  1. I think Matt Murton might actually be a fine option for a cheap starter. If you could move Soriano for any savings at all, you could replace his production with Murton for a bargain price.
  2. Ok, OMC, still think he isn't trying to get a rise out of people? How is a post like this constructive at all to the discussion? People use stuff like that all the time. I remember when Soto sat on the bench and Hill was playing, a few people posted their batting stats over the previous 20 some days to try and justify it. Kyle's post is silly, but hardly outrageous. Quit acting so sensitive about it.
  3. Stop trying to be diplomatic. A moderator pretty much accused you of trolling because you were making salient baseball points, which apparently you aren't allowed to do if they run contrary to our FO. It's bullisht. Really? How about the two times he made things up and was called on it? That's not evidence that he's just saying whatever he can come up with to back his argument? Yeah, but he actually conceded a couple of points. That's so uncommon on the internet that it has to be worth something. When did this thread become about Kyle, anyway? Who's trolling who?
  4. I'm pretty much with Kyle on this one. I don't really see what Stewart gives us over Blake Dewitt except maybe a faint glimmer of upside. Hopefully I'll be eating my words a year from now, but I don't see much point to this move.
  5. I have a couple of reactions to that: the first is that I'm not certain that straight cost of living calculations are really valid for a professional athlete. They travel so much that their expenses are going to look a lot different than a typical person's. The second is that Albert may not necessarily be cognizant of cost of living adjustments, especially since his agent is going to be trying to sell him on the higher value deal either way. It's an interesting fact, but I don't think you should read anything into it.
  6. And plays sub-average defense. as evidenced by his plus ratings via UZR, TZ, DRS...really every advanced fielding metric (you're coming off as an ignorant, pompous ass right now) UZR has him at -3.4 fielding runs for his career, Baseball-Reference has him at -0.3 dWAR for his career. I guess Baseball Prospectus does have him as 0.1 FRAA for his career. Yeah, but at what positions? What do his third base numbers look like?
  7. Who's Greg Maddux?
  8. I'm glad all of that stuff about Ryno being Theo's pick for manager ended up being false.
  9. Completely fair. The primary use of WAR is to be able to compare the general value of players across different roles and positions. Regarding WAR with a pitcher, you have to wonder how useful offensive WAR is. Last year Dontrelle Willis had a combined WAR that was equivalent of Zambrano, and I sure the hell wouldn't want him in the rotation. Personally I would much rather prefer a pitcher that was good at pitching. Why is that your question about WAR with a pitcher? Offensive stats are almost certainly more trustworthy than pitching stats.
  10. OTOH, they do fund it. At the end, the Trib definitely threw more money to make the MLB team better, but possibly at the tail end they did not spend much internally. There wouldn't be much need to since they were selling the team and new ownership might want to build their own FO. I don't know though this is purely speculation... I don't believe the Tribune would have bothered decided how the money is spent is my point, though. That's why they have management. While it's possible that they forced Hendry and company to skimp on internal spending I don't think that's very likely. I'm not sure why you seem to be trying to absolve the previous management teams of its problems.
  11. It's up to management to run the day to day operations of the team, though. Yes, perhaps ownership should have pushed harder on these issues or changed management much sooner, but with this type of organization it isn't their responsibility to design and maintain all of the processes and procedures.
  12. I don't really care all that much. I would be fine with Terry Francona just because he's the devil you know.
  13. Great point. If letting Aramis go means we're playing Pujols instead of Pena, it's going to be worth it.
  14. Trade Wilkin for Wright. We probably only have Wilkin for another year anyway, and with McLeod on board we'll be dealing from a position of relative strength.
  15. What the hell? That was my boo.
  16. I'm using subsilver2 like UMFan, and I cannot identify a link to the front page.
  17. Can we add a link to the front page somewhere on the boards? Either on the logo or board title or something.
  18. If the Cubs trade Byrd and Soriano, what do you think the outfield looks like for 2012? Even if we assume Jackson is playing CF come Hell or high water, that still leaves us having to fill two outfield spots.
  19. I'm worried about his decline this year and the years he might receive on his next contract, but getting Pujols would be tremendous.
  20. I believe other articles have as well. The level of hate he draws is seriously bizarre to me, and I have never heard a good reason for it.
  21. Only because you don't hate Crane Kenney enough.
  22. Thanks, Laura. I appreciate it.
  23. Is there a link to an archived version yet? I would like to listen.
  24. If the Red Sox get anything more than a mediocre A-ball pitcher, they should be happy. Minor leaguers are valued way more now than they were valued in 1994. So you're saying the compensation for Epstein should be lower. I see. . . You make a persuasive argument, EpsteinCubs.
  25. Yeah, I don't buy the whole "worn out" argument ever since I fell for that stuff back when Corey Patterson was on the Cubs. It sounds plausible, but I don't give it any credibility.
