  1. The Cubs have a daily press conference after 5 PM? I think that is pretty standard for the winter meetings week.
  2. Didn't that happen last season and it was nothing? Still interesting to wonder.
  3. Say we miss out on Lilly and or Meche. Hendry will probably try to trade for a starting pitcher. Who is/may be available and who do you want? Some Options: Jason Jennings - Rockies - last year of contract, questionable results Jake Westbrook/Cliff Lee - Indians - probably not be available Tim Hudon - Braves - High salary, bad 2006 Freddy Garcia/Javier Vasquez - White Sox - 2 trades with Sox in 2 months? Jake Peavy - Padres - Injury concerns? Rumored to be available Brad Penny - Dodgers - May not be available Dontrelle Willis - Marlins - cost to acquire would be extreme Mike Maroth - Tigers - He's not very good Bartolo Colon - Angels - huge salary, huge guy, injured Who else is therethat might be available? The trade market looks as weak as the free agent market.
  4. Hendry said that? I thought he wouldn't be able to comment on Jennings, since he is under contract with another team. Is that tampering?
  5. That's because not even Hendry would be stupid enough to pay $20 a year for Schmidt. $15 a year.
  6. This is from the scout.com Bluejays site which has updates pretty often (you have to be a member to read though). Nothing huge but any news is news. They mentioned Meche could decide by tonight. No clue who the people are or if reliable but I think they are in Orl. This is worse than Lilly. Take the money, Gil. The Canadian money.
  7. I'd bet this gets done in the next 24 hours. Hopefully it doesn't cost us Schmidt.
  8. Should we be worried about the...Brewers? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/12/05/meetings.notes/index.html
  9. Ryno to be on ESPN News at 6PM CT tonight.
  10. Another "quality" reporter: Steve Phillips on SportsCenter just said the Cubs are trying to land Lilly and Meche this week.
  11. I'd hate to get excited by something Whitlock is reporting, but combined with the Levine report that we have stepped up our efforts to get Schmidt, this is encouraging.
  12. Because all the Illini fans would get angry we stole a player who made a verbal commitment elsewhere! j/k - I'm an alum. Don't hate... =D> =D> =D>
  13. Don't get your hopes too high on that. I said the same thing last year multiple times. And that team was less talented. The thing is, if Delhomme gets hot, Smith is hard to stop and that can lead to a prolonged playoff run. On the other hand, if Delhomme is off his game, an early playoff exit wouldn't surprise anyone. Carolina will probably be the most feared team in the NFC just because of their potential. I think the potential of the Bears, Cowboys, Saints, and Seahawks is far more scary than the Panthers. Carolina is just ok.
  14. I'll take Peyton over Smith. Smith is top 4 or 5 though.
  15. as a Bears fan, I want no part of Steve Smith against the Bears cover 2. Eh, he doesn't seem the same this year. Delhomme is terrible.
  16. this might mean the inside rumors are that the Cubs are closest so their division rivals are chiming in to drive up the price. just a thought. I like the way you think. Hopefully that is the case because if the Astros or Cards get Schmidt and we get Lilly, it will be rough.
  17. As a Bears fan, I want a rematch with Carolina in our first playoff game. This may cause a nd reverse jinx, but the Panthers have been very unimpressive every time I have seen them this season.
  18. Assuming the Reds want Linebrink, would they take Howry from the Cubs instead. Would the Reds bite on Howry + Jones + Mateo for Dunn? I think they would, but I'm not sure Hendry would do that trade.
  19. That would be huge. No way that happens before the combine/draft if at all.
  20. Maddux to Padres close... http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6238114?FSO1&ATT=HMA
  21. Sign me up for Dunn. He would complete our offense. CF Soriano 2B DeRosa 1B Lee LF Dunn 3B Aramis LF Murton C Barrett SS Izturis It looks like there is no avoiding the Lilly signing. Then the Cubs are 1 starting pitcher and a few bench players away from being ready for spring training.
  22. Jerry Crasnick adds another Lilly to Cubs mention...
  23. So Basically the Bears have to completly crap the bed to not be the #1 seed. 2-2 against the Rams, Bucs, Lions, and Packers should get it done. I'm hoping (with the realistic teams) the playoffs look like this... 1. Bears 2. Saints 3. Cowboys 4. Seattle 5. Giants 6. Carolina
