  1. Why they still sign middle-relievers after the Remlinger, Hawkins (who I liked personally) and Alfonseca experiences is beyond me. Can we please stop referring to Hawkins as an example of big money middle reliever contracts gone bad? Hawkins was terrific for us in a setup role and probably still would be if Buttermaker hadn't ruined him.
  2. How much can we trust this source? I mean, is this speculation or are you confident it's fact? I am confident that, if you knew who the source was, you would trust him.
  3. There's a blurb in Jayson Stark's most recent column that claims the same thing, although not as definitively. The hottest free agent no one has talked about much this winter is reliever Bobby Howry, whose rocketing price tag already appears to have priced him out of a return to Cleveland. Howry had a sensational season (only 49 hits allowed in 73 innings) -- and an even more sensational second half (0.99 ERA, .146 opponent average after the break). So he's being marketed as a young Tom Gordon -- a guy who will command closer's money but still could be a set-up man on the right team. One club extremely interested is the Phillies -- whether they sign Billy Wagner or not. One of Wagner's conditions for signing anywhere is having impactful set-up men around him. And Howry is the best set-up arm on the market. However, the Cubs now appear to have the inside track, at a possible $12 million for three years. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insider/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2231929
  4. A trusted source tells me that the Cubs roster currently stands at 40. Scott Moore and Kerry Wood are both included. Scott Eyre has not yet been officially added to the roster. Evidently, they'll have to add him to the roster within the next few days and, at that time, someone currently on will have to come off.
  5. Gammons: "Scott Eyre's already gotten 11 million dollars from the Cubs. Bobby Howry's getting 12 million dollars from the Cubs." Audio is available at espn.com.
  6. There's a blurb to that effect in Jayson Stark's most recent column.
  7. Wellemeyer (does he have any more options?) No. JVB (could repeat AAA) I doubt he's a realistic option, barring injury. Also, you forgot Mitre, although I assume he's not a realistic option either.
  8. Novoa is the odd man out? It's possible, although, if Wood starts the season on the DL, there will be a spot available. He could be traded, as well.
  9. All Hendry wants now is a RHP, and I think Bob Howry tops his wish-list. After that he seems to be set, but who is the set up man? Williamson? Eyre and the yet-to-be-acquired RHP will be the primary setup men. Wuertz and Ohman will work earlier in the game. Williamson is a wildcard.
  10. Is Kerry Wood on the 60-day DL? If he is he doesn't count against the 40-man. There is some question as to when the 60-day DL has to be cleared out. You can't keep players on the 60-day DL all offseason, I don't believe. Some have suggested that last Saturday was the deadline for clearing it out (deadline for filing reserve lists - "freezing minor league rosters"). Others have suggested that the deadline for clearing it out is December 20th (deadline for tendering contracts). Unfortunately. no one knows.
  11. As I understand it, Vazquez is due $18 of non-Yankee money over the next two seasons.
  12. I didn't hear this first hand, but, evidently, Von Joshua was on the radio one day and couldn't stop gushing over him. The radio guys asked him if Pie might one day get strong enough to hit double digit HR. Joshua laughed and said something to the effect of "Try forty plus". It has to be taken with a grain of salt, but it's worth more than the uninformed opinions of most of us.
  13. I assume it's a mistake. I have emails into cubs.com and Mr. Miles to try to get the scoop.
  14. Ah, nothing like dealing with a team with no General Manager!
  15. The Cubs have no outfield and the main issue surrounding the starting rotation is health, and we want to trade Felix Pie for Josh Beckett?
  16. Rowand's a decent player, but he's a bad fit for this team. Swings from the wrong side of the batter's box.
  17. Moore is definitely on. The 41st guy is either Wood on the 60-day DL or someone else that has been removed. I'm hopeful that it's Macias. If it were just another minor league type, why wouldn't that have been announced with the others? By the way, it's not strictly true that "There is no 60 day DL during the offseason.". Friday, the Reds removed a couple of guys from the 60-day DL. It is clear that there is some deadline by which the 60-day DL has to be cleared out. This link: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/teamTransactions?categoryId=71602 reports that Wood was removed from the 60-day DL on October 31st. The bottom line is that nobody has any idea who the 41st guy is.
  18. You might be surprised. Rumor has it they plan to flip Blalock once the trade is completed. I'm guessing to the Pirates. Maybe for Oliver Perez?
  19. Bradley, if he weren't a nut. Realistically, Pierre.
  20. Too bad, because Hill covers the same bases Neifi does (2B, SS and 3B), with better OBP, better SLG, and better speed. I'll give you better OBP, but Hill is one of the few MLB players weaker than Neifi in the power department. Whatever useful speed he had is gone. And he can play SS in the same sense that I can. Bobby Hill is a pretty terrible major league baseball player.
  21. One overlooked aspect of rostering these guys that we're fairly sure aren't going to get taken is that, without rostering them, you are prohibited from trading them between today and December 8th, except as a PTBNL. Just something else to consider.
  22. I quote it because if you're way above average in some areas, average is acceptable. You want to avoid being grossly below average in any area, like giving Corey Patterson, Neifi Perez, and Jose Macias 676 plate appearances in the 1-2 spots of your batting order. If the Cubs had had some guys that, oh, I don't know - got on base? - in those spots, the LF situation wouldn't have been nearly as big a problem as it was.
  23. It appears as though he does not yet qualify.
  24. Where's goony to tell everyone how dumb it would be to spend $7-$8 million a year over three years for Matt Morris when Jerome Williams is already on the team and we have no outfield?
  25. cubs.com is !@#$%^& me off beyond belief. They finally get around to updating the 40-man roster so maybe - just maybe! - I can get some intel on guy #41 who was let go and they forgot to add Scott Moore and Macias is still on there!!! Lousy sons of buzzards!!! (Me) It appears that the deadline for "freezing" rosters is today, not yesterday. Someone on another board pointed out that Wood is still on the 60-day DL. He needs to be taken off the DL and put back on the roster today. That will necessitate taking one more guy off the roster one way or another. Release Macias!!!
