I should preface this by saying definitively that I have no idea how contract negotiations really work. Having said that, what if Kinzer told Hendry that, unless he signed Neifi to this deal, he'd advise Furcal to take a larger Mets offer? But, if he signed this deal, he'd advise Furcal to take the Cubs offer as long as it was within X% of the Mets offer? Unethical? Maybe, but either way Kinzer could say he acted in Furcal's best interest - a) I got him the most money or b) I advised him to stay at SS where his future value will be highest. I don't know if that's realistic or not, but, if it is, what do you do? Call his bluff? (You should answer that question assuming that you're dead set on adding Furcal to the club.) I wouldn't want to be in that situation.
