  1. BRB, committing the murder act on the pitcher.
  2. If Soler is anything but a bust, he'll probably make more than 30 million due to his opt out clauses. We shouldn't get in the habit of thinking we have him locked up cheap for most of his prime, because we really don't.
  3. That's irresponsible. It's irresponsible to post things like that because you'll get my hopes up.
  4. I love having a guy like DeJesus on the team.
  5. Lots of tough, tough choices. I voted W/L, but it was close. Several years ago I probably would have voted RBI, but I think that's pretty widely recognized as a completely worthless stat now.
  6. I'll disagree on that one, but I'm a big fan of Brett. I honestly think he's a 3 to 4 WAR guy for us. I'm still not going to be even remotely sold on Vitters until he keeps this up for a full season, instead of a month long Soriano-like streak. Yeah, that seems pretty far out there to me. Despite his recent slump and Vitters' hot streak, Jackson still has better numbers at a more premium position.
  7. I would recommend batting him third, but I wouldn't want to damage his patience.
  8. Really? The best you have is repeating a point that's been made multiple times before you made it and then dropping the mic with a "keep up?" Real smarmy...reeeeaal smarmy. MY point was that he did an excellent job, a really excellent job, playing spark plug last year. I'm ancient so I think the third spot should go to a more well rounded and more mature hitter, which is not Castro. I also think it might throw his game off or more likely just isn't his game. Completely understand if it sounds like noise because, well it probably is, but I like him better in the two hole now and for a long time after. First of all, that's not what smarmy means. As to your real point: That's fine, I understand that. I don't care. There's a difference between saying he profiles better as a number two hitter and claiming that hitting third is actually harming his performance or his development.
  9. The conversation is about whether his place in the lineup is influencing his attitude and causing him to be more aggressive. My point is that if hitting third is making him believe he needs to make things happen and thus resulting in the above, that the same could easily be true for hitting in the top two spots. Try and keep up.
  10. I don't think it matters one iota. You can make a similar argument for literally every spot in the order. If you hit him 7th or 8th or something he'll want to hit well to prove he belongs at the top of the order. If you hit him first or second he thinks he has to be a sparkplug and get things started. I don't think it's worth a moment of agony.
  11. I think that's pretty dubious. If I had to identify one trait that number three hitters are expected to show, it isn't less patience but more power. He's hardly been swinging for the fences every time up there.
  12. It is very strange to see davearm try to crawl underneath the dog pile in this thread. It's not even subtle.
  13. Why are you so obsessed with DeJesus? His playing time has absolutely nothing to do with Barney's.
  14. Neely has been around way too long, and he has basically always been like this. If he's trolling, then he has some epic dedication to his craft.
  15. Why do you think it matters that DeJesus is leading off over Barney and Campana?
  16. I've wondered what he was up to. I loved Todd, too, but I can hardly think of him without also remembering Augie Doggie.
  17. Well, it's a little goofy because those weaknesses are basically going to get exposed at some point anyway. I don't know why you think keeping him down in the minors can protect him at all. Eventually he will have to try and hit big league pitching. That's kind of beside the point, though. I agree that keeping him down a while longer to try and secure another year of control is a good idea, I just didn't realize that's what you were advocating. I do think he should definitely be up this year once we reach that threshold, though.
  18. Yeah, I don't get that reasoning either. Rizzo has to try and get acclimated to the big leagues at some point. This season is a good choice for that since we're, hopefully, farther from contention that in upcoming seasons.
  19. No, it doesn't. What the data tells you is that he hasn't hit very well in the number three slot. It does not necessarily tell you whether he is somehow less capable of hitting the three slot. I think you need to be very careful about applying undergrad-style statistical principals to the baseball analysis. We aren't taking a random sample to determine what percentage of a population has blue eyes, we're using non-random samples to try and determine how many wins a given player has contributed to his team, an extremely abstract concept. What's worse, we then try and do things like determine a players "true" talent level and make predictions about his future performance based up a wide range of very complex factors. If you think 30 plate appearances is enough for this type of analysis, you'll be proven dead wrong again and again. We have a lot of baseball history that suggests it's not nearly enough.
  20. With Soriano talking about needing surgery, I think we would be pretty fortunate to save 10% of his contract even with no prospects coming back. Nobody is going to want the guy for any role.
  21. Probably not, especially since "this board" is comprised of individuals who have different opinions. In this thread, for example, quite a few people stick up for Dale.
  22. A scenario which is far from guaranteed, especially short term. Well, in either situation the more valuable configuration is probably to have Jackson displacing Campana in center while LaHair plays left.
  23. I thought it was pretty clear from context, but if it was ambiguous, I apologize. I meant he'd be more valuable in left field than Soriano or anyone other organizational LF option. Given the defensive difference, BJax might be able to provide more value in LF. I don't think that's likely in the near future. Considering how cognizant of Jackson's bust potential you have been in the past, I have trouble believing that you really do either.
  24. Really? When I squint my eyes I see two bears high-fiving. Who do you guys consider above average in that group? Castro and Cardenas certainly do not enjoy that reputation.
