  1. Can I take a shot at the board as a whole? One point that was made on another, more reasonable board :D is that it seems like one way that Dusty may endear himself to the grizzled veterans is to help them make their incentive money. By guaranteeing the $2.5, you take that reason for playing the veteran away from Dusty. It's not the right way to handle the situation - Fire Buttermaker! - but it is a plausible explanation.
  2. I don't doubt that, even in the best case, Neifi will start more than he should. One difference between the Dubois and Cedeno situations is that Baker, like Hendry, prefers guys with natural athleticism and multiple skills. Dubois' limited skill set doomed him from the start in Dusty's eyes.
  3. I should preface this by saying definitively that I have no idea how contract negotiations really work. Having said that, what if Kinzer told Hendry that, unless he signed Neifi to this deal, he'd advise Furcal to take a larger Mets offer? But, if he signed this deal, he'd advise Furcal to take the Cubs offer as long as it was within X% of the Mets offer? Unethical? Maybe, but either way Kinzer could say he acted in Furcal's best interest - a) I got him the most money or b) I advised him to stay at SS where his future value will be highest. I don't know if that's realistic or not, but, if it is, what do you do? Call his bluff? (You should answer that question assuming that you're dead set on adding Furcal to the club.) I wouldn't want to be in that situation.
  4. Why would Texas EVER do that for that collection of Cubs' mediocrity? Because Blalock suspiciously became awful just when steroid testing began? Nevertheless, such a trade is extremely unlikely.
  5. Rotoworld reports that Manny has no interest in the Mets. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.asp?leaguenum=&sport=MLB&id=5132
  6. Depends what kind of injury. Shoulder, maybe. Elbow, no.
  7. Crawford is likely to be very, very costly in terms of young talent if he's even available. Pierre should be cheaply obtainable.
  8. The fact that he's getting paid like that may not be good, but it is not the reason that he may start. Buttermaker is.
  9. Bruce - When you get a chance, I'd like to know how Neifi's money will be spread out over the two years, if you have that information.
  10. You are our only link; the only bridge from knowledge to ignorance. Or even from ignorance to knowledge.
  11. If it's any consolation, calculations suggest that the $30 figure is AFTER Rusch and Neifi.
  12. Are you sure they were talking about Bruce Miles and not Bruce Levine? I doubt The Score would be referencing a guy that works for a competing station.
  13. though i may not have a hat quite like that one Are you kidding? That's a heavy lid.
  14. http://www.listin.com.do/cuerpos/deporte/dep4.htm According to this website, it's $5/2 PLUS a $1 signing bonus, if my Spanish is correct.
  15. Bruce, also, at your leisure... There are reports of Cub interest in B.J. Ryan, even after having signed Dempster. If you know, is that genuine? Seems like he might be a better value at $7 or so than Burnett at $11-ish. Thanks ever so much.
  16. Bruce, when you have time... Is the Cubs reported interest in Juan Pierre dependent upon them not getting Furcal, or might they get them both? Is it an either/or thing? Thanks ever so much. Say "hi" to Neifi for me.
  17. In your opinion, Bruce, will Neifi start over Cedeno? This is how the whole thing will work. The Cubs value Neifi. Hendry wants him to return as a backup. Neifi would prefer to be a starter and would likely get offers to start on the free agent market. To convince Neifi to stay and be a backup, Hendry gives him starter's money. There may also be some quid pro quo going on between Hendry and Neifi's/Furcal's agent. (So far, everything's still OK. You may not agree with the money paid to him, but it's not a complete and total disaster yet. Keep reading.) Dusty, placing a player's salary over his ability, will start Neifi instead of Cedeno at 2B. Hendry, saying that it's the manager's job to decide who plays, bends over and takes it like Ned Beatty scrambling up a hillside.
  18. Im pretty sure Ice isn't out of options. Ice = Leicester? If so, then let me assure you that he is out of options. Rostered in November 2002. Optioned in 2003, 2004, and 2005. He's out.
  19. Eyre won't be paid like a LOOGY. He'll be paid like a quality setup man, and, as such, overpaid.
  20. Eyre's going to get paid far too much money this offseason. That's all I was saying.
  21. I'd rather have Jacque Jones than Juan Encarnacion.
  22. Is anyone else enjoying the irony of someone worried about "overpaying for Furcal" advocating the signing of Scott Eyre? I guess the magnitude of Eyre's overpayment is going to be smaller, but still...
  23. Bradley will likely get about $4 this season.
