  1. After an arbitration raise to Zambrano, my guess is its closer to 20. Currently under contract: Aramis Ramirez - $10,500,000 Derrek Lee - $9,416,667 Michael Barrett - $4,000,000 (estimated) Henry Blanco - $1,500,000 Kerry Wood - $12,000,000 Greg Maddux - $9,000,000 Mark Prior - $2,750,000 Ryan Dempster - $5,000,000 Todd Walker - $2,500,000 Scott Williamson - $2,000,000 Glendon Rusch - $2,750,000 Neifi Perez - $2,500,000 Scott Eyre - $3,666,667 (estimated) Subtotal #1 - $67,583,333 Add Zambrano at $6,000,000 and Murton, Cedeno, Ohman, and Wuertz at $350,000 each. Subtotal #2 - $74,983,333 That leaves about $25 million, assuming a payroll of $100 million.
  2. Right now we're down to about 20 million do fill our needs with. With a $100 payroll, there's about $25 left. That's counting Todd Walker as being on the team.
  3. The most frustrating thing is that, to attract a guy to sign with you, you might have to EITHER give him a little extra money OR throw him a bone like a player option. NOT BOTH!!!
  4. From Rotoworld: Scott Eyre - R - Giants The Cubs and Scott Eyre have reportedly agreed to terms on a two-year deal with a player option for a third year. FOXSports.com is calling it a three-year, $11 million deal. It's probably a better signing than the Neifi Perez and Glendon Rusch deals, but the Cubs are spending a lot of money on players who don't qualify as difference makers. Eyre is unlikely to ever again be as effective as he was last season. Nov. 17 - 8:41 pm et Source: MLB.com Man, did they nail that or what?
  5. Depending on the pitcher I don't see anything ridiculous for wanting a #2 starter in exchange for Abreu. I can think of 30 million reasons that it's ridiculous.
  6. The Phillies are looking for a #1 or #2 starter For Bobby Abreu? LOL! Wake me up when that happens.
  7. Overheard at Rafael Furcal's home in the Domincan Republic: "They signed WHO? For HOW MUCH? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" "Hello, Kinz? Get me the best deal you can from Schuerholz. I don't want any part of that circus."
  8. Player? hmm.. better than garunteed 3 years. WRONGO.
  9. The third year is a PLAYER option, so, if he's unbelievably good in the first two years, he'll leave. If he sucks, he'll stay.
  10. The only way Williamson's not coming back is if they trade him.
  11. Well atleast when the 3-year deal is over, he'll be 36. Young enough for us to re-sign!!!
  12. The Cubs did not have enough offense to win, and they can't just add "whomever they want". Ignoring the offense would be a terrible decision. Agreed. I want Giles, but the key is not having Perez, Patterson, Hairston, Hollandsworth, Macias, and Dubois get 35% of your team's PAs.
  13. If we haven't gotten to starting pitching yet, you should take Prior and Wood out of there. After all, we might want to trade Prior for Adam Dunn or Matt Karchner.
  14. Well then they have to sign at least one other Type A to justify such a move. Or Type B.
  15. Not sure if this has been addressed with the Eyre issue. However, I assume he's ranked somewhere in the Elias ratings, is it high enough to cost the Cubs a draft pick if he signs before the arbitration date? I'd hate to see this team lose another high pick for signing a reliever. Eyre is Type A. He'd cost the Cubs their 2nd round draft choice.
  16. It's interesting to note that the other teams on Eyre's narrowed down list are ATL, HOU, and STL. None of those clubs is really in any sort of position to be throwing ridiculously large money at him. I hope that somewhat mitigates what we pay for him.
  17. Not to call anyone out, but that's not what the Score reported. Murphy was talking hypothetically with Steve Stone about the 40 man roster and said "so if today, the Cubs sign Scott Eyre to a 3 year deal, he'd be put right on the 40-man roster?" This was in relation to the Leiscter trade. What say you, b_wiggy_66? Do you dispute this account?
  18. Yes. A whole bunch from what I understand. JK Ryu Ricky Nolasco Carlos Marmol Jon Connolly Ryan O'Malley Carmen Pignatiello Rich Hill Jason Wylie Hagerty Carlos Vazquez Buck Coats Matt Craig Micah Hoffpauir Adam Greenberg Dwaine Bacon Brandon Sing Bobby Brownlie Chadd Blasko Sean Marshall Billy Petrick Felix Pie Brian Dopirak Jake Fox Matt Murton This was compiled quite a while back, so there are a few that can be removed and a few that can be added as Rule 5 eligible. A few have already been added as well. Look at the pitchers alone: I'd hate to see any of these pitchers get picked up: Marmol, Petrick, Nolasco, Blasko, Marshall, Connolly, Ryu and Brownlie. Murton, Hill, and Greenberg are already rostered. The Cubs have 4 spots on the 40-man open right now, so that'll take care of Pie, Nolasco, and two of Marmol/Marshall/Ryu. The rest of the guys on that list rank anywhere from "garbage" to "damaged goods" to "mildly interesting". It would be nice if they cleared another spot for the third of the Marmol/Marshall/Ryu group. Other than that, the other clubs can go crazy in the Rule 5 draft, as far as I'm concerned.
  19. We have guys who are getting ready to be exposed to rule 5. We do?
  20. Not trying to be a wet blanket - just a realist. Well, cut it out.
  21. It does seem that Hendry has learned a lesson about older players from his recent experiences. Almost all of the players he's been rumored to be interested in this offseason are twenty somethings. It's a shame that said lesson learned might keep him away from Giles.
  22. Whether or not we want the Cubs to sign Giles, let's not use what the Yankees do as any sort of gauge as to what a normal team ought to do. If they sign Giles for three or four years and his balky shoulder puts him on the DL for 75% of the contract (not likely, but possible), they'll just write it off and go get somebody else.
  23. I really want Giles, but I can understand how team leadership may not think it necessary to add another .900+ OPS guy to the lineup, preferring instead to "spread it around", improve the woeful top of the batting order, make the team deeper, and improve the pitching. The Cubs do have two of the top 12-15 offensive players in the NL already, which is twice its share. This is, after all, a team that had 35% of its 2005 plate appearances made by Neifi Perez, Corey Patterson, Jerry Hairston, Todd Hollandsworth, Jose Macias, and Jason Dubois. If you replace a good portion of that 35% with, for example, Rafael Furcal, Juan Pierre, Brad Wilkerson, Kevin Mench, and Matt Murton, you may be enough better offensively to do some damage, even if you do lose Todd Walker. That said, sign Giles!
  24. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2005/11/17/SPG6QFPOHV1.DTL Eyre all but gone: Free-agent Reliever Scott Eyre, one of the most valuable members of the 2005 Giants, has decided he wants to pitch closer to his Florida home and has narrowed his choice to the Cubs, Cardinals, Astros and Braves, his representative said Wednesday night. Agent Tommy Tanzer expects to get Eyre a three-year deal worth at least $9 million.
  25. 1B: Derrek Lee - 8 Mil C: Michael Barrett - 3 Mil SP: Mark Prior - 2 Mil SP: Kerry Wood - 11 Mil One-third of Lee's $2 signing bonus will be paid this year. Also, it was reported that his 2006 salary will be bumped by $0.75 as a result of his third place finish in the MVP voting. The total 2006 layout to Lee is $9.417. The breakdown of Barrett's $12/3 deal was never reported (that I could find), but I believe his 2006 salary will be more along the lines of $4. Prior will make $2.75 next season. $2 is his base and his salary was escalated by $0.5 and $0.25 as a result of his place in the 2003 Cy Young voting and his selection to the 2003 All-Star game. One-third of Wood's $3 signing bonus will be paid this year. The total 2006 layout to Wood is $12.
