  1. Ok...I don't have time to read through nine pages. Someone give me the cliff notes version of this thread. Pierre for Pinto and two minor leaguers in the works. Don't leave out all of the hand wringing.
  2. Actually, at this point any additional class A or B free agent will merely cost us a 4th round draft choice. We've already blown our second and third rounders on relievers. This is true.
  3. Juan Pierre: Three prospects and $5.5 million Rafael Furcal: $45 million and a second round draft choice An absolute guarantee that your manager won't bat an outmaker second: PRICELESS!!!
  4. What the hell is Gillick doing? Supposedly telling the Yanks that Michaels is off the table and then acq'g Rowand. Maybe Michaels is only off the table for that nothing-worth-trading organization.
  5. Cubs bullpen: Pre-ASG: .252/.328/.419 Post-ASG: .247/.321/.392 Not a huge difference.
  6. No doubt someone will put me in the "will complain about anything" camp for this, but Hendry could almost certainly have got away with not protecting Pinto from the December 2003 Rule 5 draft... That's true, but if he hadn't done so and we had lost him, a la Sisco, they'd have been able to hear the hollering down in Pinto's native Venezuela.
  7. One thing that is worth considering as far as Pinto is concerned. He has only one option year remaining. I like Pinto. He's my favorite of the "West Tennessee Five". However, he failed in his first AAA trial and he has only one year left in the minor leagues to get everything figured out before he has to break camp with a $100+ payroll supposed contender.
  8. No, what the Cubs really need is better than league average production at every single position. Now, there's an exaggeration.
  9. We're perfectly free to trade him now if Florida would take him. But that would expose FL to the chance that someone takes him in the rule 5, which is why most of the time guys in that position are listed as PTBNL's. I don't believe that's true. He was DFA'd. If we were to trade him to FL, they could put him on their 40-man roster. I think...
  10. Castillo has extremely serious leg issues. No, thank you.
  11. It's been reported today as being done, pending a physical. $12/3.
  12. Dang, Florida lovin the lefties? Sanchez, Petit, Pinto, to go along with their top arms: Olson and Vargas, not to mention Dontrelle. Sanchez and Petit are RHP.
  13. A minor league LHP from the Cubs to the Marlins? What could happen?
  14. Deal not done yet. None of the prospects is Pie. Pinto is one.
  15. Ofman's coming on the radio any minute here.
  16. Actually, if this report is true, I consider it a good thing. The more guys going to Florida, the less likely it is that any of them are top, top guys.
  17. "The Cubs were also closer to picking up Juan Pierre from Florida for three prospects."
  18. Sox will get Pierre. I think they will be willing to give up more than the Cubs, fortunately. Of course, they could move Scotty Poddy to CF and get a LF. I bet Williams next move is to go hard after Pierre. Does anyone think that KW would trade Anderson, Young, or McCarthy for Pierre?
  19. The White Sox may pursue Pierre, but they don't need a CF. They have Brian Anderson and Chris Young right behind him.
  20. Pre-Howry, the Cubs have 13 players with signed contracts for the 2006 season, for a total of $67,616,667. These 13 are: Aramis Ramirez Derrek Lee Michael Barrett Henry Blanco Kerry Wood Greg Maddux Mark Prior Ryan Dempster Todd Walker Scott Williamson Glendon Rusch Neifi Perez Scott Eyre Adding Zambrano at $6.0 and four "minimum wage" guys (Murton, Cedeno, Ohman, and Wuertz) at $0.35 each brings the total to $75,016,667. Adding Howry at $4.0 brings the total to $79,016,667. Use that figure to arrive at what's left - depending upon what you want to assume the actual payroll limit is.
  21. Was Williams added to SF's 40-man in 2002 or 2003? If it was 2003 he still has an option to burn, but if it was in 2002 he'd be out of options, as well. I don't know if Williams has an option left, but it's possible that, even if he does, he has enough service time that you'd have to pass him through revocable waivers before optioning him to the minors. Please refer to Corey Patterson, summer 2005. I don't know if Williams is over whatever threshold that is, but it's something to keep in mind.
  22. "Kearns" is code for "any of the unfortunately right handed hitting right fielders we might get who would benefit from a guy like Mabry facing the really, really tough right handed pitchers". This group includes Austin Kearns, Kevin Mench, and Craig Monroe.
  23. I have a hard time seeing him making more than 4 million in arbitration. I'll put my house against $10,000 of yours. I'll take the over.
