
  4. Pardon me if I'm wrong, but if we wait until February, we won't be able to sign Burnitz either. Don't we lose the right to negotiate with him after December 20 (until May 1)? We (hopefully) lose the right to negotiate with him on December 7th.
  5. A seven man bullpen is OK if you have all viable guys. If the 6th and 7th guys are awful, of course Dusty isn't going to use them. Dempster-MacDougal-Williamson-Wuertz-Seanez-Ohman-Rusch
  6. Patterson and Lowell to the Dodgers, Pierre to the Cubs, OPerez and Bradley to the Marlins. Add as necessary.
  7. Desirable bench: Mark Sweeney-Dave Roberts-Wes Helms-Neifi Perez-Henry Blanco
  8. The Pirates trading Mackowiak would make sense except that their strength in young players is in pitching. They need offense wherever they can find it. I expect them to bring him back.
  9. Guys ahead of Koronka Van Buren I doubt that.
  10. I know the "an out is an out" crowd will go nuts, but Mench puts the ball in play a lot more frequently that does ol' Jeromy. Mench isn't great, but he'd be quite cheap for the Cubs next season. He'd fit nicely batting sixth. Unfortunately, the Cubs need someone to hit FIFTH.
  11. Sign Wes Helms as a free agent or trade for Russell Branyan or Rob Mackowiak.
  12. I will be shocked - shocked, I say! - if Godzilla doesn't return to the Yankees.
  13. How much money do the Mets have to spend this offseason? I believe they have 27 gazillion dollars.
  14. Please take a cue from The Wrath of Khan and create value (life) where there is none (lifelessness). Trade SOMETHING for Bradley. At worst, you nontender him in December. At best, you either use him yourself or trade him for something later in the offseason.
  15. I think we should tone down our requirements for our RF. We don't really need much more than an .825-.850 type guy out there. That said, sign Giles!
  16. In addition, two reports put the Marlins in the middle of preliminary discussions on a multiteam trade that is said to involve the Chicago Cubs' Corey Patterson and Florida's Juan Pierre. This would suggest that it's a more than two team trade.
  17. Todd Walker, Sergio Mitre, and one or two minor leaguers to the Indians for Jake Westbrook
  18. Two minor leaguers for Brady Clark.
  19. Longshot possibility: A can of Spam for Steve Finley.
  20. A prediction, not necessarily a wish: Cubs trade one out-of-options pitcher and one Rule-5-eligible pitcher to the Royals for Mike MacDougal.
  21. PH = Patently Hideous?
  22. December 20th. The question is - will the gift be Macias' or ours?
  23. I see a Z and Hill for Abreu and that 4th or 5th guy. Why not just cut off half your toes and soak your foot in alcohol? That would be so bad it would make people start to refer to Brock-for-Broglio as "back when the Cubs made good trades".
  24. Just heard on ESPN that Maddux called Furcal trying to dissuade him from coming here. Interesting. Fixed.
  25. (Hendry said) At this point nt looking for the high-priced closers to sign. That's a shame. B.J. Ryan.
