  1. That's true, however, skating Kane 20+ minutes per night makes him less effective and more likely to get injured. Smith/ Morin/ whomever would not replace Hossa but they could be relied on to take at least most of their shifts, thus easing the bruden on everyone else. I'd much rather keep Mayers. So would the Hawks, I believe. Carcillo, iirc, is signed for next season too. Not sure how it affects the cap if they cut him. However, if Bowman could get a draft pick for John F Scott, surely he can find a taker for Carcillo. The glacial speed of Eastern Conference games would make Carcillo look like the flash despite his injuries. I'd take a 7th round pick for Carcillo
  2. It's anecdotal, but the NFL is a league where you know what you have with a player during their first season. QBs take time to develop, other positions learn from experience but the reason why fans gets excited about the NFL draft is that those players can and should make an immediate impact. Outside of Jeffrey, who from last year's draft class really stood out as having a lot of long term upside?
  3. I keep hearing this, but this is only the second game his missed this season. At least, in its entirety. But he's one hit away from being out indefinitely. While you could say that about a lot of players, it's particularly worrisome with Hossa since the roster- as currently constructed- doesn't have the depth for him to miss significant time. The Hawks are going to have to make the tough decision to cut lose Mayers or Carcillo. At this point, Bollig has shown enough that they really don't need Mayers as the sandpaper guy. What they really need is a wing that can be an energy guy on the 4th line that has enough speed and upside to not look completely lost on the top 2 lines. In other words- and I know I'm beating that dead horse- they need either Smith or Morin up and Carcillo or Mayers out. I'd much rather try to trade Carcillo but it's easier financially to just release Mayers.
  4. Clevenger would be in more of a 1b/3b/C Tyler Houston mold. Minus the ability to hit
  5. 10 pm eastern, if it makes you feel any better
  6. Along those lines, hockey players break in a lot earlier than other sports. In MLB, a player might be almost 30 by the time he reaches FA. It's a lot easier giving a guy a 10 year contract when he's 24.
  7. I know that hockey isn't the only sport that is irresponsible with salaries, but they're the most economically challenged of the 4 major sports, and they continue to give out these kinds of deals. From an admittedly new-ish hockey fan, it just seems pretty ridiculous. These things are relative though. The best players in the NHL don't even make half of what the best players in MLB, NFL or NBA make. In this case, Perry is making about 1/7 of the team payroll. That would be like the Cubs paying an MVP caliber player $21 million per season.
  8. Does starting Baez at AA remind anyone else of the Corey Patterson experience of being promoted too quickly through levels where he hadn't had sustained success? Baez is better than Patterson but having him skip a level based on a few AFL and ST plate appearances seems like a bad idea. If they do start him at AA, it seems like it's an attempt to skirt their own policy of "One season at every level". Not a big fan if that is even a consideration.
  9. In chess when you know you're going to lose you can resign and save time. They should have that rule in hockey. Or maybe a running clock once one team has a 6 goal lead.
  10. Is this a caddyshack reference?
  11. Hayes made a couple plays defensively and he was right where you'd want him on Oduya's goal. But otherwise, yeah, he looked like he wasn't Jeremy Morin.
  12. I think you're missing Kruger. Scratch Bollig and slot Kruger in at 4C. I agree they'll probably (unfortunately) throw Carcillo up on the second line as well, I just hope they keep the third line intact. I would have preferred Morin over Hayes, but as long as Bollig keeps sitting in the press box, I'm alright. You're right about Kruger. That is our best lineup with available personnel. It would be great to not see Bollig but I bet we see him and Brookbank tonight. You're right about Morin over Hayes too. Hayes has been playing a lot of C at the Rock so maybe he's gotten decent at the dot and can take some of Bolland's faceoffs.
  13. Sounds like Hayes was skating with the 2nd line yesterday in practice so he'll at least start there. Knowing Q, he'll probably try to mix in Carcillo on that line at some point. I'm guessing the lineup looks like this tonight: Saad-Toews-Hossa Hayes-Bolland-Kane Bickell-Shaw-Stalberg Carcillo-Frolik-Bollig (this line in anticipation of some goonery on the part of the BJs) I could see Hayes taking a couple shifts centering that 4th line.
  14. Jimmy Hayes recalled from Rock Vegas. I guess we'll see if he can provide that net presence that his size indicates he should.
  15. I had heard they were going to do that to get him some injury rehab time. Can't wait to see who they bring up. Probably Beach because he's the last thing the Hawks need. Morin or Pirri, plz. Kthx. It depends on where you want him to play. Morin is a more natural replacement for Sharp on the 2nd line. If you're looking for someone to fill out the 4th line than Smith or Hayes would be good options. If they're looking for a depth player at C I wouldn't hate seeing St. Pierre since he has more experience and isn't much of a factor moving forward so if he's a healthy scratch a lot of the time that wouldn't really matter.
  16. Can he really be worse than Jake Fox at 3rd? Would you say that Fox got "meaningful innings" at 3rd?
  17. I had heard they were going to do that to get him some injury rehab time. Can't wait to see who they bring up. Probably Beach because he's the last thing the Hawks need.
  18. The silver lining in all this is that now they can tweak the lineup/ roster without having to worry about messing with success. These 2 games have shown some warts but nothing that can't be fixed. Call up Smith, Pirri or Morin and never play Mayers and Bollig at the same time again. This move also solves the where to play Carcillo question which is 4th line or press box. As an added bonus, Smith or Morin would not be completely out of place on the top 2 lines, allowing the 3rd line to be reassembled and work the way it's supposed to.
  19. Especially when the news came out today that John Scott's little punching bag from Columbus is going to miss the rest of the season with a broken collar bone.
  20. Didn't see this in this thread http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/fandom/post/_/id/19291/jump-on-board-the-blackhawks-bandwagon
  21. I don't like the way that counting the games from last season ignores what happened in the playoffs. Otherwise, I really don't care about the streak at all. 24 straight to start the season will be hard to break but no one will care until someone else gets close. When that happens, I'm sure they'll ask Kane and he'll say how their record was better because it was a shortened season, more back to back games and so forth.

  23. As somebody who utilizes almost nothing but Simpsons and Seinfeld quotes when talking with family, I can relate. 85 JERRY! 85!
  24. I think we may have seen the last of Brookbank for a while. If Montador can play, Brookbank will get the Lepisto treatment until they can trade one of them. I believe they'll call up Smith once they decided the extent of Sharp's injury. Hopefully Shaw doesn't have a concussion. If he does, I wonder if they'd bring up St. Pierre instead of Pirri. It would be a nice rreward for St. Pierre and probably better for Pirri. Anyone heard what's wrong with Frolik? The random line generator will be in full force. Here's what I think Q will start with Friday: Toews- Hossa- Carcillo Bolland-Kane- Saad Kruger- Bickell-Stalberg St. Pierre/ Pirri/Mayers- Smith- Frolik I like that second line.
  25. Probability is not is his favor regarding this game. If he predicted that the Hawks would lose at some point, yes. The law of probability isn't going to help the Avs win tonight.
