    I just heard Brewers GM Doug Melvin on 1250 in Milwaukee. Melvin was asked about the 4 year $48 Million he offered Carlos Lee in July, and if he still has that money available. Melvin answered that he has an offer of that much on the table to a current free agent. I would guess it is an attempt at Schmidt that will come up short, but interesting that Melvin is at least claiming he has some cash to play with in Milwaukee.

    I would assume that he is mostly speculating about the teams involved, and since the Cubs got their big money hitter this offseason, he doesn't figure the Cubs are involved. I'm not saying they are involved, but I doubt Buster Olney knows either way. I remember hearing Tim Kurkijan on ESPN 1000 about a week before we signed Soriano listing about 5 or 6 teams in the hunt for Soriano ahead of the Cubs. Maybe Bruce could confirm if they have or don't have interest in Manny. I would be willing to give up a lot for Manny. Imagine: Soriano DeRosa Lee Manny Aramis Barrett Pie Izturis They could add 2 lower level pitchers and be the best team in the NL Zambrano, Hill, Prior/Miller, Meche, Ohka/Maddux/or similiar...with Prior or Miller, Marshall, Mateo, Cotts as other starting pitching options.

    He'd drive in more runs than he would give up due to poor defense. That makes his defense a moot point, imo. I dont see how his defense wouldn't hurt the Cubs. They already have very weak SP as it is right now. If they go into next season with a staff that they have now, they cannot afford to give up uneared runs to the opponents day in day out. If you're going to put Manny in a Cubs unifrom, he will be playing LF not RF. I don't see how Murton will have a tuff time making the move to RF. Why is Rf so much harder than LF? Aren't there less balls hit to right than left? Manny still has a cannon, so his arm is fine for right. If they get Manny, they could play him at 2B and I would be ok with it (maybe).

    Agreed. JD is one of those guys who isn't appreciated by most fans. The first time he hits the DL, they will rip him in Boston.

    Huh? Sheets, Capuano, Bush, Villenuva, Vargas is still pretty good. It leaves the Brewers with just two guys who started 30 or more times last year. I guess only reliable starter was an exaggeration, but it does weaken their pitching staff. The next highest was Sheets with 17 starts. Capuano threw over 220 innings this last year, and was over 200 in '05 as well. Bush was also over 200 with more than 30 starts. Davis was third on their team in innings last year. Villenueva also threw over 180 innings between the Brewers and minors.

I guess only reliable starter was an exaggeration, but it does weaken their pitching staff. The next highest was Sheets with 17 starts. Yeah, but Davis was probably going to be the odd man out after this season anyway. They just have too many young starting pitchers not far away from the majors. Davis is a FA after this year. Thats what I mean. He's not in the plans beyond this season. They have too many replacments coming up.

    The Brewers aren't the Marlins, or the Seibu Lions. They plan on a $60 Million payroll this season and over $70 Million by 2008. Money is still a problem for them but they aren't giving away their best hitter who is only due 4-5 million next season for our trash. They drew 2.5 Million in attendence last season.

    That could be helpful with Manning Jr out. Yeah, and special teams coverage. The injury report is now clear after Jones and Wesley were removed on Friday. Faulk is now questionable with the flu. And Josh Miller is now out. That's about average for the Patriots. It is hard to know what's real.

If you don't like the argument you don't have to participate in it. What is boring to you may be interesting to others. Just because you aren't entertained doesn't mean the subject has to change. It really doesn't have to do with it being boring, and really, I wouldn't have said anything if it hadn't gotten so over-the-top and juvenile of late. Whatever dude.     I'm glad someone agrees. I don't understand the infatuation with Lugo in a position that he's played a total of 1 time in his Major League career, especially when it's more vital that we upgrade at SS than it is in OF. Doesn't everyone agree with that? Well everyone except for Hendry?

    I'm fairly certain they would give Clark away for his salary and a cup of coffee. As I noted multiple times in the Billy Hall thread, I don't think he is going anywhere.

    My guess is Lugo in CF until Pie, then Lugo goes to SS. I would rather pay Drew or try to trade for one of the 3 from Tampa: Crawford, Baldelli, or Dukes.

    the Brewers should stop looking the gift horse in the mouth and just give Brady Clark 700 PAs out of centerfield. I hadn't hear the Brewers were pursuing any FAs. so much for my wild Bill Hall theories. Roberts was the only guy they were serious about. They are set on getting a CF because they don't like Clark or Gwynn Jr, and Gross is a 4th OF at best. They also want a "leadoff hitter" so they can hit Weeks 3rd, Prince 4th and Hall 5th. Expect Jenkins, Mench, or Clark to be moved for some bum leadoff hitting CF. That or they resign Pods (once the Sox cut him), play him in CF and hit him leadoff.
